Speed
Series 4 Controller
for Steam Turbines
The Series 4 Steam Turbine (Speed) Controller is designed to
provide precise, sophisticated speed control for virtually any
steam turbine. In addition to rotational speed control, the Speed
Controller offers an impressive list of standard functions,
PID including:
■ Automated Turbine Start-up and Shutdown
■ Triple Redundancy on Magnetic Pick-up Inputs
A/D
■ Critical (Resonant) Speed Avoidance
■ Overspeed Protection
The Speed Controller is optionally available with high-speed
valve position control and synchronous generator control.
As an Application Function Module in the Series 4 family of
turbomachinery control products, the Speed Controller offers the
added benefit of easy integration with other Application Function
Modules, including the Series 4 Valve Management Controller,
the Series 4 Autosynchronization Controller, and the Series 4
Extraction Controller.

Automated Turbine Start-up and Shutdown
The Speed Controller provides complete turbine start-up and
shutdown control to ensure that your turbine is brought on and off
line quickly and correctly. By allowing the Speed Controller to
perform the start-up and shutdown sequences, you eliminate the
possibility of turbine damage due to operator error. The Speed
Controller also protects against resonant speeds, overspeed
conditions, and excessive start-up valve opening rates that occur
during start-up and shutdown sequences.
Triple Redundancy on Magnetic Pick-up Inputs
The Speed Controller gives you protection against failures of
magnetic pick-ups. You can connect up to three pick-ups,
providing triple redundancy on speed inputs.
When all three speed inputs are used, the Speed Controller goes
one step further to protect your turbine by providing 2-of-3 voting
as a standard feature. This voting scheme selects the median of
the three speed measurements when all three pick-ups are
operational, or selects the highest of the two remaining speed
values if a pick-up failure occurs.
The Speed Controller also monitors the magnetic pick-up inputs
for excessive deviation between the speed measurement values.

control package, and the generator breaker is opened while the
generator is on-line, the Speed Controller protects the equipment
■ Complete integration of speed,
by rapidly reducing or even cutting off the steam flow to the
extraction, and valve turbine. This can prevent overspeed without tripping the turbine.

generator control Total Train Control ® Systems
The Series 4 Speed Controller is designed around the concept of
a Total Train Control (TTC) system. A TTC system provides an
integrated approach to control for an entire turbomachinery train
or network of trains; it also provides fully-integrated system start-
up and shutdown, decoupling of control loops, and load-sharing
algorithms for multimachine networks. The advantages of such a
system are repeatable start-ups, tighter control, prevention of
trips due to adverse control loop interactions, and improved
energy savings.
