Concept Digest:
 The term voice refers to the quality of the verb that shows whether the subject is the doer
or the receiver of the action.
 If the subject is the doer of the action, then the verb is in active voice.
 If the subject is the receiver of the action, then the verb is in passive voice.

Example:
Active Voice Passive Voice
Many pupils participated in the poster-making The poster-making contest was participated by
contest. many pupils.

 In changing the voice from active to passive, notice that the phrase “the poster-making
contest” becomes the subject of the new sentence. The verb “participated” transformed
into its past participle and a helping verb “was” is added to form the verb phrase. Then,
the word “by” was added before the phrase “many pupils” and it now becomes a
prepositional phrase to show the receiver of the action.
 In changing the voice from passive to active, the object becomes the new subject and we
transform the verb from its past participle to its past tense and remove the helping verb
used.

Exercise:
Change the following sentences into passive or active voice.
1. These flower vases are bought by my mother.
2. All the beautiful things we are seeing are created by God.
3. “Romeo and Juliet” was written by William Shakespeare.
4. Basty drew an amazing doodle.
5. This lovely dress was given to me by Romy last Christmas.

Valuing:
