How It Works
Berberine supports healthy blood-glucose
levels and insulin sensitivity through various

involve AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPk).

Dear Abby,
I have a couple of questions about
5HTP, which arise from my contact
with people who are well-informed on
the effects of SSRIs. First, 5HTP is
listed as a “serotonin precursor.” Does
this necessarily indicate that it has the
same potential side effects of SSRIs?
Second, if someone were taking the
anti-depressant Wellbutrin, which is an
NRI (as opposed to SSRI), does the
same caution on interaction apply as
with SSRIs?

Dear Earlene,
Although 5HTP potentially could cause
the same side effects as SSRIs, I’ve
never known it to cause any side effects
in my clients.
In the weight loss studies with 5HTP,
with doses as high as 900 mg daily, the
most common side effect reported was
gastrointestinal intolerance and diarrhea.
In normal use, doses are rarely taken
that high. If your SSRIs cause side
effects, I doubt that 5HTP would have
the same effect, because 5HTP does not
raise peripheral levels of serotonin – it is
converted to serotonin in the brain.
The cautions of combining 5HTP with
SSRIs do not apply when combining
5HTP and Wellbutrin, since Wellbutrin
is not an SSRI, but, as you mentioned,
a NRI.

My short-term memory is declining
noticeably. I think this just may be a
normal aging process. I would very

supplements to take to reverse this

Dear David,
This topic is covered extensively in
several issues of our Abby’s Magazine
(Volume 2 Issue 3, which covers Brain
Health, as well as Volume 3 Issue 6,
which covers Alzheimer’s, etc.). I think
one of the most effective, fastest-acting
substances for improving short term
memory is Vinpocetine, which improves
neuronal metabolism, blood flow, and
utilization of glucose. It also often provides
almost immediately noticeable effects.
Both Ginkgo Biloba and Huperzine A
also improve blood flow. I recommend
a synergistic blend of these cognitive
enhancing nutritional elements. “Higher
Mind” and “Neuro Optimizer” are
great examples. For long term use,
also consider acetyl L-carnitine or
phosphatidylserine. Nothing works equally
well for everyone, so trial and error is
sometimes required to find what works
best for you.

Dear Abby,
I am 70 years old and have many
dental cavities along my gum line. My
dentist explained that since my gums
have receded, the exposed softer tooth
enamel is subject to decay and he
believes that sodium fluoride will harden
the enamel. I use baking soda and salt
when brushing my teeth.
I am now using a xylitol toothpaste
and I dissolve some xylitol crystals
in water for a mouthwash. Do you
approve of this mouthwash? Also,
what is your opinion on fluoride and
what can be taken to improve the
re-mineralization of your teeth? I don’t
wish to become toothless.

Dear Robert,
I am totally opposed to fluoride. The
research demonstrates its dangers. I
would not suggest you brush your teeth
with salt as this may harm your gums and
contribute even more to your receding
gums. Instead, I recommend “The
Secret”. Mix 1 part fine Himalayan pink
salt with 3 parts baking soda and keep dry
in a container on your sink. Place some
of this mixture in the palm of your hand
and add a few drops of colloidal silver
to make a “mush”. Using an extremely
soft toothbrush, push this “mush” gently
into your gum line. Do not brush! You
are trying to gently push this mixture into
the sulcus of each tooth where there are
pockets of bacteria. Your pocket depth
should not be greater than 2. In addition,
start “oil pulling,” a technique that attracts
the bacteria from your teeth and gums.
Take 1 or more tablespoons of organic
cold-pressed sesame oil or virgin coconut
oil and vigorously squeeze the oil
between your teeth for 10-15 minutes or
more. Repeat oil pulling morning and night
and follow with “The Secret.” Your dentist
will be amazed! Xylitol is a smart choice
as it encourages the growth of good
bacteria in your mouth and discourages
the bad bacteria.

