GEDAN 1
G edan is a small village in northwest-
ern Kaldor administered by a reeve
on behalf of the Rekela of Nurez. It
lays less than a league northwest of Abriel
Abbey and serves to generate income for the
the Abbey.
Gedan lies at the intersection of three trails
leading north, east, and southwest respec-
tively. The trail leading north joins the trail
that connects Eldibrin and Cyre manors, and
from Cyre to the Fur Road. The trail leading
southwest leads to Dynes manor. The trail
going east joins the trail between Iversen
Chapterhouse and Abriel Abbey just north of
the Abbey.
Sitting due north of Nelafayn’s quarry, there
is no path fit for a wagon to the quarry from
the hamlet. Also, Gedan has no significant
waterways coursing through its lands. Lack-
ing traffic to and from the quarry, coupled
with the lack of waterway, Gedan sees little
traffic. The only traffic it sees are people
travelling to or from other local manors and
villages of Nelafayn Hundred.
HISTORY
T he Jarin first settled the area around
Olokand in 1000 BT. These early
settlers avoided most of the mayhem
following the Atani Wars and absorbed the

Settlements remained undocumented until 21
TR when Locar the Strong of the petty King-
dom of Olokand granted land on his realm’s
southern flank to various strongmen in ex-
change for their military support. Locar’s
kingdom did not survive his death in 38 TR
and war bands struggled to rule the region.
Gedan grew from the natural development
of the settlement of Nelafayn. As people
blazed trails across Nelafayn Hundred, an
intersection formed at what is now the Gedan
site. The exact date lost to the pages of history,
people started permanently raising crops at the
Gedan site sometime between Locar the
Strong’s death and the rise of Lothrim the
Foulspawner.
Lothrim’s Gargun scoured the Gedan site in
113 and a lieutenant ruled the remaining
inhabitants of Nelafayn from Olokand. After
Lothrim’s demise, Sanric I founded the King-
dom of Nurelia in 125 and rebuilt several small
villages, including Gedan. In 170, Sanric II
granted extensive lands to the Laranian church

based around the Abriel site. At 600 acres,
Gedan’s site was not big enough to support a
landed knight. Thus, Sanric II chose not to
grant it to one of his supporters, making Gedan
part of the donation to the Laranian church
instead. The relative peace of the next 65 years
allowed Gedan to slowly grow again.
Upon the death of Lotin the Gray while
battling the Taelda in 235, the majority of the
Nurelian barons convened an illegal Succes-
sion Council and voted the crown to Kalabin of
Kaldor. Gedan was razed by armies attacking
Olokand during the Olokand Baronial Revolt,
leaving the area largely depopulated. For the
remainder of the rule by the House of Tane
over Kaldor, a little over 100 years, people took
advantage of the peace and immigrated to the
village site of Gedan.
Then, with the death of Maranos of Tane,
Kaldor plunged into civil war. Because of
Gedan’s size and its lack of a strong enough
waterway to support a mill, and in spite of its
religious affiliation, plundering armies had no
compunction against picking Gedan clean time
and again as they tried to assert their claims
over the tin and salt mines to the west and
northwest.
For over 40 years, the Gedan site lay devoid
of life, slowly being reclaimed by the forest to
its south. The only people who used the
Gedan site during the 40+ years of the civil war
and the reign of the House of Orgael were
brigands who preyed upon the miners and
merchants who supplied the miners.
With the ascension of the House of Artane,
200 years of relative peace returned to Kaldor.
Abriel Abbey once again founded the village of
Gedan, which flourished. 200 years of peace
lulled the residents of Gedan into a false sense
of security. The people of Gedan were ill-
prepared for the 4 years of a succession crisis
following the death of Iemald of Artane.
Although Olokand was the nearest power
broker, western Nelafayn owed its allegiance

to the Baron of Setrew, who, in turn, owed his
allegiance to the Earl of Neph. Marauding
armies once again depopulated Gedan. The
crowning of Haldan I in 603 brought a new age
of peace to the Gedan area. For 117 years,
Gedan has slowly rebuilt.
Five years ago, Gedan was hit by a particu-
larly nasty form of influenza. Almost all of the
elderly died. About half of the children died.
While the active adults generally survived,
only because their bodies were fitter, they
experienced two weeks of extreme nausea,
diarrhea, and dizziness. Gedan’s midwife,
Myrinel of Dalgath (wife to Kethor the Reeve,
#2), eventually succumbed to the sickness as
well.
Upon Myrinel’s death, Rekela Ilor
personally asked Sir Bromis Yalgeth, lord of
Kaikefrin Manor, to send his manor’s Peonian
Ebasethe to Gedan to minister to the sick.
Ebasethe Ansyva had three characteristics that
made him an asset in this situation: first,
Ebasethe Ansyva had become an accomplished
physician during his seminary; second, he was
unafraid of working hard or dealing with the
sick; and third, Ebasethe Ansyva was a mem-
ber of the Dalgath clan who had purchased his
manumission to join the church of Peoni. The
Dalgaths were a prominent clan in Gedan, and
thus Ebasethe Ansyva had a familial interest at
stake in Gedan. Ebasethe Ansyva arrived just
in time to watch most of his cousins die, and
then had to bury them. He finished the min-
istrations started by Myrinel, and was able to
save most of the remaining villagers.
LOCAL AREA
N
elafayn Hundred is a rich commer-
cial center of agriculture and an
important part of Meselyneshire.
Wheat, barley, swine and small herds of cattle
are valuable and plentiful to the region. The
hundred is bordered to the east by the Kald

