TLOR
A study investigated the effects of cyclopiazonic acid (CPA) on the male
reproductive system in mice. The highest dose of CPA led to significant
reductions in Leydig and Sertoli cells, seminiferous tubule diameter, and
spermatogenesis parameters. CPA exposure also resulted in increased
oxidative stress, apoptosis, and altered expression of apoptotic genes. These
findings suggest that CPA has detrimental effects on the testicles and may
pose a risk factor for male-related infertility.
Bullet points
Effects of Cyclopiazonic acid (CPA) on male reproductive system
* CPAis an indole tetrameric acid mycotoxin
* Study involved 40 adult male mice divided into five groups
* Control group was not exposed to CPA
* Vehicle-received group received CPA-solvent (0.05% dimethyl sulfoxide)
* Third, fourth, and fifth groups received CPA at varying doses for 28 daysEffects observed
* Reduction in the Leydig and Sertoli cells population, diameter of
seminiferous tubules, and spermatogenesis parameters, only at highest
CPA dose
* Increase in MDA, NO, and CO levels in testicular tissue
* Reduction of TAC and TTM levels in CPA-exposed groups
* Up-regulation of P53 and Caspase Ill genes, down-regulation of Bcl-2
gene in CPA-received groups
Conclusion
* CPAhas detrimental effects on testicles
* Effects may be due to CPA-induced oxidative stress and apoptosis
* Raises concerns about CPA as a potential risk factor for male-related
infertility
