Identity and culture

The term ‘culture’ refers to the language, beliefs, values and

norms, customs, dress, diet, roles, knowledge and skills,
and all the other things that people learn that make up the
‘way of life’ of any society. Culture is passed on from one
generation to the next through the process of socialization.
Although there are many aspects of everyday life which
are shared by most members of society, there are different
conceptions and definitions of culture within this general
approach.
Browne, K. (2008). Sociology for AS AQA. London: Polity Press.
Identity and culture

Identity is about how individuals or groups see and define

themselves, and how other individuals or groups see and
define them. Identity is formed through the socialization
process and the influence of social institutions like the
family, the education system and the mass media.

• OUTLOOKS
HOW DO I VIEW THE WORLD?
Joaquín Torres García, “América invertida” Uruguay, 1943
We see a Global Citizen as someone who:
is aware of the wider world and has a sense of their own role as a world
citizen;
• respects and values diversity;
• has an understanding of how the world works economically,
politically, socially, culturally, technologically and environmentally;
• is outraged by social injustice;
• participates in and contributes to the community at a range of levels
from local to global;
• is willing to act to make the world a more sustainable place;
• takes responsibility for their actions.
