FLASH AND FIRE POINT TEST APPARATUS

(ASTM D 92 - 18)

1. Purpose:
a. To determine the flash and fire point of bitumen.

2. Operating Instructions:
a. Support the apparatus on a level steady surface.
b. Fill the test cup of apparatus with sample after preparation so
that top of the meniscus of the test specimen is level with the
filling mark.
c. Position the test cup on the center of the heating plate.
d. Turn on the apparatus and apply the test flame on the sample.
e. Record, as the observed flash point, the reading on the
temperature measuring device at the time the test flame
causes a distinct flash in the interior of the test cup.
f. To determine the fire point, continue heating the test sample
after recording the flash point until the test sample ignites and
sustains burning for a minimum of 5s.

3. Maintenance Instructions/Precautions:
a. Wash the test cup with cleaning solvent to remove any test
specimen or traces remaining from a previous test.
b. Ensure that the test cup is completely clean and dry before
use again.
c. Perform the test in a well ventilated place to avoid fume
accumulation.
d. Use gloves and safety googles during conduct of test.
