Reflection on the Disciplinary Research Assignment

Recently, we completed a two-page essay on a discipline of our choice, and we had to

find a scholar of said discipline. In my essay, I chose to write about Dr. Alfredo Campbell, who

is a psychology faculty member at Howard University. Truth be told, Dr. Campbell wasn’t my

first choice. My original essay was on Jordan Stanley, a jazz musician, but sadly, my first essay

wasn’t correct. My switch to Dr. Campbell was very slow, but with the help of my lovely

professor, he recommended I look at the faculty at Howard University. There, I found many

potential candidates to write about, but Dr. Campbell stood out. He was the only

From reading and analyzing this research on “perceived stress and eating behaviors in a

community-based sample of African Americans,” it was an eye-opener on how many studies do

not include research that could help the African American community. Hence, the study has been

conducted. In addition, this encourages me to continue in my efforts to complete my academic

journey so that instead of eating to overcome stress, the AA community can use different

approaches such as music, dance, and art to battle the negative emotions and thoughts when

stressed.

In conclusion, I have learned that psychology isn’t just about getting into one's brain, but

understanding why a person acts and feels a certain way. This article has also made me wonder

what other struggles have been studied but have not been made aware of in the African American

community.
