CHAPTER 5: THE BILLING PROCESS
BILLING PROCESS
● It is important that the patient understands the
purpose and cost of any proposed treatment
and procedures before acceptance as stated in
the Bill of Magna Carta of patients rights and
obligations act of 2017. In doing so, the patient
is assured that the charges (tests, utilities,
professional fees, etc) reflected in the hospital
billing is complete and accurate.
● Processing the bill should also involve:
○ Authorization
○ Certification
○ Medical record documentation
○ Coding
○ Participating provider agreements
○ various payer guidelines
○ Different reimbursement systems.
● When using a hospital information system such
as BizBox HIS 8.0, a Statement of Account (SOA)
can be generated for review and approval. Any
discount and/or refund may be applied or
unpaid balances can aso be included.
STATEMENT OF ACCOUNT (SOA)
● The Statement of Account (SOA) reflects the
charges for the room and bed, dispensed
medicine, medical supplies, use of equipment
and apparatus, laboratory examinations,
medical procedures, and professional fees, etc.
● In addition, this may also include discounts,
refunds and unpaid balances if applicable.
DISCOUNTS AND MEDICAL PACKAGES
● Special pricing for medical package(s) is availed
by selecting the appropriate package availed by
the patient.
● Additional discounts for Senior Citizen (SC),
People with Disability (PWD), Philhealth
eligibility and outright deduction can also be
applied before generating the Statement of
Account.
COLLECTION – CASHIERING
● The patient can settle their balance reflected in
their Statement of Account (SOA) by paying
cash, issuing a check or charging the balance to
their credit card.
● They also have the option to deposit payments
even if they are not yet charged.
● The cashier generates a Daily Cashier Collection
Report to summarize payments received from
patients during the day.
CHAPTER SUMMARY
● When using a hospital information system such

● The patient proceeds to the cashier to settle the
amount due which maybe in the form of cash,
check, or credit.
