“What is this?” asked Jack.

He showed the paper to his
friends Liz and Ned.
“The paper is very old,”
said Ned.
“The paper is a map!”
Liz said.

Liz pointed to a big black X
on the map.
“This is a treasure map,” said Liz.
“The X shows where a treasure is.”
“Let’s look for the treasure!”
said Jack.

The three friends walked and
walked.
Jack carried the map, and Ned
looked for treasure.
“Maybe the treasure is gold,”
said Jack.
“I like gold!” said Ned.

Then Jack stopped.

He looked at the X on the map.
Then he pointed to the sand.
“The treasure is here,” he said.
Jack and Ned made a hole
in the sand.
“I see the treasure!”
yelled Ned.

Ned and Jack pulled the treasure

box out of the hole.
Jack opened the treasure box.
The three friends looked in the box.
They saw a cactus plant, a rock,
and a twig.
“This is not treasure!” said Liz.

The three friends were sad.
Then Jack said, “But this twig
is a treasure for me.
I will eat it for dinner!”
“This cactus has water in it.
I can drink the water,” said Ned.
“The cactus is a treasure for me.”

“I understand!” said Liz.
“I am cold at night.
This warm rock will help me
be warm. The rock is my
treasure.”
The friends learned that many
things are treasures.
Treasures are not always gold!
