ACRYLIC PAINTING

my favorite paints and mediums

THICK PAINTINGS

I love painting with thick acrylic

paints and making textural, color
rich art! In answer to your first
question, it takes 3-7 days to dry.
(And yes, the cat has walked in wet
paint.) I have a baker's rack to
protect the paintings when they're
drying, but a high bookshelf will
work just as well.

MY PAINTS

I use Golden, Liquitex and Utrecht

Artist Heavy Bodied Acrylics. The
paints have to be very thick, like
cream cheese! My favorite colors are
quinacridone magenta, phthalo
blue and hansa yellow.
 MY MEDIUMS

I use two types of mediums, Liquitex

Extra Heavy Gloss Gel, and Utrecht
Modeling Medium. The gel
mediums dry clear and glossy. I use
these paints for the classic chunkies.
I also use Modeling Medium, which
dries to a matte finish and will
lighten the paint. (I sometimes use
the modeling medium like white
paint.) My paint ratio can be up to
1 part paint to 20 parts medium.

MY TOOLS

I use a small, diamond shaped

palette knife for the Dragon Petal
paintings, and a hardware store
putty or drywall knife for the classic
chunkies. Sometimes I even use
frosting bags and tips!

MY CANVAS

I prefer to paint on primed wooden

panels rather than canvases.
Canvases will work too, but they can
be bouncy, and I prefer the hard
surface of a wood panel. I always
prime the panel or canvas with
white gesso or basic house primer.
