AIRWORTHINESS LIMITATIONS SECTION

For all these aircraft (excluding A319 NEO Corporate Jet and A320 NEO Corporate Jet) a
Design Service Goal (DSG) of 96 000 FH or 48 000 FC, whichever occurs first, has been
set.

4. DEFINITION OF ALS PART 5 CONTENTS

4.1 LIFE LIMITATIONS

Components/items listed under this section are those affected by a replacement requirement
associated to a life limitation less than the applicable aircraft life limitation. Failure of these
components/items in combination with other failures could lead to a catastrophic failure.
Life limitations quoted in SECTION 3 are applicable to the undamaged detail components/items as
listed, not to the assembly or the aircraft on which they are installed.

4.2 REPETITIVE MAINTENANCE/INSPECTION TASKS

This section identifies repetitive maintenance/inspection tasks at aircraft level. The maintenance
requirements are applicable no later than the aircraft reaching the airworthiness limitation. These
tasks must be included in an Operator’s approved maintenance program. The task interval is
quoted in usage parameters (e.g. Flight Hour, Flight Cycle or Calendar time) depending on the
cause of potential degradation that, if not detected and addressed, could lead to catastrophic
failure of the aircraft.
Unless otherwise stated, the tasks and intervals specified in SECTION 4 of the ALS Part 5 are
mandatory and cannot be changed, escalated or deleted without the concurrence of the Primary
Certification Authority (EASA).
Where explicitly stated, task intervals may be adjusted in accordance with an Operator's approved
escalation practices or an approved reliability program, but the task content may not be changed or
deleted without prior Primary Certification Authority (EASA) approval. This statement has been
agreed on the basis that Operators with approved escalation practices or an approved reliability
program make adjustments to their maintenance programs based on data collection and analytical
techniques. It has been demonstrated that the use of such methods to manage a maintenance
program does not give rise to undue escalation.
With respect to tasks requiring tank entry, the interval quoted in this document is intended to allow
Operators to perform the task during an extended hangar visit during which tank entry is already
likely to be required for accomplishment of structural and Zonal inspections.

4.3 CRITICAL DESIGN CONFIGURATION CONTROL LIMITATIONS (CDCCL)

A CDCCL is a limitation required to preserve either a critical ignition source prevention design
feature of the fuel system that is necessary to prevent the occurrence of an unsafe condition or a
critical design feature of the flammability reduction system.
The purpose of the CDCCL is to provide instructions to retain the critical ignition source prevention
or critical flammability reduction system design feature during configuration change that may be
caused by alterations, repairs, or maintenance actions.

5. BASIC RULES

5.1 CLOCK STARTING POINT FOR ALS PART 5 LIMITATIONS AND MAINTENANCE
REQUIREMENTS

This paragraph provides general rules related to the starting point for calculation of due dates or
times for limitations and maintenance requirements identified in this document according to the
different usage parameters.

5.1.1 LIFE LIMITATIONS

For the transferable systems components/items, the starting point is defined as the date at which
the component accomplishes the first flight for which it will undertake its intended function.
When computing the accumulated life of a component/item, calculations shall include the time
since its first flight according to usage parameters (unless otherwise stated).
The life limitation indicated against PNR originally fitted is counted from the first flight of the
component/item.
The life limitation indicated against PNR evolutions is also to be counted from the first flight of the
component/item (unless otherwise stated).

5.1.2 REPETITIVE MAINTENANCE/INSPECTION TASKS

For maintenance inspection/task whose interval is given in Calendar time or in Flight Hours (FH),
the starting point to be considered is the date of Transfer of Title (TOT) to the first Operator of the
aircraft, unless otherwise stated in the delivery documentation of the dedicated aircraft.
Considering the very low number of flight hours performed between first flight and delivery, and the
methodology used to define task intervals, EASA agrees to consider the date of delivery of the
aircraft as the starting point for maintenance requirements whose intervals are given in Flight
Hours.
For maintenance inspection/task whose interval is given in Flight Cycles (FC) or Landings (LDG),
the starting point to be considered is the date of the aircraft first flight, unless otherwise stated in
the delivery documentation of the dedicated aircraft.
For a maintenance inspection/task that becomes applicable for the first time following modification
embodiment, the starting point is to be considered as the Date/FH/FC at which the modification is
embodied.
Next interval is calculated from the original due date of the last accomplishment of the
maintenance requirement, excluding any exceptional short-term extensions from calculation.
When alternative inspection methods are provided, the next interval applicable is the one
associated with the inspection method used at last inspection.