Fingernail and tongue diagnosis has
evolved over thousands of years,
resulting in a methodology so precise
and natural that it is hailed among
practitioners as an enlightened art
form. Over the years, doctors have
learned to derive qualities
from fingernail and tongue
diagnosis specific to their
field of medicine. My
own father was a doctor
for forty-five years, and
I myself have had over
thirty years of experience
in the field. Together we
have been able to combine
both eastern and western
methodologies to create a
unique program of physical
diagnosis. Both patients
and doctors alike have
been urging me to secure
this valuable information
in print. I hope my book
will serve as both an
innovative guide to medical
diagnosis and a means to
carefully bridge together
two important schools of
thought, culminating in
an advanced look at the
future of medicine and preventative
diagnosis based on physical markers.
And unlike most other handbooks on
Chinese medicine, dismissing what

Western science, my approach allows
one to combine culturally competent
methodologies to achieve the most
accurate and effective results.
My method of physical diagnosis
started out as an analysis of
the fingernails and the tongue.
Throughout the years, I have had
the opportunity to analyze many
patients and have managed to
compile the clinical data of over
10,000 cases from around the world.
Readers should note that diseases
do not always have easily
detectable causes and
symptoms. In some cases
a disease may manifest as
quite different symptoms in
different people. Similarly,
different diseases can
cause the same symptoms
in people. In the old days,
primary care physicians
spend a lot of time with
patients to check their
medical history, their
physical symptoms and so
on. It was a more thorough
checkup in many ways.
However, primary care
checkups now are not what
they used to be. With more
patients than doctors and
with the arrival of managed
care, patients end up
spending more time with
the nurse than with their
doctor. And even then,
nurses are unable to spend enough
time with each patient.
Preventive care is important so each
of us needs to be more observant
of our body’s changes. This is where
fingernail, tongue and body analysis
will be most helpful. By learning
how to recognize physical markers
and what they mean, health issues
can be addressed very early and
complications can be avoided.
Arriving at an accurate analysis is
often a difficult task. Looking at one
or two physical markers may not be
enough to determine a health issue.
It is therefore important to use
other symptoms or physical markers
as confirmation of a diagnosis.
I have written the first edition of
my book, Dr. Chi’s Fingernail and
Tongue Diagnosis, in response to
the large demand of people who
wish to learn more about this
cultural and family treasure. From
the mention of my techniques in an
October 1996 Scientific American
article to countless phone calls to
our office in Anaheim, the public is
becoming increasingly interested in
my diagnostic methods.
This diagnostic technique is an
evolving process. Therefore, as I see
more patients, I am able to collect
more case studies that are worth
sharing. Five years after the first
edition, I updated the book and
came up with Dr. Chi’s Fingernail
and Tongue Analysis. The second
edition had additional diagnostic
tools as well as illustrations.
Since the last edition, I have
compiled more data and pictures
supporting the analysis. Over these
past seven years, I have changed
the technique to include not just
the fingernail and tongue but
other body markers as well for a
more thorough examination. In
this third edition I have provided
numerous pictures that clearly

illustrate these physical markers
and which I hope will aid you as
you learn this method.
Sometimes it is not enough to
evaluate the physical markers
and determine which health
conditions are associated with
them. We must also learn how
to address these health issues.
Throughout my book, I make
dietary recommendations and
herbal supplement suggestions
so that you will have a more
complete care plan. I briefly
outlined each herbal formula
I mentioned in one of the
appendices. A more detailed
discussion of herbal usage for
various illnesses is explained in
my recent book, Dr. Chi’s Herbal
Formulas 2nd Edition.
Finally, my book seeks to provide
patients and practitioners with a
better understanding of my life’s

2 cups organic brown rice

¼ cup organic cilantro, chopped
2 tablespoons organic lemon juice
Himalayan salt to taste
Black pepper to taste

Cook the rice in a rice cooker until done. Add all the remaining ingredients and mix well.

which organ system is out of balance.

3. The emotion/behavior displayed (fear, anger, joy,

Why does the industry spend millions
trying to suppress labeling?
Their excuse is that labeling will raise
the cost of food for poor people. The
fast food industry made that same
argument for decades to fight the legal
requirement to reveal the “nutrition”
content of their foods. Americans won
that one, with fast foods remaining
relatively cheap. You can walk into
any fast food place and ask for their

nutrition chart; they must have it ready to
give to you.

