Assignment

1. Two ways to grasp the "nature of Philosophy", elaborate each.

The nature of philosophy can be grasped through two contrasts: with science on
the one hand, and with theology on the other. Beginning with science, since it is
already clear that this branch of study is concerned with the natural world, and it
seeks to understand the world through observation (empirical) and experiment.
In line with this, science helps anyone grasp the nature of philosophy by
providing a framework in understanding the world, as mentioned earlier that it is
concerned with the natural world thus it provides a concrete explanation (not at
all times) to our understanding of philosophical questions.
On the other hand, the nature of philosophy can be grasped through
theology, since theology similar to science provides a framework in
understanding God and His relationship to the world. This in turn would help us
understand some philosophical questions about God, say for example: his
essence, existence, nature and the like. However, the same with science,
theology cannot as well provide all answers to philosophical questions. In a way
theology regulates our mind to think critically and especially dealing with both
philosophical and theological questions in a critical manner.

2. Explain the distinction between history of Philosophy and History of Ideas

History of ideas is the study of the development of ideas or ideas in general

including those that are philosophical. It is therefore clear that the history of ideas
needs to only have an historical influence in human affairs. While on the other
hand, to be part of the history of philosophy an idea must be of intrinsic
philosophical significance, capable of awakening the spirit of enquiry in a
contemporary person, and representing itself as something that might be
arguable and even true.

3. How did Plato and Aristotle impact/influence the rise of modern philosophy?

-Plato and Aristotle have been two of the most influential philosophers especially
in the rise of the modern period, because their ideas and questions can be found
in the works of modern philosophers. Take for example the concept of
substance, the nature of universals, and the issue of free will and human nature
have its roots taken or borrowed from these two philosophers. Aristotle and Plato
were the first to conceive of theories, questions and answers which were later
either refuted or supported by different modern philosophers. One can therefore
conclude that both philosophers (Plato and Aristotle) were influential in the rise of
modern philosophy
