Dear Parent/Guardian,

On July 1, 2015, Section 50.1 of the School Act replaced Section 11.1 of the Alberta Human
Rights Act. The Calgary Board of Education is still required to provide parents with notice
"where courses of study, educational programs or instructional materials, or instruction or
exercises...include subject matter that deals primarily and explicitly with religion and
human sexuality."

Your child is currently enrolled in the Alberta Education Career and Life Management
(CALM) Program of Study for high school students. Our school has elected to deliver the
Alberta Learning Career and Life Management (CALM) curriculum in an online course.
The program aims to enable students to make well-informed, considered decisions and
choices in all aspects of their lives and to develop behaviors and attitudes that contribute to
the well-being and respect of self and others, now and in the future. Three general outcomes
serve as the foundation for CALM: Personal Choices, Resources Choices and Career
Choices.
Human sexuality education is offered as a mandatory component of the CALM Program of
Study and is contained in learning outcomes which require students to: examine the
relationship between commitment and intimacy in all its levels; identify expectations and
commitments in various relationships; examine a range of behaviours for handling sexual
involvement; describe how personal values play a role in relationships; explain the role of
trust and ways to establish trust in a relationship; develop strategies for dealing with
jealousy; examine aspects of healthy sexuality and responsible sexual behaviour; explain
the ongoing responsibility for being sexually healthy; examine a range of behaviours and
choices regarding sexual expression; describe sexually healthy actions and choices for
one’s body, including abstinence; analyze strategies for choosing; responsible and
respectful sexual expression; describe the ways in which personal values influence choices;
and assess the consequences of being sexually active.

For more specific information about these learning outcomes, parents may wish to go to
Hid

Instruction involving the subject matter is expected to be provided on the Brightspace D2L
shell for students. It is requested that all parent/guardians of students participating in
CALM, either identify that they DO or DO NOT wish to have their student participate in
the Human Sexuality content.

Sincerely,

Jaws
