Project: Global Monitoring for Environment and Security in Africa (GMES and Africa)

The GMES & Africa (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security and Africa)
Programme is a joint initiative co-financed by the European Commission and the African
Union Commission. The objective of the GMES & Africa Programme is to address the
growing needs of African countries to access and use Earth Observation (EO) data for the
implementation of sustainable development policies across the continent. The Program
specifically is designed to respond to African needs in water, natural resources, marine and
coastal areas as well as address global needs to manage the environment, mitigate climate
change and ensure civil security. It is further designed to enable the implementation of the
African Space Policy and Strategy, that is formulated to harness the continent’s capabilities in
utilizing space science and technology for economic growth and sustainable development.
RCMRD is implementing services in water and natural resources in the East Africa Region
listed below;
1. Land Degradation Monitoring and Assessment
2. Wetlands Monitoring and Assessment and
3. Open Geographic Regional Reference Vector Database for Water and Agro-ecological
Zonation.
The countries covered by RCMRD consortium include: Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia,
Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania
and Uganda. RCMRD is partnering with key institutions in these countries to implement the
project.

Duties and Responsibilities
GMES & Africa project is recruiting Interns to support GMES & Africa in its objectives to
develop geospatial applications and services through the use of Earth Observation data and
products. Applications are requested from Interns from Kenya and neighbouring countries
including Ethiopia, Rwanda, Somalia, Tanzania and Uganda.
Minimum qualifications
Bachelor degree degree in GeoInformation/GIS/Remote Sensing or any other related field with
relevant academic experience
Required skills
• Proven competence in using open-source GIS/RS software
• Programming and automation of spatial processes using GIS programming e.g. python
• Good cartographic skills and design
• Ability to work independently
• Strong communication skills
• Eagerness to learn new skills
