5 11kV Heat Shrinkable Cable Joints

5.1 General
Electrical stress control for cable insulation screen in XLPE cable joints shall be achieved by heat shrink
tubing and stress grading mastic. This tubing and mastic shall have defined electrical characteristic,
volume resistivity and dielectric constant in accordance with the latest version of IEC 62631-3-1, IEC
62631-3-2 and IEC 62631-2-1.

In PILC cable joints, the electrical stress control shall be achieved using stress control heat shrink tubing
over the peeled prepared cores and by the insertion of high di-electric strength insulating materialat
cable crotch sealed with conductive breakout over the conductor phase connector such that electrical
discharge activity does not occur in the joint after it has been energized at its rated voltage.

The sealant shall be pre-coated inside the Heat Shrinkable components and activated by the Heat
applied, to shrink the components, which shall be in excess of 125°C or applied in tape form.

Uniform adhesive flow from the adhesive Heat Shrink component onto the adjoining surfaces will be
used as an indicator that shrinking is complete, and therefore, the adhesive must be suitable for this
purpose.

The joints shall be designed manufactured and tested to meet the requirements of latest version of IEC
60502 and other relevant standards listed in Section 2 of this specification. Joints must be insensitive
to cable manufacturers tolerances allowed under IEC 60502.

The installed cable joints shall meet the electrical ‘System Parameters’ stated in Clause 3 and, the
‘Environmental Conditions’ stated in Clause 4 of this specification.

The continuous current rating and short circuit fault ratings of the joint shall be in accordance with the
appropriate cable specification.

All completed 11kV joints must have a certified fault withstand rating and earth fault withstand rating.
The certificates shall have been issued by an independent test authority and the method of test shall be
defined.

Components or materials (including but not limited to Pre-moulded and heat shrinkable tubes/sleeves)
shall have no shelf life limitation and no special storage condition in given temperature limits.

Non-metallic parts (grease, solvents, mastic tapes, etc) shall be with defined shelf life with no less than
3 years from the date of delivery.

The validity of specific item which is not in line with the general expiry date of the complete kit shall
be mentioned separately over the item's packing itself (like any liquid, gel, tape etc.). The validity must
be in line with environmental conditions or otherwise specified.
