TASK: SHIPPING ACTIVITIES AND SOCIETAL ENVIRONMENT
UNIT CODE: GROUP MEMBERS: ANDREW MWINGA DMTL/2021/75514 MUFFADAL DMTL/2021/72723 PETER DMTL/2021/70259 TASK ONE: MEANING OF SOCIAL CULTURAL ENVIRONMENT IN SHIPPING Social cultural environment refers to trends and developments in changes in attributes, behavior and values in the the society. It is closely related to population, lifestyle, culture, tastes, customs and traditions. It’s a public process of analyzing and allocating the spatial and temporal distribution of human activities in shipping areas to achieve ecological, economic and social objectives that have been specified through apolitical process.
TASK TWO: EFFECTS OF SHIPPING ACTIVITIES ON THE SOCIETY
There are various ways in which shipping affects the society. These effects outlined have been divided into three categories: economic, social and environmental. ECONOMIC Shipping activities such as international trade has contributed largely towards the economic status of many countries and societies, among these. 1. Source of employment – shipping activities has created job opportunities for many people. This includes logistics related occupations, supply chain managers, truck drivers and many more. 2. Promotion of entrepreneurship- shipping activities has opened opportunities for people to invest and growth of small- and large-scale business that deal in shipping products. 3. Profitability – through shipping countries that have resources to produce commodities in plenty, it has enabled them to export them out of the country and this has resulted to profits and gains to the producing/ exporting country. 4. Economic growth – the economy of any country largely depends on the level of trade and shipping activities it is involved in, thus the more the shipping the more the economy grows. SOCIAL i. Creation and building of friendly relations – shipping activities have brought about friendly ties with neighboring and foreign societies through trade. ii. Mental health and wellbeing – shipping activities have led to an increase in mental illness and irritation derived from traffic in roads, this has led to an increase in aggression as witnessed in many traffic zones. iii. Noise- Noise coming from road traffic and other means of shipping has led to an increase in impaired communication, disturbed sleep, annoyance and hearing impairment. iv. Cultural influence – shipping activities has brought both erosion of culture and and sharing of cultural practices and lifestyles from other societies. ENVIRONMENTAL Shipping activities have resulted and caused environmental effect on the society. i. Transport accidents and injuries – shipping activities have led to an increase in accidents deriving from transport means and at times lead to the death. ii. Health Impact – shipping activities have led to air pollution generated from emissions from trucks especially in traffic. iii. Marine life – Oil spill and illegal disposal of waste by ships at sea have caused great suffering to the marine life.to the societies that depend on fishing receive the greatest negative impact. Ships also cause sound pollution at sea and this may interrupt the normal behaviors of animals at sea. iv. Climate change – in the aims to expand shipping activities it has led to cutting down of trees and destruction of vegetation and large-scale emissions of co2 gas in the air that has resulted to global warming. SUSTAINABLE SHIPPING INITIATIVIES Shipping must take place with regards to the society’s demands of the society, economic status and environmental factors. For this to happen a number of initiatives have been been put in place to ensure that shipping is conducted in the most efficient, safe and positive manner. The shipping system should be able to: i. promote social and economic inclusion ii. facilitate economic prosperity iii. actively contribute to environmental sustainability iv. provide for the effective integration of transport and land use v. facilitate efficient, coordinated and reliable movement vi. be safe and support health and wellbeing. THEY INCLUDE: i. Use of renewable sources of energy such as solar during shipping to reduces gas emissions. ii. Regulating the behaviors of ships in regards to sea life while they are sailing. This has been made possible by maritime bodies such as the international maritime authority that manages ships activities during shipping at sea. iii. Implementation of health and safety measures to curb the rate and occurrences of accidents during shipping especially during transport, loading and offloading of shipment in ports and terminals. iv. Insulation of buildings using specific roofs and windows to curb noise pollution from traffic. v. monitor the health consequences of current trans port modes and policies at the local, country and interna onal levels as part of health and environ ment informa on system vi. make adjustments concerning transport infrastructure and urban development that take appropriate ate account of the health implica ons. vii. Shipping has to be conducted in the most cost friendly manner, this is to ensure that the transporters and shippers get profits from the shipping business.in this manner a country or society is able to boost its economy, viii. Optimize routes to reduce fossil fuel and consumption, by choosing fuel efficient vehicles. ix. Efficient supply and demand planning to reduce overproduction. x. Introduce transparency to ensure suppliers are using ethical sources.