A320 Family
AIRWORTHINESS LIMITATIONS SECTION

5.2 TRACEABILITY

Components/items listed under SECTION 3 have to be considered as “service life limited

components” or “life-limited parts” and therefore it is necessary to assure traceability and
monitoring of these parts as per EASA Part M A.305 - Aircraft continuing airworthiness record
system.
In the context of the ALS Part 5, traceability means records that clearly demonstrate the history of
each component back to initial entry into service of the component/item, so that life limitations are
accurately applied. Traceability records may comprise, but are not limited to, the following:
- Application history (aircraft type, model, weight variant, MSN i.e. Manufacturer
Serial Number, etc.),
- Maintenance actions carried out (Airworthiness Directives, modifications, repairs,
inspections, etc.),
- Life accumulation (accounting for any individual aircraft to which a component
may have been fitted).
Traceability and monitoring of component/item listed is not required for consumable component
(for which replacement is controlled at assembly/aircraft level).

5.3 REPLACEMENT REQUIREMENTS

In order to maintain aircraft airworthiness, Operators shall replace components/items listed under
SECTION 3 at or prior to whichever of the life limitations occurs first.

5.4 INTENTIONALLY LEFT BLANK

5.5 DISPOSAL/QUARANTINE ACTION

When the components/items, listed in SECTION 3, reach the life limitations, disposal/quarantine
action shall be taken as per EASA Part M.A.504 - Control of unserviceable components, which
asks for a status of service life limited components and a service life limited components log card.
Appropriate means shall be implemented to deter their installation on aircraft pending possible
extension of their life limitations. Examples of means are:
- Record keeping system,
- Non-permanent markings,
- Segregation (components stored separately from those currently eligible for
installation).
The ultimate solution is the mutilation beyond repair limits to prevent rework to appear to be
airworthy as per AMC M.A.504 – Control of unserviceable components.
Note: When consumable components are removed, they must be mutilated beyond repair limits to
prevent rework to appear to be airworthy.

A320 Family
AIRWORTHINESS LIMITATIONS SECTION

5.6 EXCEPTIONAL SHORT-TERM EXTENSIONS

Since SECTION 4 maintenance inspection/task intervals are based on statistical averages and
reliability rates, an exceptional short-term extension for a specific Fuel ALI interval may be made
on one aircraft for a limited period of time without jeopardizing safety.
The term “exceptional short-term extension” is defined as an increase in a Fuel ALI interval that
may be needed to cover an uncontrollable or unexpected situation. Repeated use of such
extensions, either on the same aircraft or on similar aircraft in the Operator's fleet, should not be
used as a substitute for good maintenance practices.
Unless noted adjacent to the task, for Fuel ALI identified in this ALS Part 5, it has been accepted
by the Primary Certification Office (EASA) that short-term extensions up to the following maximum
values may be granted without consultation with that office. Requests for extensions in excess of
these values must be submitted with full justification to the Primary Certification Office (EASA)
such that approval, if granted, can be given prior to their use.
(1) Fuel ALIs controlled by Flight Hours (FH)
Extensions up to 10% or 500FH (whichever is the lesser) may exceptionally be granted on
Fuel ALI intervals quoted in terms of flight hours.
(2) Fuel ALIs controlled by Flight Cycles (FC or LDG)
Extensions up to 5% or 250FC (whichever is the lesser) may exceptionally be granted on
Fuel ALI intervals quoted in terms of Flight Cycles or Landings.
(3) Fuel ALIs controlled by Calendar Time
Where the repeat interval is 12 months or less, extensions up to 10% or 1 month
(whichever is the lesser) may exceptionally be granted on Fuel ALI intervals quoted in
terms of months.
Where the repeat interval is greater than 12 months but less than 3 years, extensions up
to 2 months may exceptionally be granted.
Where the repeat interval is 3 years or greater, extensions up to 3 months may
exceptionally be granted.
This paragraph in the ALS Part 5 is written to confirm to the Authority of the State of aircraft
registry that exceptional short-term extensions of Fuel ALI intervals are permissible. Approval of
such extensions rests with the Authority of the State of aircraft registry in the same way as it does
for any other scheduled maintenance task interval extension.
Note: No short-term extensions are permissible for maintenance tasks previously required by
individual ADs. These items will be highlighted by a note in the task description column.

