2. The Issue

The problem discussed in the article is the lack of consistent and in-depth needs analysis in
English language learning in the civil engineering department of Politeknik Negeri Manado,
which causes the tendency of English language teachers or course planners to teach General
English and less towards ESP (English for Specific Purposes) learning that is more in line with the
needs of civil engineering students in their field of work. This article discusses how an ESP
learning needs analysis can help English planners and teachers in developing syllabus/RPS
content and teaching materials that can meet the needs and success of learners in learning
English in the civil engineering department of Politeknik Negeri Manado.

3. Research Purposes

The purpose of the research discussed in the article is to analyze the English learning needs of
civil engineering students at Politeknik Negeri Manado by using a survey method in the form of a
structured closed ended questionnaire to obtain quantitative data on 4 categories of
respondents namely; civil engineering students in semester 3 and 5 of D4 KBG Politeknik Negeri
Manado, engineering English teachers, civil engineering major course teachers of foreign alumni
and several stakeholders of multinational construction management companies. The purpose of
this study is to provide detailed and clear information about the learning materials needed by
civil engineering students and vice versa, students can also get English learning materials that
are relevant to their academic and work fields so that they can have the right language skills and
also have high confidence to be able to communicate in English professionally in their careers
and the world of work well.
4. Research Methods

The research method used in the article is a survey method using a structured questionnaire that
is closed ended. This research was conducted by collecting quantitative data from 4 categories of
respondents, namely students majoring in civil engineering in the 3rd and 5th semester of KBG
Politeknik Negeri Manado, teachers of engineering English, teachers of major civil engineering
courses of foreign alumni, and several stakeholders of multinational construction management
companies. The initial stage of this research was carried out by studying some literature and
journals related to the research topic. Furthermore, a survey was conducted by compiling an
instrument in the form of a questionnaire distributed to the respondents mentioned earlier. The
data obtained from this research was then analyzed to obtain a summary of important English
learning materials, including 4 areas of language skills and language topics relevant to the field
of science and work of students majoring in civil engineering.

5. Research Results

The research results obtained from the article are a summary of important English learning
materials, covering 4 areas of language skills and language topics that are relevant to the fields
of science and work of students majoring in civil engineering. The results of this research are
expected to be used as reference material for syllabus/RPS planning and development of English
teaching materials for civil engineering. In addition, this research also shows that ESP learning
needs analysis can help English planners and teachers in preparing and developing syllabus/RPS
content and teaching materials that can meet the needs and success of learners in learning
English in the civil engineering department of Politeknik Negeri Manado.

6. Strengths and Weaknesses of The Research

Some of the STRENGTHS of the research discussed in the article include:

1. The research method used is a survey method using a structured questionnaire that is closed
ended. This method allows researchers to collect quantitative data that can be analyzed
statistically.

2. This research involved 4 different categories of respondents, namely students majoring in civil
engineering in the 3rd and 5th semester of D4 KBG Politeknik Negeri Manado, teachers of
engineering English, teachers of major civil engineering courses of foreign alumni, and several
stakeholders of multinational construction management companies. This allowed the researcher
to get different perspectives from each category of respondents.
3. The results of this study provide detailed and clear information about the English learning
materials needed by civil engineering students and vice versa, students can also get English
learning materials that are relevant to their academic and work fields so that they can have the
right language skills and also have high confidence to be able to communicate in English
professionally in their careers and the world of work well.

4. The results of this study can be used as reference material for syllabus/RPS planning as well as
the development of English teaching materials for civil engineering. In addition, this research
also shows that ESP learning needs analysis can help English planners and teachers in preparing
and developing syllabus/RPS content and teaching materials that can meet the needs and
success of learners in learning English in the civil engineering department of Politeknik Negeri
Manado

Here are some of the WEAKNESS of the research discussed in the article:

1. This research only uses survey method by using structured questionnaire which is closed
ended. This method may not be able to explore more in-depth information about the English
learning needs of civil engineering students.

2. This research was only conducted at Politeknik Negeri Manado and only involved civil
engineering students in semester 3 and 5 of D4 KBG Politeknik Negeri Manado. Therefore, the
results of this study may not be generalizable to a wider population.

3. This study does not discuss other factors that may affect the success of civil engineering
students' English learning, such as psychological and social factors.
