bonost is the Kingdom of Kanday’s
easternmost outpost and serves as a
main entry point for goods coming from
the east via the Salt Route. Of sentimental
importance to the House of Kand, it is a favorite
summer residence of King Andasin IV. It is
governed by a constable, Sir Burdas of Kandry,
a distant relative to the king.

HISTORY
The region in and around Ibonost has been
occupied for 1500 years by the Gozyda tribe. In
497, Corani Emperor Mindrithar ordered the
fortress built as part of his expansion up the Teb
River. Combined with Moleryn, Ibonost
effectively cut off the Gozyda on the western
side of the Teb. A vigorous suppression
campaign forced the Gozyda to withdraw to the
south and east. However, before the conquered
land could be developed, the Balshan Jihad
intervened.

Ibonost fell to the Jihad in 566 and was ruled
for 20 years by Clote of Tekhos, a relative of
Horahnam. Clote acted as a repressive governor,
not nearly as interested in religious fervor so
much as personal profit. Religious observances
were used as a threat to extort money and
property from the residents of the nearby
manors. Several half hearted attempts to
exterminate the forces of Andasin of Kand were
made from Ibonost and Edino, without success.
When the Theocracy collapsed in 588,
Andasin marshaled his forces and took Ibonost
in a quick assault in the first month of 589. He
proclaimed the kingdom of Kanday with himself
as king, and built his small kingdom’s strength
for a decade before retaking his ancestral home
of Edino and expanding from there.
In 661, the Thardic League conquered
Moleryn and the Five Year War began. After
two years of skirmishes, a League army worked
its way into the Teb marshes and pillaged the
manors on the east bank. The Kandian forces,
along with most of the Ibonost garrison, set off
into the marshes where they were trapped and
defeated. Ibonost keep was besieged and quickly
surrendered. The keep was returned to Kanday
in 666 as part of the Treaty of Quivum.
GOVERNMENT
The constable of Ibonost, Sir Burdas of
Kandry, takes a close interest in the day to day
running of Ibonost Keep, with an emphasis on
maintenance and upkeep. He is particularly
insistent on regular drills for the militia and
annual mustering of the feudal levy. While
scutage is accepted, Sir Burdas has made it clear
that he would strongly prefer to see knights and
yeomen. In addition, Sir Burdas has brought a
journeyman mason in every year to inspect and
repair the fortifications in addition to the
inspections done by the Royal Mason. He has
also been careful to keep the area around the
keep as free from obstruction as possible, thus
providing his archers with a clear field of fire.

Sir Burdas is advised in economic matters
by the guild council consisting of Robyn of
Hiatt [5], Fryd of Welter [7] and Nelson of Heed
[12]. The conduct and quality of work done by
the weaponcrafter, Alan of Fesher is currently a
sore point. Sir Burdas would like to get much of
his armory replaced or repaired, but doesn’t
trust Alan to do the job correctly.
While foreign policy is primarily a function
of the crown, Ibonost’s isolated location means
that Sir Burdas takes more interest in the
activities of his neighbors than other lords. He
maintains a payroll of informers in Moleryn and
Coranan to keep him up to date on the latest
news from the Thardic Republic. The garrison
always has at least one rider ready to take
important news to Dyrisa.
With respect to the Gozyda, the policy of the
crown and Sir Burdas is effectively in
agreement. King Andasin IV has sworn upon his
coronation that the Mimea hills will remain
Gozyda lands following the decree laid down by
Andasin I. However, the king regards the
Gozyda with some indifference, having graver
problems on his borders to the north. Sir Burdas
shares this opinion, and while he would prefer
the Gozyda convert to worship of Larani and
Peoni, he takes no actions to either encourage or
dissuade missionary work.
ECONOMICS
Ibonost is economically closer to Moleryn
and the Thardic Republic than it is to the rest of
Kanday. Local goods and surplus are frequently
sent to Moleryn and Coranan rather than
overland to Dyrisa. Bribes to certain members
of the Moleryn legion assure minimal taxes on
this business.
When the king is in residence, the assorted
royal petitioners provide a steady stream of
income for local businesses. The commons have
been known to become a veritable tent city with
assorted bureaucrats, petitioners and
functionaries.

The next morning, Sir Burdas begins to drill
with the feudal levy. The drills continue for up
to five days finishing with a mock battle against
the Laranian knights of Lebenil.

