Lesson # ___1_ of __1___ Grade Level: 3

Central Focus Using a Line Plot to Represent Data

NY-3.MD.4 Generate measurement data by measuring lengths using rulers

marked with halves and fourths of an inch. Show the data by making a line
Standard
plot where the horizontal scale is marked off in appropriate units—whole
numbers, halves, or quarters.

Learning Students will be able to create and interpret line plots using given data sets
Objective by accurately placing data points on a number line on a given worksheet.

Materials Promethean Board, Math Workbook, Line Plot Worksheet

The purpose of learning line plots is to help students develop analytical

Purpose skills so that they can analyze data patterns, identify trends, create line
plots, and draw conclusions based on information presented on a graph.

Begin the lesson by asking students if they’ve heard about line plots.
Introduce the concept of line plots, “A line plot is a kind of picture that
helps us see how many times something happens. So we use little X marks
and a line to show information.” Draw a line on the board and write down
ice cream flavors underneath the line. Ask students what their favorite ice
cream flavor is and start naming some that was written on the board. Count
the amount of hands raised for each ice cream flavor. The number collected
for each ice cream flavor should be put in a data set. Afterwards, explain
how each little X mark represents a student. Then proceed to represent the
Instruction data with X marks according to the data set. As the line plot is complete,
ask students what things they notice about the line plot. “What ice cream
flavor had the most votes?” The introduction portion is completed after you
review the step by step process of creating a line plot.

After the modeling of the line plot, ask the students to take out their math
workbooks and turn to 93. Ask them what should should be written under
the line plot graph. It should be Numbers of Years in This School. Inform
students that their line needs to have two arrows at the side. Ask students
how many years there are in total. Then write down 1 through 6 under the
line. Call on students and ask how many X marks there should be for each

number. Proceed to do this until you reach 6 years. After that, give students
five minutes to work on page 94. After time is up, call on some students to
share.

Learning Task Students will complete the line plot worksheet individually.

To end the lesson, the class will review what they learned about line plots.

Line Plot Worksheet

For students that struggle reading a line plot, make a line plot of a smaller
data set.
Differentiation
To help students who are multilingual learners, describe the data and
provide sentence starters. For example: The least number of years on the
line plot is ________.
