Is Rejection Good or
Example;
Bad?
0 handle
9 Different people (0) handle rejection differently. Rejection stops some people from
10
trying again, while others bounce back (9)to rejection stronger than before. Everyone will
11
experience
12 the sting of rejection at some point (10)of life, but only mentally strong people use
that
13 pain to grow stronger and become better. The way you (11)chooses to respond to
rejection
14 could determine your future. Therefore, it is essential to learn how to handle
15
rejection in life.
16 First, we need to acknowledge (12) their emotions. We must admit that when we
are (13) reject we feel embarrassed, sad, disappointed or discouraged. However, we must be
able to deal with the uncomfortable emotion head-on and not let it (14) defeated us. Next, we
need to view rejection as a proof that you are living life to the fullest. If you never get rejected,
it is a sign that you have been (15)live inside your comfortable zone. On the other hand, you
know that you are pushing yourself to your limits when you get turned down every now and
then. In addition, we must not make sweeping generalizations when we are rejected. If one
company turns you down for a job, you should not declare yourself incompetent. Instead, you
should keep rejection in a proper perspective and analyse the reason for rejection.

Why Are You Shy?

Shyness is a feeling of fear or discomfort caused by other people, especially in new situations or among
strangers. It’s an unpleasant feeling of self-consciousness – a fear of what you believe others are thinking of
you negatively. Shyness can vary in strength. Many people feel mild feelings of shyness and that can be
easily overcome. Others feel extreme fear of social situations, and this immense shyness can be destructive
to their social life. Consequently, these people might withdraw from social activities or suffer anxiety and
depression.

Perceptions of shyness are a cultural issue. Some cultures, such as many of those in the United States,
tend to regard it negatively. They perceive shyness as an indication of low self-confidence. Others, such as
some Asian cultures, especially China and Japan, tend to regard shyness more positively. They perceive it as
an indication of politeness and modesty.

There are many causes of shyness. Research has confirmed that genes play a small part in shaping a shy
personality among people. However, it should be noted that a propensity for shyness is influenced by social
experiences. For example, it is believed that the most shy children develop shyness because of interactions
with parents. Parents who are authoritarian or overprotective can cause children to be shy. It is because
their children are not allowed to experience things in the outside world and that causes them to have
trouble developing social skills.

A number of strategies can mitigate the effects of shyness. First shy people should reframe their
mindsets to expect a positive response rather than a negative one. Besides, planning a few talking points
ahead of time before a discussion or conversation can be helpful. Another strategy is that shy people
should recognize that when a conversation goes poorly, the responsibility sometimes lies with their
conversation partner. For example, a conversation might turn awkward because of speakers` attitude
problems, private discussion topics, or incompatible personalities of two speakers.

Read the text below and answer questions 24-34.

WHY DO WE LOVE OUR PETS SO MUCH?

Four chimpanzees captured a young blue duiker to play with. You might at first think that they
wanted to keep it as a pet. However, the picture changed after awhile. The chimpanzees’ playful
behaviours were too rough that they killed the duiker. They continued playing with the corpse for
another 30 minutes and then left it under the tree after they grew bored with it.

As you can see in the scenario above, animals do not keep pets. You won’t see a chimpanzee taking
a dog for a walk or an elephant keeping a tortoise for company. Only humans make an animal part of
their families. Why is it so?

For several decades, there was a prevailing view that pets provided health benefits such as
increased psychological well-being and could even make people live longer. However, this view has been
contentious. Some research has shown that while pets do increase some aspects of health, they do
more harm than good. There are many diseases associated with pets such as rabies, psittacosis and
giardiasis.

Besides a cross-cultural analysis of 60 countries found that different cultures treat pets differently.
The anthropologist Jared Diamond observed that some cultures that keep animals treat them cruelly.
For example, Kiembu tribe in Kenya only keeps dogs for protection. Dogs have never been a part of
their families. They do not even have a word “pet” in their language and their dogs are never cuddled or
allowed inside their houses.
Harold Herzog of Western Carolina University says that the differences in attitudes towards pets
are purely cultural. For instance a puppy that is considered cute in the US and the UK can be perceived
as a delicious meal in the countries such as South Korea, China, Vietnam, Nigeria, Switzerland and
Indonesia.

In conclusion, it is difficult to pinpoint exactly why humans keep pets. However, Harold Herzog
believes that pet-keeping is a cultural tradition among human societies for a number of purposes such
as companion, protection and food.