3. CHAPEL OF PEONI
This chapel devoted to the local peasants is
run by four priestesses. They are somewhat
irritated at the increasingly military
composition of the spring festival of Peoni,
but are largely ignored by Sir Burdas. They
also maintain a small hospital (a).
4. MILLER (Mikkel of Sahd)
Size: 4 Quality: Prices: Low
The local mill produces a rather coarse flour
due to the age of the millstone.
5. HIDEWORKER (Robyn of Hiatt)
Size: 5 Quality: Prices: Average
Robyn deals mainly with local trappers and
Gozyda traders. He is a member of the guild
council that advises the constable.
6. LEXIGRAPHER (Keneth of Klaen)
Size: 5 Quality: Prices: Average
Keneth has striven to make the whitest paper
he can with some success. Unfortunately,
this success has come at the expense of
durability. While the scribes of the Teba
Hundred are not thrilled with this
development, visiting young nobles value
the paper for writing love letters.
7. METALSMITH (Fryd of Welter)

Recently elected to the guild council to re-
place Ronyld [17], Fryd is a respected, but
uninspiring craftsman.
8. POTTER (Tomas of Slabe)

Tomas is actually a quite ordinary potter.
His wife Lynda, however, has an
exceptional flair for glaze work that makes
Tomas’ ordinary pottery special. Lynda,
mother of six children, has suggested
charging more, especially from nobles when
the king is in residence, but Tomas is
reluctant to offend his customers.

9. WOODCRAFTER (Ruden of Pecarn)
Size: 3 Quality: Prices: Average
Ruden’s work and structures are sound, but
his woodcarving and decorative work are
poor at best.
10. TENTMAKER (Ramos of Zoll)
Size: 5 Quality: Prices: Low
Ramos does a brisk business repairing and
selling tents to travelers. He is an extremely
busy man when the king is in residence.
11. JEWELER (Morys of Mixon)
Size: 3 Quality: Prices: Average
Morys provides repair work and expensive
last minute gifts for visiting nobles. His in-
come is highly dependent on the length of
the king’s stay each year.
12. SALTER (Nelson of Heed)
Size: 9 Quality: Prices: High
Nelson specializes in smoked sausages and
meats using spices imported from Lythia. He
has made arrangements with Ronyld [17] to
finance a trip for his son to acquire spices in
Kerejia. Nelson is also a member of the
guild council.
13. TIMBERWRIGHT (Kevyn of Vachon)
Size: 3 Quality: Prices: Average
Kevyn is a shy man who spends all his time
at the various manors of the Teba Hundred
clearing trees and floating them downstream
to Moleryn with his two assistants.
14. CHARCOALER (Kathen of Roch)
Size: 5 Quality: Prices: Average
Kathen is assisted by ‘retired’ freemaster
Joreg of Elas. Unbeknowest to Kathen,
Joreg is a Peleahn Shek P’var. Joreg is really
here to apprentice Garen of Slabe, who nom-
inally works as an apprentice to Kathen. The
apprenticeship was arranged by Garen’s
mother Lynda [8]. No one else in town
knows this, not even Garen’s father.
15. PERFUMER (Blain of Dobbin)
Size: 5 Quality: Prices: Low
Blain’s scents are actually just fine, but
nobles petitioning the king are looking for
exquisite scents from Shiran.

16. THE GARGOYLE (Keneth of Ogers)
Size: 4 Quality: Prices: Low
Ibonost’s only inn is, frankly, a sty. The beer
is weak, the stew is thin, and the bed linen
infested with lice. Veteran travelers stay in
their tents on the common or in the keep if
they have sufficient social standing.
17. USURER (Ronyld of Blackburn)
Size: 3 Quality: Prices: High
Ronyld specializes in financing caravans and
providing credit services to royal petitioners.
Ronyld was, until recently, a member of the
guild council, but his truly usurious rates
offended one too many noble, so Sir Burdas
is refusing him access to the keep.
18. PHYSICIAN (Richar of Loreng)
Size: 4 Quality: Prices: Low
A retired member of the Order of the Check-
ered Shield, Richar provides low cost care to
locals and travelers alike. He is a caring
physician, who tries to tend to the spiritual
as well as physical needs of his patients.
19. WEAPONCRAFTER (Alan of Fesher)
Size: 4 Quality: Prices: Low
Alan is an alcoholic bordering on a complete
breakdown. His apprentice tries to handle
most of the work, but hasn’t the necessary
skills to produce quality edges. Sir Burdas
has appealed to the weaponcrafter’s guild to
revoke Alan’s license, but thus far no action
has been taken.
20. CHANDLER (Raymond of Vega)
Size: 4 Quality: Prices: Average
Raymond is in his 70s and continues to
make candles for use throughout the Teba
Hundred. The Laranian manor of Venric is
his best customer.
21. SHAMAN (Lucas of Vos)
Lucas is an old Gozyda shaman. Old leg
wounds have made it difficult for him to get
around, so he has taken up residence here.
He mostly acts as a broker for deals between
Ibonost villagers and the local Gozyda
tribesmen, including captured Thardic
officers which are occasionally ransomed by
the constable. He also provides religious
services for nearby tribesmen.

