SERENADE SANCTUARY
Introduction: Our residential design project, located in the primary residential area of
Kalimati, offers a unique living environment that celebrates the fusion of music, art, and
architecture. The client, a passionate musician, sought a home that would immerse her in a creative
mindset while providing ample natural lighting and a strong connection to the surrounding natural
environment. Inspired by the elegance of the piano, the main concept of the house revolves around
its plan and elevation, incorporating design elements related to music and limitless artistic
expression.
Site Analysis: The site, located in the Kalimati area, offers an ideal primary location just 15
minutes away from essential facilities such as hospitals, supermarkets, schools, and colleges. This
proximity ensures convenience and accessibility for residents. The diversity of the area provides
numerous design possibilities for houses, allowing for creative and unique architectural solutions.
Analyzing the site's SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats), the black cotton soil
emerges as both a strength and a weakness. Its strength lies in its potential for agricultural use,
enabling the cultivation of crops and fostering a sustainable ecosystem. However, its weakness lies
in the requirement for a robust foundation due to the soil's characteristics. Privacy becomes a
potential threat as the site is in close proximity to the city. The site's west orientation and northwest
wind flow present an advantage, facilitating natural ventilation and cooling. A five-story building in
the northeast may pose a challenge by blocking morning sunlight, while a small temple with large
4
peepal trees in the east can be leveraged to maximize air circulation within the house. The moderate
temperature in the area offers a significant opportunity, allowing flexibility in selecting construction
materials. With humidity ranging from 65% to 80% and comfortable temperature variations between
20 to 30 degrees Celsius, the site provides an ideal living environment.
The house is designed to be lively, approachable, and inviting. Every corner of the house is
considered a creative space, allowing artistic expression to flourish. To achieve this, large doors,
windows, and skylights are strategically placed to maximize natural light penetration and create a
bright and vibrant atmosphere.
Artistic elements are incorporated throughout the house. The stairs, for example, feature keys
resembling those of a piano, adding a musical touch to the design. The ceilings in the hallways
mimic piano keys, and musical note shelves are incorporated into the interior decor. These details
infuse the house with a creative and musical ambiance.
The client's desire to be close to nature is fulfilled by integrating green walls in both the interior and
exterior spaces. These living walls not only enhance the aesthetics but also contribute to a healthier
and more sustainable living environment.
To enhance air circulation and connect with the exterior, a brick jalli wall is introduced on the east
side of the house. This feature utilizes the presence of the large peepal tree located on the site to
facilitate natural ventilation.
5
Furthermore, special consideration is given to the children's space. Separate areas are dedicated to
providing them with freedom and a sense of home within the house.
Climate Considerations: The moderate climate of the area allows for the use of
various building materials, including glass, brick, wood, and concrete. To optimize natural airflow
and ventilation, a brick jalli wall is added to the east facade, enabling fresh air from the peepal trees
to enter the kitchen and dining area. The orientation of the house towards the west side accounts for
the road and the prevailing wind flow from the northwest. Moreover, the placement of the kitchen,
dining, and living areas in the southeast and east ensures abundant sunlight throughout the day.
Site and Floorplan Analysis: Upon entering the site, a clear distinction is made
between the pedestrian and vehicular roads, ensuring safety and convenience. In the northwest
corner, there is ample parking space available for two cars and a two-wheeler. Adjacent to the
parking area, a comfortable sitting area is positioned near the entrance of the house. This space
serves as a rest area where clients can relax before entering the house.
Moving towards the southwest side, a dry garden is incorporated into the design. The garden features
small musical note shelves to display succulent plants, creating a unique and artistic element.
Additionally, a cozy sitting area for two people is included in this section, providing a tranquil spot
to enjoy the garden. To add a touch of serenity, a small pond with a water jet is introduced, and the
water pattern changes in sync with the melody played.
6
Adjacent to the dry garden, a barbecue area is situated slightly elevated to provide an enjoyable
outdoor space. This area is perfect for hosting gatherings and relishing outdoor cooking experiences.

