Four Year Career/Educational Plan

Freshman/Sophomore/Junior/Senior: Junior

Future Occupation: Dentist

Brief Description: "Dentists diagnose and treat problems of teeth, gums, and other parts
of the mouth. They provide advice and instruction on taking care of teeth and gums and
on other issues that affect oral health." (nccareers.org)

Personal Statement (What drives you to this field-Short paragraph): I have always
wanted to work in the medical field since I was little, but only recently have I set my
mind on dentistry. One of the reasons I want to be a dentist is because I have personally
experienced how having nice teeth can impact one's self-esteem. Having nice, clean, and
straight teeth can give people the confidence to smile more and help people feel better
about themselves. Additionally, I know that dental care can be very expensive. Many
people would rather live with tooth pain than go to the dentist because they can't afford it.
Because of this, it is also my goal to find a way to offer affordable dental care to those
who can not afford to go to the dentist. Lastly, I am also driven to work in this field
because of the money.

Current Average Yearly Salary: $163,000

Degree Options/Required and Licensure required:

- Bachelor's degree (most common major is biology)

- Doctor of Dental Medicine (DDM) or Dental Surgery (DDS) Degree
- Dental license issued by the state after passing the National Board Dental
Examination

Professional School Admission Requirement:

- Bachelor's of Science degree

- Dental Admissions Test (DAT) - at least 18 for most schools
- Experience (internships, shadowing, and volunteering)
