ASSIGNMENT-II – KINEMATICS

1) A runner on a straight track covers 1 km in 4 minutes. What is his average velocity

in: (a) km/min, (b) km/s, and (c) km/h ?

2) An object starts from rest and moves with constant acceleration of 4 m/s2 . Find its
speed and the distance it has traveled after 5 s have elapsed.

3) A plane starts from rest and accelerates in a straight line along the ground before
takeoff. It moves 600 m in 12 s. Find (𝑎) the acceleration, (𝑏) speed at the end of
12 s, and (𝑐) the distance moved during the twelfth second.

4) A car moving along the 𝑥-axis has a position given by the formula 𝑥 = 6 + 8𝑡 + 2𝑡 2 ,
where 𝑥 is measured in meters and 𝑡 is in seconds. (a) Find the car's instantaneous
velocity as a function of time. (b) Find its instantaneous acceleration as a function of
time. (c) What will its velocity and acceleration be at 𝑡 = 5 s ?

5) A stone is thrown straight upward and it rises to a height of 20 m. With what speed
was it thrown?

6) A bottle is dropped from a bridge and strikes the water after 5 s. (a) Find the speed of
the bottle when it strikes the water. (b) Find how high the bridge is located above the
water level.

7) A stone is thrown straight upward with a speed of 20 m/s. It is caught on its way
down at a point 5.0 m above where it was thrown. (a) How fast was it going when it
was caught? (b) How long did the trip take?

8) A ball is thrown vertically upward with a speed of 50 m/s from a building 20 m

high. Find:(a) the time 𝑡1 for the ball to reach the highest point, (b) how high it will
rise, (c) how long it will take to return to the starting point, (d) the velocity 𝑣2 of the
ball at this instant, (e) the velocity 𝑣3 with which the ball strikes the ground, and (f)
the total time of flight 𝑡3 .

9) A ball is launched from the ground with an initial speed 𝑣0 of 40 m/s at an angle
𝜃0 = 60∘ towards a cliff of height ℎ, see the figure below. The ball strikes the cliff
after 5 s. Find: (a) the height ℎ of the cliff, (b) the maximum height 𝐻, (c) the speed
of impact, and (d) the horizontal distance between the cliff and the firing point.

10) An airplane is flying horizontally with a constant speed 𝑣0 = 400 km/h at a constant
elevation ℎ = 2 km above the ground. (a) If the pilot decided to release a package of
supplies very close to a truck on the ground, then what is the time of flight of the
package? (b) What is the horizontal distance covered by the package in that time
(which is the same horizontal distance covered by the plane)?

11) A body projected upward from the level ground at an angle of 50∘ with the horizontal
has an initial speed of 40 m/s. (a) How long will it take to hit the ground? (b) How
far from the starting point will it strike? (c) At what angle with the horizontal will it
strike?

12) A body is projected downward at an angle of 30∘ with the horizontal from the top of
building 170 m high. Its initial speed is 40 m/s. (a) How long will it take before
striking the ground? (b) How far from the foot of the building will it strike? (c) At
what angle with the horizontal will it strike?
