CHAPTER I

PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter discusses the background of the study, statement

of the problem, conceptual framework, scope and limitations,

significance of the study, and definition of terms.

A. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The most well-known, aesthetically oriented, unconventionally

styled, and trend-setting music genre of the twenty-first century

is K-pop, or Korean Pop. Kpop, which has its roots in South Korea,

is influenced by a variety of musical genres, including pop,

experimental, rock, hip-hop, R&B, electronic, and dance. There is a

K-pop band or singer to suit any preference because the range of

inspirations is so great. There are sizable girl groups, like Girls

Generation, that create simple pop songs. However, you should check

out BLACKPINK if you enjoy pop music with rap breaks that are

influenced by Nicki Minaj’s brisk lyrical approach. If your tastes

are more alternative, check out the emo-styled band F.T. ISLAND is

here. And g.o.d.(Groove Over Dose) has the jams if you want some

mellow, sensual R&B. However, while crossing multiple genres, K-pop

is distinctly Korean.

According to Emma Rundle, (2020) most students assume that the

music they like only influences their style. They wear clothes

inspired by popular South Korean fashion. They get inspired for

hair and makeup, too. This should be just another trend that comes

and goes. The influence of music doesn’t stop with fashion choices.

Also, it’s not something that affects us for a limited period of

time. When it influences an important period of our lives, its

effects are extended.

This is a multi-billion-dollar industry. Students don’t just

buy the albums. They also spend on t-shirts and other merchandise

that’s not necessary for them. Concert tickets cost a lot of money,

and lead to associated expenses such as travel, food, and

accommodation.

In recent years, K-pop, which is Korean pop music and culture,

has become incredibly popular worldwide, including in the

Philippines. They are influence by Korean in terms of looks. Many

students there are big fans of K-pop idols. People are curious

about how being a fan of K-pop might affect students’ school

grades. According to Frank David S. Labrador, (2018) “Filipino had

been influenced by Korean Pop music not just by its music but also

their own culture, the way they act, the way they speak and etc..”

It means Filipino adopted not just the music they adopt the culture

of korean idols

This study aims to determine the Effects of Stanning K-POP

Idols on academic performance of Grade 12 HUMSS student in

Philippine College of Advance Arts and Technology, because a lot of

students loves K-POP and it influenced a lot of students by their

music and also to their culture. It also give students a lot of

effects like give inspiration, strength and happiness in students.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter has the content of Research Related Literature, which

includes finished studies, articles from newspapers, and others of the

current study that the researchers are conducting.

A. Foreign Studies

B. Local Studies

According to John Paul Vergonia (2018) K-pop’s influence is not

limited to entertainment and fashion; it can inspire one’s life. The

study found that listening to K-pop can be a inspiration to someones

life, because K-pop musics has a message inside it. K-pop music can

encourage you on what to do and what not to do in Life, Love life,

Friendships, etc.

Apart from its upbeat tune that makes us bob our heads and shake our

hips, K-Pop’s choreography often leaves us in awe as singers’ dance while

singing, hence, many K-Pop concerts held in the Philippines are standing-

room only. frank david S. Labrador(2018).

However, the students may not be able to determine how badly or

greatly they are influenced by the Hallyu as they are focused on

gathering information that will feed their curiosity and excitement
