Mapping Formats used with FalconView

GeoTIFF (tagged image file format) is a format in which imagery that originates from
satellite imaging systems, scanned aerial photography, scanned maps, digital elevation
models, or as a result of geographic analyses is tied to a known model space or map
projection. GeoTIFF uses a small set of reserved TIFF tags to store a broad range of
georeferencing information, catering to geographic as well as projected coordinate
system needs

ARC Digitised Raster Graphics (ADRG) are digital raster representations of paper
graphic products. Maps/charts are converted into digital data by raster scanning and
transforming the map image into the ARC (equal Arc second Raster Chart/map) system
frame of reference. The data is further broken up into Distribution Rectangles which are
minimum bounding rectangles containing all the Raster products within the DR merged
into one graphic. Data collected from a single chart/map series and scale will be
maintained as a worldwide seamless database of raster graphic data with each pixel
having a distinct location. ADRG has been produced from paper maps in the following
scales ARC1 1:1 000 000 Operational Navigational Chart, ARC2 1: 500 000 Tactical
Pilotage Chart, ARC5 1:250 000 Joint Operations Graphic, ARC6 1:100 000
Topographic Line Map and ARC7 1:50 000 Topographic Line Maps

Compressed ARC Digitised Raster Graphics (CADRG) are digital raster representations
of paper graphic products. CADRG is derived directly from ADRG and other digital
sources through downsampling, filtering, compression and reformatting to the Raster
Product Format (RPF) standard. CADRG files are physically formatted within a National
Imagery Transmission Format (NITF) message. CADRG has been produced in the
following scales ARC1 1:1 000 000 Operational Navigational Chart, ARC2 1: 500 000
Tactical Pilotage Chart, ARC5 1:250 000 Joint Operations Graphic, ARC6 1:100 000
Topographic Line Map and ARC7 1:50 000 Topographic Line Maps.

Controlled Image Base (CIB) is an unclassified seamless data set of greyscale

orthophotos, made from rectified imagery. CIB are produced from digital source images
and are compressed and reformatted to conform to the Raster Product Format (RPF)
standard. CIB supports various weapons systems, mission planning, digital moving map
displays, terrain analysis, simulation and intelligence systems.

DTED Level 1 - A uniform matrix of terrain elevation values, which provides basic
quantitative data for military systems that require terrain elevations, slope, and/or surface
roughness information. Level 1 post spacing is 3 arc seconds (approximately 100 meters).

DTED Level 2 - A uniform matrix of terrain elevation values, which provides basic
quantitative data for military systems that require terrain elevations, slope, and/or surface
roughness information. Level 2 post spacing is 1 arc second (approximately 30 meters).

The VMAP(Vector SmartMap) program is designed to provide vector-based geospatial

data at medium (level 1) and high (level 2) resolution. Data is separated into 10 thematic
layers consistent throughout the VMAP program. Each layer contains thematically
consistent data. A reference library is provided with general information to orient the
user. All data is topologically structured. Each coverage contains a set of files that
describe the features in that thematic layer. Data volume is tiled at nominal one degree
(level 1) and 15 minutes (level 2) expanding in size towards the poles. Cross-tile
topology is maintained. Prototype data is provided with VPFView software and
symbology styles.

information, not used much, very old (1960's).