22. MINER (Arman of Oxlade)
The residence of guildmaster Arman of
Oxlade. Arman is usually tending to
business in one of the nearby mines.
23. SAGE (Paol of Uladar)
Paol is a priest of Save K’nor, mastering the
field of economics. Paol has received per-
mission from the king to conduct a thorough
accounting of all goods traveling the road
between Moleryn and Dyrisa. As such, tariff
collection in Ibonost is among the most ac-
curate on Harn. What isn’t known is that
Paol is not just an academic, but also the
guildmaster of the local Lia Kavair. Having
good information on the goods traveling,
Paol arranges for the local bandits to be
equipped with the information needed to
choose the most valuable targets (see Ban-
dits of Dyrisa Road, page 12).
24. EMBALMER (Josep of Dewlan)
Size: 4 Quality:  Prices: Average
Josep is a steadfast Peonian who frequently
quarrels with the Laranian clergy and faith-
ful about the proper preparation and respect
for the dead. This tendency does not make
for good relations with his wealthiest cus-
tomers.
25. KING'S LODGE
The summer residence of King Andasin IV
of Kanday. The residence is maintained by
a royal huntsman and is regularly checked
on by Sir Burdas' men and the Order of the
Checkered Shield during the rest of the year.
The lodge includes a stable (a) for the king's
horse and a small chapel to Larani (b). It is
rumored that this chapel stands atop the
Kand family crypt and that is why Queen
Arelora ensured the return of Ibonost to
Kanday in the Treaty of Quivum.

Three Barrows Hill
The three barrows hill is a tribal burial
mound to the north of the King's Falls. Local
legend has it that the mounds contain the
remains of a Corani force sent south to scout
against the Gozyda during the reign of Emperor
Laketta. The commander, whose name is
forgotten, was a victim of treachery among the
Corani officials. His position was left isolated
while the Gozyda were bribed to destroy the
contingent. They are reputed to have made their
last stand on the hill, and were buried there by
the Gozyda after the massacre. In general, the
hill is ignored by the residents of Ibonost.
IBONOST KEEP
Ibonost Keep is built on a rocky outcrop
overlooking the King's Falls where the Little
Gos creek enters the Teb river.
The keep is garrisoned by 8 light footmen, 2
medium footmen, 2 bowmen and 4 light
horsemen commanded by Sir Nikad of
Porsadyn. These are supplemented by yeomen
from Teba Hundred as part of their feudal
service. In addition, the troops of the nearby
Lebenil chapter house of the Order of the
Checkered Shield add to the garrison when the
king is in residence.

Ground Floor
1. STRONGROOM: The keep’s cellar is rather
damp due to an ongoing seepage problem
from the cistern. Last spring this seepage
caused the door to the strongroom to swell
shut. Sir Burdas was forced to have the door
broken down for the spring militia drills.
The door was replaced with a looser door,
but the lock is ill fitting as a result. In
addition, the seepage causes the weapons in
the armory to decay and Sir Burdas needs to
replace many of them. The secret room at
the back contains the rotted trunks with
monies and other valuables of the Corani
legion that garrisoned the keep when it fell
to the Balshan jihad. The documents have all
rotted to worthlessness and most of the coins
are black with corrosion.
2. GAOL: The gaol contains three rusty cells
that would not hold determined prisoners.
The nearby table is actually a rack made
much less ominous by the stack of crates
atop it.
3. CISTERN: The cistern takes in rain water
from the roof. It seeps quite a bit after
heavy rains rotting anything left on the
floors of the adjacent rooms.
4. STORAGE CELLAR: This area is only ac-
cessible via a trap door in the great hall
above. Spoilage is a continuing problem and
much is hung from the ceiling to keep it
away from the damp floor. However, the
area has proved to be an excellent environ-
ment for wine storage. Some of the Lythian
wines stored here in oaken casks have aged
exceptionally well, and are now quite re-
markable quality.

