Phase equilibria and magnetic properties in the Yb-Pd-In system

INTRODUCTION
Yb containing intermetallic compounds, exhibit unusual electronic and
magnetic effects, for example superconductivity, intermediate valence, ➢ Around forty samples prepared and
heavy fermion (HF) behavior, Kondo effect and quantum phase transitions characterized in Yb-Pd-In system
[1], because of the hybridization between f orbital electrons of Yb and ➢ Two new ternary compounds (τ7
Pd(In,Yb) and τ8) discovered
conduction electrons of transition or p-block elements. Moreover, the high
vapor pressure of Yb, responsible for difficult preparation of its alloys, might ➢ Liquid phase in indium rich region

The main motivation for studying the Yb-Pd-In system is derived from above phases in ternary system except
two factors and the interesting physical properties which have been for InPd
observed in the compounds Yb2Pd2In [2,3] and YbPd2In (specific heat jump at ➢ Extended solid solubility line
T ≈ 250 mK and increase in magnetic entropy at high temperature by Backscattered electron image (BSE) of ranging from InPd to YbPd2In

intermetallic compounds having interesting properties. Pd(In, Yb). From the fitting, value of a = 3.3067 Å

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

➢ Fitting of inverse susceptibility curve for YbPdIn4


➢Going from YbPd2In (ordered Heusler, Cu2MnAl type) to InPd ➢ μeff = 0.87 μB/at.Yb
(bcc, CsCl type) disorder occurs in 4b Wyckoff site of sp.gr. F 4 - ➢ Yb atom in divalent state
