developed.(Ev-critiquing)
B8.11 apply the knowledge of use of various transition metals in medicine, biological phenomena, storage,
comfortable living, industries and agriculture.(Ap-executive)

Teaching Learning Process:

 Introductory activity: Students have previous knowledge of classification of elements into s, p, d and f
blocks and have learnt about various aspects related to s and p block elements. They also know about
certain characteristics of the d and f block elements on the basis of their studies of the same in class XI
(Chapter-Periodic Properties). Keeping this in mind a discussion led by the following questions will be
held:
- What is periodic position of d and f block elements?
- Why, d block elements are known as transition elements and f block elements as inner transition elements?
- Why do these elements show transition in their properties?
Based on their responses further explanation will be given. The discussion as above will be helpful students
develop their thinking and reasoning skills and they will be able to correlate & differentiate between
characteristics of various elements.

 Teacher’s Activity: Teacher will explain the cause of transition and actual definition of the transition &
inner transition elements. Teacher will then discuss about the properties of elements in detail. The
discussion will lead to develop the concepts regarding the following questions:
(i) General configuration of d and f block elements and the reason why they are known as transition & inner
transition elements respectively.
(ii) Why Zn, Cd and Hg are not regarded as transition elements?
(iii) Why do transition elements show various trends in their atomic and physical properties e.g. Size, metallic
nature, ionisation enthalpy, atomization enthalpy, electrode potential etc.
(iv) Specific reasons as to why do transition elements in their compounds exhibit:
(a) variable oxidation states (b) magnetic behavior (c) catalytic nature (d) complex formation (e)
formation of alloys and Interstitial compounds etc.
(v) Lanthanoid Contraction – Its cause and consequences
(vi) Comparative features of Lanthanoids and Actinoids

 Students’ Activity:
Ac8.1 Group Discussion: Students will follow a group discussion based on above properties of d and f block
elements. The discussion in peer group will be able to develop their reasoning & thinking skills, collaboration &
communication and confidence. Teacher can intervene wherever required. (An,Ev-organizing, critiquing)
Ac8.2 Problem Solving: Students will be asked to solve a work sheet based on above concepts which later on will
be solved in class.

 Teacher’s Activity: Teacher will discuss the following about K2Cr2O7 and KMnO4 in class:
(i) Structure
(ii) Methods of Preparation
(iii) Physical and Chemical Properties including their oxidizing action
 Students’ Activity: Students will solve practice questions and problems based identification and
characterization of above compounds.

 Lab. Activity:

Teacher will demonstrate and the students will perform the following identifying tests (chemical reactions)
under qualitative analysis to study the properties of the compounds.

(i) Chromyl chloride test

(ii) Nesseler’s reagent test
(iii) Salt analysis for detection of Mn2+, Zn2+, Cr3+, Co2+, Ni2+ etc. ions