First Floor
1. GREAT HALL: The great hall is lit by
windows high on the walls, as well as
numerous torches. Two fireplaces provide
heat in the winter, and adequate space to
roast game during great feasts. The
balconies are occupied by noble ladies and
harpers during such feasts.
2. KITCHEN: Most of the meals for keep
occupants are prepared here. The adjoining
room is normally occupied by Sir Burdas’
cook, alewife, gardener and a footman. The
area above the cistern is used for storage of
various goods. Water is drawn out from a
trap door in the southeast corner.
3. BARRACKS: The keep's garrison resides in
these two rooms. Formerly a place of crude
language and rude humor, Lady Nacy has
insisted on a level of decorum that has
caused a certain lingering resentment among
the men of the garrison.

Second Floor
1. CHAPEL: The keep’s chapel to Larani is
well appointed with tapestries, a statue of
the Lady Paladin and an expensive stained
glass window. Sir Burdas and his wife
attend the daily sermons and attend services
at the temple on the holy days. Attendance
by the garrison is encouraged. The room to
the south is inhabited by the keep’s chaplain
and Sir Burdas’ squire.
2. CAPTAIN’S QUARTERS: This pleasant
room is the residence of the garrison’s
captain, Sir Nikad of Porsadyn and Sir
Burdas’ huntsman, Sir Paol of Lenater. The
balcony to the south is where minstrels play
during feasts.
3. STAFF QUARTERS: This room is occupied
by Sir Burdas’ chamberlain, ostler, and
harper.
4. GUEST CHAMBER: A guest room for im-
portant visitors to the keep. The lady's bal-
cony is to the south.

Third Floor
1. CONSTABLE’S QUARTERS: This
sparsely appointed room is the residence of
Sir Burdas and his wife, Lady Nacy. The
room to the north houses Lady Nacy’s
dressmaker and maid. The numerous trunks
contain a substantial amount of valuable
cloth.
2. COUNCIL CHAMBER: This area is used
by the Constable for meetings with his advi-
sors. The king also uses this area for private
audiences when he is in residence.
Sir Burdas of Kandry
Sir Burdas Kandry, 40, is the present
constable of Ibonost Keep, having succeeded his
father to the position as a young man of 23. As
constable of Ibonost, Sir Burdas is an important
and influential noble. A shrewd politician, he
makes the most of the King’s summer stays in
Ibonost. Sir Burdas’ influence is reflected in
several ways, most notably Andasin IV’s
concern about the expansionist designs of the
Thardic Republic and Marshal Kronas.

Sir Burdas is a devout Laranian and takes
his duties as constable very seriously. He has
worked steadily for the past 8 years to improve
the defenses of Ibonost. In addition, he has
donated considerable sums to the Order of the
Checkered Shield in Lebenil, allowing it to
maintain a full complement of knights and
soldiers, many of them veterans of the
skirmishes with the Copper Hook.
Sir Burdas is married to Lady Nacy, a retired
member of the Order of the Checkered Shield,
now pregnant with their first child. Sir Burdas’
first wife, Lady Vanessa, was also a retired
member of the Order who was severely
wounded in a skirmish at the end of Ezar’s War.
She died of consumption in 714 after bearing Sir
Burdas two children, both of whom died in
infancy. Understandably, Sir Burdas is both
delighted and anxious about Lady Nacy’s
pregnancy.

CLANS of TEBA HUNDRED
Kandry
The head of clan Kandry is Sir Burdas. The
Kandry clan is a branch of the House of Kand –
Sir Burdas’ great great grandfather was Andasin
I’s cousin. As such, Sir Burdas is considered by
some to be third in line to the throne, after
Prince Anaflas and Princess Eriel Milaka. This
is a claim Sir Burdas does not give much cre-
dence to since the King and his siblings are
young and in good health.

