SECTION I (50 Marks)


Answer all the questions in this section in the spaces provided.

1. (a) Evaluate; 34567 − 15.23of 550 (1 mark)

(b) Write the total value of the digit in the thousands place of the results obtained in (a)
above. (1 mark)

2. A truck travels from town A to town B at an average speed of x km/h and at 20 km/h
faster on the return journey. If the round trip takes a total of 5 hours 15 minutes, calculate
the total time the truck would take for the round trip at an average speed of 75 km/h.
(3 marks)

3. A rectangular floor measures 3 metres by 1.95 metres. The floor is carpeted by whole
largest square tiles which can be bought in cartons of 15 tiles each.

Calculate the least number of cartons that must be bought to completely cover the floor.

4. Solve the equation 3  8m − 23m−1 = 40 for m. (3 marks)

5. The number line below represents the solution for the inequality 3x − 2  4 x + p  3x + q .

Find the values of p and q. (3 marks)

6. A given volume of ethanol whose density is 0.79 g/cm3 is mixed with 1 500 cm3 of sea
water of density 1.03 g/cm3 to give a mixture of density 0.88 g/cm3. Calculate the volume
of ethanol in the mixture. (3 marks)

7. An irregular polygon with n sides is such that three of its interior angles measure 144o
each. The remaining interior angles measure 138o each. Determine the value of n.

8. In the figure below, triangle A'B'C' is the image of triangle ABC under an enlargement
centre O and scale factor −2. Construct the triangle ABC. (3 marks)

10. Bill stands 200 metres from a church and measures the angles of elevation of the top and
the bottom of the steeple as 19o and 15o respectively. Calculate the height of the steeple.

11. A business woman arrived in Kenya with 35 000 US dollars which she converted into
Kenya shillings at a time when the exchange rates were as shown in the table below.

While in Kenya, she spent Kshs.3 150 000 and then converted the balance into US dollars
when the exchange rates were up by 2%.

Calculate the amount of money she ended up with to the nearest US dollar. (3 marks)

12. The volume of an open cylinder of radius 10.5 cm is equal to the volume of a sphere of the

13. Using a ruler and pair of compasses only, construct a parallelogram ABCD such that
AB = 8 cm, BC = 6 cm and angle ABC = 105o. Draw a circle to pass through the
vertices ABCD. (4 marks)

14. A bookshop sells an exercise book and a pen for a total of Kshs.130. The bookshop offers
discount of 5% on each item if more than a dozen of it is purchased. A customer bought
15 exercise books and 12 pens for a total of Kshs.1740.

Calculate the amount a customer would pay for 18 pens. (4 marks)

15. Sarah’s clock loses t seconds every hour. She sets the correct time on the clock at 0700
hours on a Tuesday. On Thursday of the same week, the clock showed 1845 hours at
exactly 1900 hours.

16. The height of 25 plants in a nursery were represented in the histogram below.

Using the histogram, determine the median height. (3 marks)

Answer any five questions from this section in the spaces provided.

17. A straight line x − 2 y + 5 = 0 cuts the circle x 2 + y 2 = 25 at points A and B where A lies
on the x – axis. Find;

(a) the coordinates of A and B; (3 marks)

(b) the equation of a line P which is the perpendicular bisector of AB; (4 marks)

(c) the x and y – intercepts of P. (3 marks)

18. An inverted conical container of internal radius 7 cm and height 24 cm is filled with water
to half capacity.

(a) Calculate the volume of water in the container. (2 marks)

(b) Find correct to 2 decimal places;


(i) the radius of the water level in the container; (3 marks)

(ii) the height of water in the container. (2 marks)

(c) Calculate the surface area of the container in contact wit water. (3 marks)

19. A quadratic equation y = Ax 2 + Bx + k cuts the x – axis at the points ( −2,0 ) and ( 4, 0 ) ,
and cuts the y – axis at the point ( 0,8) .

(a) Determine the values of A, B and k. (3 marks)

(b) On the grid provided below, draw the graph of y = Ax 2 + Bx + k for −3  x  5.


(4 marks)

(c) Using the graph in (b) above, find the solution to the equation x 2 − 4 x − 5 = 0.

20. The recording of speed of a moving body started at 36 km/h. The body accelerated
uniformly to a maximum velocity of V m/s in 20 seconds. The body then maintained the
maximum speed for 30 seconds before decelerating uniformly to rest in 10 seconds. If the
total distance covered by the body was 1225 metres;

(a) Determine the value of V in km/h. (3 marks)

(b) Draw a velocity – time graph of the body on the grid provided. (2 marks)

(c) Calculate;
(i) the average speed of the body in m/s during the last 40% of the distance.
(3 marks)

(ii) the deceleration of the body during the last 5 seconds of the body. (2 marks)

21. In the figure below, A, B, C and D are points on a circumference of a circle centre O.
AB = 10 cm, BC = 15 cm, angle ABC = 58o and AD = DC.

(a) Calculate the size of angle;


(i) angle AOC reflex; (1 mark)

(ii) angle ADC. (1 mark)

(b) Calculate correct to 1 decimal place:


(i) the length AC; (2 marks)

(ii) the radius of the circle. (2 marks)

(c) Calculate the area in the circle not covered by the quadrilateral ABCD.

22. Three points B, C and D are such that point B is 62 m due southwest of point D. Point C is
50 m on a bearing of S60oE from point D. A water sprinkler Q is equidistant from the
three points.

(a) Using a scale of 1 cm to represent 10 m, construct a diagram showing the positions of


B, C, D and Q. (5 marks)

(b) Using the scale drawing, determine:


(i) the distance between B and C. (2 marks)

(ii) the compass bearing of C from B. (2 marks)

(c) Posts are placed along a straight line joining points C and D at regular intervals of
2.5 m. Find the number of posts used. (1 mark)

23. A contractor hired Wema and Tatu to transport 144 tonnes of stones to build site A and B.
To transport 48 tonnes of stones for a distance of 28 km, the contractor paid Kshs.24 000.

(a) Wema transported 96 tonnes of stones to site A, a distance of 49 km.

(i) Calculate the amount of money that was paid to Wema. (2 marks)

(ii) For every 8 tonnes of stones Wema transported to site A, he spent Ksh3 000.
Calculate profit Wema made. (3 marks)

(b) Tatu transported the remaining 48 tonnes of stones to site B, a distance of 84 km. If
Tatu made 44 % profit, calculate the amount of money Tatu spent to transport the
stones. (3 marks)

(c) Determine the ratio of the profit made by Wema to that made by Tatu. (2 marks)
