What is Passive voice ?

 Passive Voice is a sentence where the subject of the
sentence is subject to work. Passive sentences place
more emphasis on an event, rather than the
perpetrator or person (sentence subject). Or it can be
said that Passsive Voice is a grammatical form where
the subject in a sentence or clause does not take
action, but accepts the action.
What is Passive voice ?

 To convert an active sentence into a passive sentence,
the sentence to be changed usually has a transitive
verb. But not all transitive verbs, verbs that have
direct objects, can be passive. Some of the verbs
which include: have, become, lack, look like, mean,
etc. will sound unnatural in meaning when passive.
Formula Passive Voice

 Subject + be + Verb3 + by + Object + modifier
Information :
 The subject of active voice becomes the object of
passive voice
 Object of active voice becomes subject of passive voice
 Verb 1 in active voice becomes verb 3 in passive voice.
 added be ‘is’ in front of verb3. (Not all sentences
added ‘is’)
Passive Voice Tenses

1. Simple Present Tense
Rumus : Subject + (am/is/are) + v3 + object
Example :
 They are met by him everyday.
 This plant is watered by her every two days.
 His father is always helped by Jhon in the garden.
Passive Voice Tenses

2.  Simple Past Tense
Rumus : Subject + was/were + v3 + object
Example :
 They were met by him yesterday
 This plant was watered by her this morning
 This English book was bought by Diana last week.
Passive Form of Modals

 In addition to basic sentence patterns in 12 tenses,
passive sentences can also be formed using auxiliary
modal. In a passive sentence that uses one auxiliary
capital, there is a provision, that between auxiliary
capital and the verb there must be the word "be".
A. Pola kalimat menggunakan can-could

Formula : S + can/could + be + past participle
Example :
 This novel can be transleted by his brother into
Indonesian.
 We could be helped by him transleted the book into
English.

B. Pola kalimat pasif menggunakan may-might.
Rumus : S + may/might + be + past participle
Example :
 This room may be used by them to do their exercises.
 Certain books might be borrowed by them from this
library.

C. Pola kalimat pasif menggunakan must.
Rumus : S + must + be + past participle
Example :
 All the money must be reimbursed by him next week.
 This message must be sent by her next month.
MORE EXAMPLES :

 Koko’s nose is bleeding. He was punched by his friend
right on his nose. (Hidung Koko sedang berdarah. Dia
dipukul oleh temannya tepat di hidungnya).
 The Indonesian football team was beaten by the Saudi
Arabian team. (Team sepakbola Indonesia dikalahkan oleh
team arab Saudi).
 These plants were watered by my sister a few minutes ago.
(Tanaman-tanaman ini disirami oleh adikku beberapa
menit yang lalu).
Exeption to Transitive Verbs

 Not all transitive verbs, verbs that have direct
objects, can be passive. Some of the verbs include:
have, become, lack, look like, mean, etc. It will sound
unnatural in meaning when passive. Some examples
of sentences from the verb are as follows.
Contoh:
 I have a great new idea. —> cannot be passive with : 
A great new idea is had by me.
 The snack contains aspartame. —> cannot be passive
with : Aspartame is contained by the snack.