Exciting for the American consumer is
that the USDA has announced its plans
to write totally new guidelines for GE
oversight. Long overdue, it is the reason
why industry spokespersons are flooding
the media with their stories.
GE foods flood our supermarkets,
without the right for the consumer
to know. Estimates calculate that 75
percent of frozen and processed foods
have GE ingredients. Over 90 percent of
our corn, soya, canola, cotton seed are GE.
Wheat is not yet commercially GE because
farmers across the Midwest rose up and
made Monsanto put that seed back on the
shelf; farmers did not want to pay high
prices for the seed, while not being able to
sell GE wheat around the world.
The science is still out on
the safety of GE foods for
humans, mainly because the
industry keeps their research
private. Editors of Scientific
American concluded,
“Unfortunately, it is impossible
to verify that genetically
modified crops perform as
advertised. That is because
agritech companies have given
themselves veto power over the work
of independent researchers.”
Human health effects of GE food
can include higher risks of toxicity,
allergic reactions, antibiotic resistance,
and immune-suppression. Those
countries that ban GE are enforcing the
international law (Cartagena Protocol)
of the “precautionary principle,”
allowing governments to act because
of potential negative effects on humans
and the environment. Irreversible
harm may already have been done
before science conclusively rules
about hazards.
In contrast, the science is very clear
about the effects of herbicides and
pesticides sprayed on our food
crops, genetically engineered to
withstand the poisons. Although
causality is often difficult to
demonstrate, Monsanto has agreed
(see their website) that its glyphosate
(Round-up Ready) herbicide,
killing milkweed, is a major cause
for the 81 percent decline of monarch
butterflies. Although the monarch is a
major pollinator for American farmers,
Monsanto has offered only $4 million to
mitigate the disaster.
EPA completely ignored the impact on
monarchs…and seriously underestimated
the toxicity for people.” The World Heath
Organization now classifies glyphosate
as a “probable carcinogen” and thanks to
decades of spraying, the chemical is
now abundant in air and waters in U.S.
rural communities.
GE crops also threaten your choice for organic
foods. A recent USDA study (“Transgenic
Feral Alfalfa…” 12/23/15) documents a 27
percent contamination rate of areas beyond
GE fields. Already in 2014, China
rejected GE contaminated corn
shipments, costing U.S. agriculture
almost $3 billion. Contamination
of organic or hybrid crops can
come from cross-pollination,
mixing during storage or of the
seeds before planting.
As the Center for Food Safety
concludes, we now have “the
absurd spectacle of the U.S.
(the world’s leading corn and
soybean producer) importing
organic corn and soy from countries like
Romania and India. Fear of transgenic
contamination is one factor deterring
more U.S. farmers from meeting America’s
growing demand for organic foods.”

they [monarchs] need to survive….

To exercise our freedom of choice,

we must demand that formulation of new USDA
guidelines for GE crops consider the following:

• rapid evolution of herbicide-resistant weeds and pesticide-resistant insects;

• contamination of water/air;

• and transgenic contamination of traditional or organic crops. You have the right to know.

Over the years, as
I was getting older,
I started to feel run
down and I was
gaining weight that
the gym wasn’t able
to take off. I started
going to a weight loss
clinic and they put me
on what they called
hormone therapy. My
blood test showed
my testosterone level
to be very low so I
did the HCG diet,
which increased my
testosterone levels.
This did seem to make
me lose weight, gain
muscle mass and feel
generally better. As
part of the medical
weight loss program,
the routine was to get a blood
test every six months. Up to this
point, my PSA was about 3.0 and
they considered that my baseline.

anything under 4.0 was acceptable
in their eyes.

I went to a local urologist
and they suggested
another blood test. The
results again stayed high.
They would always
say I was too young
for prostate cancer.
The initial diagnosis
was enlarged prostate,
elevated PSA, thyroid
disorder and secondary
hypogonadism. They
ordered a biopsy to
be done on December
23, 2013. The results
were 3 of 12 cores to be
cancerous with a Gleason
score ranging from 6 to 7.
Then they ordered more
tests, a bone scan, a CT
scan, and finally an X-ray
of the pelvic region.
Toward the end of 2013, I had a
routine blood test. My PSA jumped
to 5.9. The doctor recommended
we retest to see if this was a false
positive. We waited 4 weeks and did
another blood test. The results were
the same. I was told I need to go see
a specialist.
It is worthwhile to note that prostate
cancer, as with most cancers,
is a very complicated situation.
There are at least 30 different
kinds and any one of us can have
any combination. Most are slow
growing; some are not.
The urology doctor recommended 2
options: a new radiation beam called
Cyber Knife or complete removal of
the prostate.
I started looking for another
opinion. My best friend Scott
recommended I go and see Abby
at Abby’s Health and Nutrition. I

At this time, I was overweight,
my energy levels were very

The consequences of lung inflammation depend on
the cause of the inflammation. Lung inflammation can
refer to irritation and infection of the lung itself, or of
the thin membrane that covers the lungs and lines the
chest cavity, known as the pleura. When the pleural sacs
become inflamed, it is known as pleurisy, and it can
result in fluid accumulating between the two pleural
layers, known as a pleural effusion.
In pneumonia, the lung tissue itself becomes infected,
usually due to bacteria. It is one of the main reasons for
lung inflammation, and causes a phlegm-filled cough,
chest pain when you breathe, shortness of breath,
and fever. Tuberculosis is another, highly contagious
bacterial infection that can cause lung inflammation.
It can cause a chronic, phlegmy cough, night sweats
and fevers. Pneumonia and tuberculosis can both
cause pleurisy, which may cause sharp chest pain

when inhaling, coughing or sneezing. Pleurisy can
also be caused by lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, a
pulmonary embolism, liver diseases, or a drug reaction.

collection of pus in the pleural space. Both these
complications are very serious conditions that need
antibiotic treatment, and maybe even surgery to
remove the abscess or drain the pus. Another extreme

with fluid, and the respiratory failure ensures. This
complication has a high fatality rate and requires
a patient to be in an intensive care unit, receiving
aggressive treatment including receiving extra oxygen
with the help of a ventilator and antibiotics.

Organic Coffee Consumption?

Coffee is the most popular beverage in the world after water,
a standing which helps rank it as one of the largest traded
commodities — second only to oil, according to “The Organic Food
Shopper’s Guide.” Organically grown coffee is free of chemical
residues, an attribute that prompts many connoisseurs to claim it
has a fuller, richer flavor than conventionally grown coffee. Only a
moderate number of coffee drinkers need opt for organically grown
beans to make a substantial positive
impact on the environment and in
the lives of organic coffee farmers.
Environmental Benefits
In an effort to produce less-
expensive coffee, conventional
growers clear-cut rain forests,
creating full-sun coffee plantations
throughout South America, Africa
and southeast Asia. In tropical
regions, nutrients aren’t stored
in the soil, but rather sucked up
for immediate use by the dense,
wide diversity of plant life. With
deforestation, nutrients disappear with the vegetation. Planting a
monocrop coffee farm on soil sapped of nutrients necessitates the
use of chemical fertilizers to feed the plants. Pesticides are another
requirement, because the predators of coffee pests are eliminated
along with the forest. Without the canopy's shade, the ground
water supply dries up, hardening the soil over time. Deforestation
also adversely effects migratory bird populations, which have fewer
places to winter in South America. Most organic coffee growers,
meanwhile, grow their plants in the shade of the rain forest. The
ecosystem provides adequate plant nutrition, and its biodiversity
eliminates the need for chemical pesticides and herbicides.
Health Benefits
The Environmental Protection Agency warns that 30 percent
of insecticides, 60 percent of herbicides and 90 percent of
fungicides are carcinogenic, or cancer-causing. Pesticides and other
conventional farming chemicals accumulate in body fat, and can
cause damage to the nervous and reproductive systems. These

chemicals can also disrupt hormone and immune-system function.
Pregnant and nursing women who ingest traditionally grown coffee
pass the chemical residues on to their fetuses or nursing babies.

more easily by their internal organs. Pesticides and other farming
chemicals have been linked with developmental and behavioral
abnormalities. Drinking organic coffee eliminates the health risks
posed by conventional coffee.

Although not all certified organic

trade growers were paid $1.41 per pound of certified organic coffee.
Considerations
For a coffee to be certified organic, its grower must prove that
both the beans and the soil are fertilizer-, chemical- and residue-
free, which typically takes at least three organic growing seasons
to accomplish. Triple-certified coffees come from farms that hold
Quality Assurance International’s organic certification, are fair trade-
certified and also hold the Smithsonian Institution’s shade-grown
certification. Triple certified arabica beans are the highest-quality
organic beans you can buy. Avoid robusta beans, which are usually
grown on full-sun plantations that damage the environment and
cause significant social turmoil in the regions where they're grown.
