Verbal & Non-Verbal Communication

Verbal and nonverbal communication are two primary means through which humans convey
information, thoughts, and emotions to one another:

(1) Verbal Communication: Verbal communication involves the use of spoken or

written words to convey messages and information. It includes language, grammar,
vocabulary, and syntax. Verbal communication can occur through various forms, such as
face-to-face conversations, phone calls, video chats, written documents, speeches, and
more. It is a structured and explicit way of conveying ideas and can be highly effective
for transmitting detailed and complex information.

Types of Verbal Communication

1. Public Communication
2. Small Group Communication
3. Intrapersonal Communication
4. Interpersonal Communication

(2) Nonverbal Communication: Nonverbal communication encompasses all forms of

communication that do not involve words. It includes facial expressions, body language,
gestures, eye contact, tone of voice, posture, and even the use of personal space.
Nonverbal cues often convey emotions, attitudes, and other subtle messages. They can
complement, reinforce, or contradict verbal messages. Nonverbal communication is
especially important in understanding the emotional context of a message and can be a
powerful tool for conveying feelings and intentions.

Types Of Non-Verbal Communication

1. Facial Expressions
2. Gestures
3. Proximity
4. Touch
5. Eye Contact
6. Appearance

Note: Both verbal and nonverbal communication are integral to human interaction, and they
often work together to convey a complete message. The effectiveness of communication relies

on the appropriate use of both verbal and nonverbal elements to ensure that the intended message
is understood and interpreted correctly.

Some Pictures as Examples of Non-Verbal Communication

This Picture shown above is an example of Facial Expression in which a boy is shown
smiling. Through his Facial Expression of smile we can understand that he’s feeling happy. He
has not told us through any words that he’s feeling happy, but his facial expressions clearly tell
us that he’s smiling cause he’s feeling happy.

This Picture Shown Above is an example of Gestures in which a boy is showing his hand in
such a way that he wants to stop someone or some vehicle etc. Now he has not told us through
any of the words that he wants to stop someone, but his hand gestures are showing this clearly
that he wants to stop someone of some vehicle.

The Two Pictures shown above are the examples of Appearance. Your clothing, grooming,
and overall appearance can convey information about your personality, occupation, and social
status. It can also influence how others perceive you. The Boy in the first picture is depicting that
he’s going to a party and in casual wear but the boy in the second picture is depicting/showing
that he’s going for a formal meeting or an interview.
