From Mega events and world championships in
so many sports:

success or failure for sport.

used and trained to carry out a good
performance for winning the games.
Sport academic development
and the utilization of sport
• sport is used in facilitating and developing students. It
could be considered as the therapeutic value in helping to
relieve stress, to strengthen health for and to increase
academic performance for students (Larkins, 2006).
• An encouragement to co-operate between educational
institutions and sport organization with the purpose of
better integration of sports and transference of its values
into education is important to utilize sport properly for
human development (Popovic, 2006).

Sport is encouraging better academic performance
Understanding participating in sport and
physical activity
• A common perception that devoting curriculum time to sport and physical activity will negatively
impact students’ academic performance; taking away time from ‘important’ subjects.
• However, research demonstrates that participation in sport and physical activity, both inside and outside
the classroom, positively impacts students’ academic performance and efficiency.
• Integrating sport and physical activity into the routines of young people has demonstrated effectiveness
in increasing students’ ability to learn and apply new skills and knowledge.
• Participation in sport and physical activity at a young age encourages positive cognitive
development in youth – developing and learning to use the core skills of the brain to think, read, learn,
remember, reason and problem solve.
• Sport and physical activity positively impacts academic performance as it encourages the enhancement
of brain function and cognition through increasing blood flow to the brain; increasing levels of
norepinephrine and endorphins; and increasing growth factors.
12 WAYS SPORT MAKES A POSITIVE

IMPACT
Economic Impact
Sport represents a multi-million-pound business—that’s no secret. But what you might
not realize is the immensely positive impact sport has on local economies, e.g. through
tourism.

• Jobs
Part of the economic impact involves jobs. These jobs include far more than just the
athletes, but also coaches, referees and agents. And that doesn’t even take into
consideration the many stadium retailers and their employees, front-office personnel, etc.
12 WAYS SPORT MAKES A POSITIVE

IMPACT
National Unity
Sport provides a platform for people to come together and support their country. International
events like the Olympics and the World Cup serve as a point around which to rally and show
national pride and unity, for example South Africa’s 1995 Rugby World Cup victory helped a
nation heal from decades of Apartheid.

• City Pride
Along with national pride goes city pride. There is a certain togetherness, a certain camaraderie
that total strangers can achieve simply by virtue of living in the same town or city and cheering on
the same team.
12 WAYS SPORT MAKES A POSITIVE
IMPACT
• Role Models
Ask young children who their role models are, and I bet a good amount of them would name
an athlete. Athletes, in times of difficulty, can be important role models as they overcome
obstacles and achieve against great odds.

• Helping Kids Get Active

Young people who look up to athletes might be more likely to get out and play sports
themselves. There is strong evidence that physical activity and sport has a positive impact on
children’s social skills. Studies show further social benefits for children as a result of physical
activity including increased confidence and peer acceptance, alongside a link to friendship.
12 WAYS SPORT MAKES A POSITIVE
IMPACT
• Employment Outlook
Besides helping children get active and healthy, sports participation can have other
major benefits such as mental well-being and increased self-esteem.
Studies have shown that young people who played sport at school had a better career
outlook and performed better in their jobs later in life.
• Community Relations
Most teams and leagues have community foundations or charitable arms. This means
that professional athletes often spend time performing service in their communities.
12 WAYS SPORT MAKES A POSITIVE
IMPACT
• Make-A-Wish
The Make-A-Wish Foundation isn’t the only charity of its kind, but it is probably
one of the more visible. Make-A-Wish has partnered with many sports teams and
athletes over the years to make dreams come true for young people with life-
threatening illnesses. Millions of people take part in sporting challenges to raise funds
for this.

• Honoring Heroes
Stadiums full of fans provide a great backdrop to honor true heroes, for exampling
honoring our war heroes on Remembrance Day.
12 WAYS SPORT MAKES A POSITIVE
IMPACT
• Team and Player Foundations
Many professional athletes have foundations. There
are hundreds, in fact, with causes ranging from promoting
healthy lifestyles to diabetes awareness.

• Emotion
One of the most positive things about sports is the pure,
unadulterated joy that can result—for the players, coaches,
fans and everyone involved.
Sports are emotional, and they can incite great passion.
Sometimes it’s joyful, and other times it’s not. But anytime

The Needs of Sport Development

• The changes of sport should no longer focus on
physical, mental, social, and emotional development
of human being.
• Sport should be more broadened and be more

!"งโหลด…
consistent with the changes in societal circumstances.
Social and Economic development, sport for business,
and sport industrial development are the shift of the
ideas for the new perspectives of sport.

Nilmanee Sriboon Ph.D.

Conclusion
• It is a need for paradigm shift and provocation of people who
are involved in sport to rearrange their sport academics and
manage it for the societal needs.
• Universities and sport faculty should realize the demands of
sport personnel in different angles and wide variety personnel
users.
• Universities should make effort in co-ordinate the sport
disciplines into other disciplinary approaches effectively.
• The sport curriculum at university level should be directed
towards the needs of social changes and social demands.