from the barbecue
area, a kitchen

ensure convenient
access, a maid's room
is located next to the
kitchen garden,

the kitchen.
To seamlessly
blend the indoor and
outdoor areas, a deck is created in front of the master bedroom and kitchen. This design feature
allows for a smooth transition and provides an inviting space to relax and enjoy the surroundings.
Considering the presence of KEC College and a small temple in the northeast and east areas of the
site, a buffer zone is established to maintain a peaceful environment. This buffer zone consists of
annual trees planted along the eastern and northern sides of the property, contributing to privacy and
a serene atmosphere. Overall, the site and house are west-oriented, designed to optimize natural light
and create a harmonious living environment that connects seamlessly with nature
7
Ground Floor: Upon entering the ground floor from the west side, the layout reveals several
essential spaces. To the left of the entrance is the guest room, strategically positioned to ensure
privacy within the house. Moving forward, the living room is situated on the south side, providing
ample space for at least 8 people. For the convenience of elderly parents, a master bedroom is
located on the ground floor, offering easy accessibility.
8
The open kitchen and dining area are placed on the east side, taking advantage of the morning light.
A deck is accessible from both the master bedroom and the kitchen, providing a seamless connection
between indoor and outdoor spaces. Additionally, a pooja room and storeroom are
conveniently located near the dining area.
First Floor: Ascending to the first floor, a family sitting room awaits, designed to accommodate up
to 10 people. Two bedrooms for the children are provided, each with a separate balcony to foster
their freedom and creativity. On the northwest side of the first floor, a grand master bedroom for the
client is situated, featuring a grand piano that emphasizes the client's passion for music.
Second Floor: Continuing to the second floor, a large hallway with an artistic ceiling leads to the
music studio, considered the heart of the house. The music room is equipped with various musical
instruments and includes a dedicated recording studio. Adjacent to the music room, a small theater
and bar are provided for luxurious and entertaining experiences.
On the terrace, a small swimming pool is available for the family members to enjoy, offering a
refreshing space. A small garden is also incorporated to provide a change of scenery and relaxation
for the client, considering the potential monotony of creating music throughout the day.
The second floor is considered an extremely private space within the house, reserved for family
members to enter and enjoy their personal time.
Overall, the layout of the house encompasses various functional spaces, including living areas,
bedrooms, a music studio, and recreational spaces, while ensuring privacy and catering to the
specific needs and passions of the client and her family.
9
Material Selection and Elevation: The elevation of the house embraces the
timeless beauty of a piano by incorporating black and white colors throughout the design. The walls
are painted in a crisp white hue, while the windows feature black stripes, resembling the keys of a
piano. To add a musical touch, a circular window is installed on the east side of the music studio,
enhancing the thematic element.
On the north side of the house, a piano key pattern is incorporated into the design, further
emphasizing the musical concept. In contrast, the south side features a dramatic entrance with curved
faces adorned in alternating black and white stripes, enhanced by glass elements. This design
element creates a captivating play of light and shadow. Additionally, the brick jalli on the east side
of the house contributes to this effect.
To add an acoustic appeal, the exterior walls of the master bedroom are adorned with wooden
stripes, providing a natural and warm aesthetic. This design choice enhances the overall ambiance
and creates a visually appealing focal point.
In order to create a connection with nature, two walls of the house are adorned with green grass,
vertical wooden stripes, and glass in an alternating pattern. This incorporation of natural elements in
the elevation design adds a sense of tranquility and a harmonious blend with the surroundings.
Throughout the house, the ceilings in the hallways feature a combination of black, white, and
transparent stripes, further accentuating the musical theme and providing a visually striking element.
Overall, the elevation design embraces the essence of a piano, utilizing black and white colors,
musical motifs, and natural elements to create a visually captivating and harmonious facade that
reflects the client's love for music and nature.
The materials used in the project primarily include concrete, wood, glass, and neutral tones to
maintain a harmonious and aesthetic facade. The elevation design is intricately connected to the
piano concept, with windows designed to resemble ribbons and bordered in black and white,
emulating the colors of a piano. Glass and green walls are incorporated to seamlessly blend the
interior and exterior, providing a natural environment and strengthening the connection to music and
the client's interests. The section of the house reveals important details about its vertical
composition. The ground floor consists of a single floor level with 20 stairs, reaching a total height
of 10 feet. However, the upper floor is slightly taller to accommodate the unique form of a piano,
making the overall height of the house 37 feet 6 inches.
The section also indicates the presence of a pool on the terrace, which has a depth of 5 feet. This
addition provides a recreational space for the residents and adds to the overall aesthetic appeal of the
house.
Furthermore, the section mentions that the walls of the house have a thickness of 9 inches. This
specification ensures structural stability and insulation within the building.

Unique Features and Interiors: The house boasts several unique features that
contribute to its distinctive character and functionality. These features include:
1. Exterior and Interior Green Walls with Vertical Wooden Stripes: The incorporation of green
walls on the exterior and interior of the house, along with vertical wooden stripes, brings a
natural and refreshing touch. This design element creates a closer connection to nature and
adds to the overall aesthetic appeal.
2. Big Windows and Doors: The large windows and doors in the house not only provide ample
natural light but also create a sense of spaciousness. They contribute to a feeling of openness
and allow for passive cooling by promoting cross-ventilation.
3. Hallway Ceilings with Black and White Stripes: The ceilings in the hallways are adorned
with black and white stripes, which serve multiple purposes. These stripes enhance the
lighting within the house and add visual interest. Additionally, they contribute to the acoustic
appeal, enhancing the overall sound experience within the space.
4. Musical Note Shelves: The inclusion of musical note shelves inside the house and in the site
adds an artistic flare. These shelves serve as creative displays for collectibles and decorative
items, paying homage to the client's passion for music.
11
5. Glass with Keys of Piano: The use of glass panels with keys resembling a piano creates a
dramatic entry of light into the house. This design element adds a unique and visually
striking aspect, combining functionality with aesthetics.
These unique features come together to create a house that not only provides a comfortable
and functional living environment but also reflects the artistic and nature-oriented
preferences of the client.
