A particle is projected vertically upwards with a velocity of 49 𝑚𝑠 −1 from a

point A which is at a height of 56 m above the ground. Find
(a) how long after projection, the particle is at a height above the
ground of 134.4 m above the ground for the;
(i) 1st time (ii) 2nd time
(b) time it takes to reach a point B which is at a height of 2.1 m above
the ground.
(c) the velocity with which it passes point B.
(d) the greatest height above the ground attained by the particle.
(e) Calculate the distance covered by the particle during the 7th second
of its motion.

2. A particle A was projected vertically upwards from a point M which is 150 m

above the ground with a speed of 20 ms-1. 5 seconds later, another particle B
was projected vertically downwards from M with a speed of 40 ms-1. Given that
the particles collided at point N which is vertically below M and coalesced on
impact, and taking g=10 ms-2 find,
(a) separation of the particles after a time interval of 6 seconds of B’s motion.
(b) Length of time that particle A took in motion before colliding with B.
(c) height of M above the ground.
(d) Length of time that the combined particle took before hitting the ground
assuming that particles A and B had equal masses.

3. A particle G was projected vertically upwards with speed 25 ms-1 from the
ground. Two seconds later another particle H was projected vertically upwards
from the same point of projection as G with a speed of 50 ms-1. Given that the
particles collided at point O above the ground and stuck together on impact
(a) Find the length of time that H takes in motion before colliding with G.
(b) Find the height of O above the ground.
(c) Determine the common velocity of the combined particle if the masses of G
and H are 90 kg and 9 kg respectively. Hence determine the speed with
which the combined particle hits the ground.
(d) Repeat (c) above if the masses of G and H are 780 kg and 30 kg respectively.

4. A particle A was projected vertically upwards with speed 40 ms-1 from the
ground. 4 seconds later another particle B was projected vertically upwards
from the same point of projection as G with same speed of 40 ms-1. Given that
the particles collided at point O above the ground. Find the height of point O
above the ground.
