Duty Cycle
Engine Ratings
Categorizing of engines such that the right technology
engine is applied to a specific application
Considers:
•How hard the engine is used
•How many hours per year
•Power density of the engine
•Expected time to overhaul
Engine Ratings
Continuous Duty (CON or CD)
Heavy Duty (HD)
Medium Continuous Duty (MCD or MD)
Intermittent Duty (INT or ID)
High Output (HO) /Government Service (GS)
Engine Power Factor
Power Factor is the time weighted average of the engines load profile
Example:
10% of the time at idle : 12% Load
30% of the time at low cruise : 55% Load
40% of the time at high cruise : 80% load
20% of the time at rated speed : 100% Load
This would be a 70% Power Factor

Duty Cycle is the Power Factor along with the Number of Hours per Year
Continuous Duty (CON or CD)

- Maximum Power Factor = 100%

- Unlimited hours per year

- Typical Power Factor = 70 to 90% Displacement hulls

Fishing trawlers
- Intended for continuous use in applications
requiring uninterrupted service at full power Freighters
Tugboats
Bottom drag trawlers
Towboats
Heavy Duty (HD)
- Maximum Power Factor = 75%

- <5,000 hours per year

- Typical Power Factor = 60 to 75%

Mid-water trawlers
- Intended for nearly continuous use in variable Purse seiners

Medium Continuous Duty (MCD or MD)

- Maximum Power Factor = 60%

- <3,000 hours per year

- Typical Power Factor = 40 to 60% Planing hull ferries