6. REPORTING

Any identified condition affecting components/items listed in the ALS Part 5 which could endanger
flight safety shall be reported in accordance with operational rules of registration of the aircraft.
Airbus highly advises all operators to also report inspection findings to Airbus via the AirbusWorld
eSite: Airbus World > Content library > Maintenance and Engineering > Scheduled Maintenance
Requirements > MPD Reporting Template.
This then gives access to the appropriate reporting spreadsheet and the associated “MPD Task
Reporting Guidelines”.

A320 Family
AIRWORTHINESS LIMITATIONS SECTION

All reports should be sent to MPDtask.Reports@airbus.com. Any related questions should be sent
to the same address. Operators will receive an acknowledgement for data reports.

7. PRODUCTION CONCESSIONS, REPAIRS, ALS VARIATIONS, AIRWORTHINESS

DIRECTIVES AND ALTERNATIVE METHODS OF COMPLIANCE

Limitations of the ALS Part 5 may be superseded by instructions given in either a production
concession, a repair solution, an ALS Variation, an Alternative Method of Compliance (AMOC), an
Airworthiness Directive (AD) or exemptions provided by National Aviation Authorities (e.g.
exemption supported by ASAC – Airbus Statement of Airworthiness Compliance).
It is Operator’s responsibility to refer to the applicable limitations.
When a limitation affected by a production concession/repair solution/AD/AMOC, Operators are
requested to contact Airbus for guidance to establish impact on the production concession/repair
solution/AD/AMOC.

8. MODIFICATIONS/REPAIRS NOT DEVELOPED BY AIRBUS DOA CERTIFICATE

EASA.21J.031

If an aircraft/component has a modification or repair embodied, that has not been developed under
the authority of Airbus Design Organization Approval (DOA) No EASA.21J.031, and affects the
content of the ALS, the Design Approval Holder (e.g. Supplementary Type Certificate (STC)
holder) is responsible to provide any necessary adaptations of the ALS Part 5 airworthiness
limitations.

CDCCL
CDCCL REQUIREMENTS REFERENCE LIMITATION APPLICABILITY
REF.

(1) CDCCL REF.

The CDCCL Ref. identifies the number of CDCCL.
(2) CDCCL
The CDCCL column identifies the critical component/item or design features of the fuel system and the Flammability Reduction System (FRS).
(3) REQUIREMENTS
The requirements column explains why critical component/item or design features of the fuel system or of the FRS are considered critical with regards
to ignition risk. This column provides instructions to retain the critical ignition source prevention or critical flammability reduction design features during
configuration change that may be caused by alterations, repairs, or maintenance actions that Operators are required to comply with.
(4) REFERENCE
This column provides a reference to Instruction for Continued Airworthiness where a CDCCL is contained. E.g.: Reference to Aircraft Maintenance
Manual (AMM), or Component Maintenance Manual (CMM).
The reference column is for guidance only as its content is not approved by EASA. Operators shall comply with the instructions provided in the column
“Requirements”. Should a reference change between two successive revisions of the ALS Part 5, the Operator should consider the updated
reference.
Operators shall ensure that the person performing an installation, a repair or a modification will not compromise the original design criteria and shall
reflect CDCCL in their internal documentation.
(5) APPLICABILITY
The applicability column gives the specific aircraft series/model and possible additional identifier (MOD, etc.) to allow the identification of those aircraft
to which the CDCCL reference applies.

AIRWORTHINESS LIMITATIONS SECTION

Due to their general nature, CDCCL No. 5, No. 8 and No. 9 are considered impracticable to identify in aircraft documentation. The applicability column
gives the combination of critical design features with aircraft that requires the identification of CDCCL items.

Note: “FAA only” term in the limitation applicability means that all aircraft operated under FAA registration or aircraft registered under an Airworthiness
Authority which follow FAA rules, have to comply with this limitation. It is the Operator’s responsibility to check the limitation applicability with the
authority of the state of aircraft registration.
