How to Assign Pixel Art
in Google Classroom
1. In Google Classroom, head to the
"Classwork" section of the group to
whom you are assigning the activity.
2. Click "Create", then choose
assignment from the drop down menu
3. Type a Title and Description for your
assignment
4. Give the assignment a point value, due
date and/or topic (if needed)
5. Click on the Google Drive icon to locate
the Student Copy version of the pixel
art in your drive.
6. Click on the file and click the "insert"
button at the bottom of the window.
7. Click "Students can view file" and
change it to "Make a copy for each
student" from the drop down.
8. Finally, click "Assign" button on the
upper right corner of the window. (If
you click on the arrow, you can choose
to schedule the assignment for a
specific date and time instead).
Helpful Tips
Student device screens vary in size. Show
students how to zoom in and out in Google
sheets to be able to see the pixel image as they
are working.

If students accidentally delete a problem or make

changes to the formatting- simply click UNDO! The
undo button can fix the majority of problems. You
can also use revision history to restore an earlier
version of the sheet.

Do NOT copy and paste from one answer cell to

another. Doing so will also copy the conditional
formatting of the cell and will negatively impact
the final image.

Answers must be typed exactly as shown in the

key to be marked correct by Google Sheets. If a
student complains that they have the correct
answer but nothing is happening, it is very often
due to having typed a space before or after
their answer.

After entering an answer, students must click

out of the answer cell OR click "return/enter" to
see if their answer is correct.

If students are working on an iPad, they must

download the Google Sheets App from the App
Store. Navigating on a Google Sheet takes a
little getting used to on an iPad, but it is doable.

If you do not use Google Classroom, you can also

share a force copy link with students. First make
sure to change your file's share permission to
"anyone with a link can view". Then, make a copy
of the link and replace the word 'edit' at the end
of the file to "copy".