Sir Burdas’ father was killed sixteen years
ago when he was thown from his horse. His
mother, Lady Anna, is still hale at 65 and
manages Clerdy manor. His uncle, Haver
Kandry, manages Pymint manor. Stymon manor
is managed by Sir Geoff of Fandael, though Sir
Burdas intends to turn it over to his brother
Mikel when he is knighted. Sir Burdas' sister,
Lady Fallona, is married to Sir Leon Izvenna, a
vassal to the Baron of Sepire. She has a 10 year
old daughter and 3 sons under 5. Sir Burdas’
cousin Marsha is to wed Elmor of Pasyna, son
of an alderman of Aleath, this spring.

Sir Burdas’ younger brother Mikel was born
8 months after his father’s death. This,
combined with the fact that Sir Burdas’ mother
was 49 when she gave birth has led to whispers
that Lady Anna was having an affair with a
demon or worse. Mikel is currently a squire at
Holdir manor. Thus far, he has been a
reasonably normal lad, but any unusual
occurrences will be attributed by some to the
Mikel’s otherworldly nature.
Fandael
The head of clan Fandael is Sir Gerald, a 32
year old knight. Sir Gerald traces his
relationship to the Fandael clan through his
mother’s side, but has only been elected clan
head within the last year. Prior to Sir Gerald’s
ascendance, his septuagenarian Aunt Agnes had
been clanhead. Agnes has managed the clan fief
of Byndu for over 40 years, but with her failing
knees and Sir Gerald’s father, Sir Nicolas, also
in failing health, she decided to pass the fief to
Sir Gerald last year. Sir Gerald still retains his
Aunt Agnes as his chamberlain to handle the
day to day running of the fief, which holds little
interest for him.
Sir Gerald is married and has a 9 month old
son. In addition to his aunt, Sir Gerald supports
his mother, dying father and youngest brother.
His brother, Sir Geoff, serves the Kandry clan as
bailiff of Stymon manor, while another brother,
Bonal, squires at Udel manor. With such a large
family, money is hard to come by and Sir
Gerald has recently had to sell his father’s
warhorse to meet some unexpected expenses.
Gedela
Sir Julan of Gedela is the aging head of the
Gedela clan. Never large, there are now only
three members of clan Gedela, Sir Julan, his
wife Megan, and his adopted son Muray. Muray
was adopted from an orphanage near Dyrisa
when it became clear that Sir Julan would sire
no heirs. Sir Julan has not told Muray he was
adopted, though it is well known throughout the
Teba Hundred.

BOREN MANOR
Boren Manor is in a unique situation, being
actually two separate holdings in the same
location. The manor is managed by Sir Alben of
Lakin for the Constable of Ibonost and Sir Sid
of Mier for the Sheriff of Daen. The dual
holding was created during the assault on Hebon
in 690. The previous bailiff was killed in an
early assault, and after the keep was taken, both
Sir Alben (backed by the Constable of Ibonost)
and Sir Sid (backed by the Sheriff of Daen)
claimed Andasin III had promised the manor to
them for their actions.
Both knights had witnesses, and none could
say what Andasin III’s intent was in the matter.
After years of war and acrimonious argument,
Queen Mirelael finally decreed that Boren
manor would be a dual holding in 698. The
manor would be expanded and both knights
would have a life interest. That is, they would
run the manor so long as they should live, but
would not pass to their heirs. When one dies, the
other will hold the entire manor so long as he
should live, whereupon the holding would revert
to the crown for disposition.
This situation has led to considerable
animosity between the two knights, who have
effectively divided the holding between
themselves. Disputes are frequent and an
ongoing problem. Both Sir Burdas and the
Sheriff of Edino try keep these problems to a
minimum, but one or two each year need to be
brought to the king’s attention.
The latest problem is the matter of a new
woodcrafter for the holding. The last
woodcrafter left for Byndu manor because of the
difficult working environment. The
woodcrafter’s guild is insisting that all rents and
fees be paid to only one knight to avoid putting
their freemaster in the middle of the dispute.

AUTHOR'S NOTES
The original version of Ibonost, my first
Hârn article, was released before Columbia
Games released the Electronic Atlas of the
Kingdom of Kanday. This was somewhat
unfortunate for me in that an article that I felt
was a great success was rendered inconsistent
with canon since the local maps no longer
matched. The Electronic Atlas team kindly
numbered buildings in the village to match the
article I had written, but the keep was a near
complete mismatch.
Now, some years later, correcting this has
bubbled to the top of my list of things to do. I
have tried to create a new keep that reuses the
previous descriptions as much as possible. I
think I have achieved a certain level of success,
but I leave it to you to judge.