River, to the south by the Hemurin River and
to the north by the Caliprast Stream.
There are 33 villages in the hundred plus a
quarry, with a tin and a salt mine to the west.
The Church of Larani holds large tracts of land
under Abriel Abbey in the center of the hun-
dred. Other major landholders in Nelafayn are
the king, thru the Sheriff of Meselyneshire and
the Earls of Neph, Osel and Vemion thru
vassal lords.
Trails crisscross the hundred but the area
lies just off the kingdom’s major trade routes.
Many of the fiefs benefit from their nearness to
the castle town of Olokand. Its year-round
market, plus the Royal Chelebin Tournament
of Chivalry, adds a level of sophistication to
the area. Abriel Abbey is the site of the Hun-
dred Moot and the Rekela (Bishop) of Nurez is
also the Bailiff of the Hundred, who is the
crown’s representative and lieutenant to the
sheriff at Olokand.

Rekela Ilor Hadan despises his duties as
Bailiff of the Hundred and lord of Larani’s
lands in Nelafayn. Abriel’s Serolan (Abbot),
Lorald of Banadar, and an underling, Steward
Leradas of Elen, resolve manorial matters and
serve as the Rekela’s assistants. The Rekela’s
light hand on politics in Nelafayn suits the
sheriff. The Sheriff of Meselyneshire, Sir
Maldan Harabor, is the eldest illegitimate son
of King Miginath. Although unacknowledged
by his father, he still may be the most powerful
noble in the kingdom, and is most definitely
the most powerful noble associated with
Nelafayn.
Nelafayn Hundred’s most notable events
are: Olokand’s Royal Chelebin Tournament,
arrivals of the Orbaalese Fur Road caravans,
and the Feast of St. Ambrathas at Abriel
Abbey.

G edan consists of 600 acres. Of this,

132 are wooded, 234 are devoted to
crops, and 234 are left fallow and
used for pasture. Tenants hold 229 acres,
leaving 239 acres for the demesne lands. De-
mesne furlongs are separate from tenant fur-
longs, an arrangement the current beadle
encourages the reeve to strictly enforce so that
“proper emulation of the divine order is
maintained.”
Gedan farms a mixture of crops. Approx-
imately 10% of the acreage is dedicated to
vegetables, 20% is dedicated to rye, 20% is
dedicated to oats, 20% is dedicated to barley,
and 30% is dedicated to hay. The bulk of the
hay is reserved for the Laranian Melana at
Abriel and Iversen as part of Gedan’s feudal
obligations. There is no manorial orchard in
Gedan, although several of the villagers
maintain fruit and nut trees in their crofts their

Maranoth of Kelis (#11), the beadle and only
yeoman, has the largest farm in Gedan. At 60
acres, his holding easily doubles that of any
other tenant. As such, the Kelis clan operates
what is in effect a manor within a manor. I
have explained in detail his family’s holding in
the next few pages as an example of what a
tenant’s farm might look like.
Maranoth plants 3 acres with vegetables, 6
acres with rye, 6 acres with oats, 6 acres with
barley, and 9 acres with hay. The other 30
acres are left fallow alongside the other ten-
ants’ pasture acreage. The following table
illustrates the Kelis harvest for 720 barring any
serious problems:

Maranoth is a Veniken of the Lady of
Paladins, retiring after he earned the rank and
served as Sergeant of the Whyce Low Guard
for three consecutive years. Rekela Ilor has
disdain for Meken, the commonalty of the
Lady of Paladins. In spite of the Rekela’s
disdain, Maranoth maintains his fighting skills
he learned while in the Lady of Paladins so
that he may still be of use to Larani. As such,
he is considered a Medium Foot soldier who
also has archery skill in the short bow.
He used the loot from his various years in
the Lady of Paladins to purchase his own ring
hauberk, plate helm, spear, round shield, and
short bow. The broadsword he uses when
fulfilling his military obligations, Lightbringer,
was a gift from Sir Houla of Artona upon re-
tirement. The 936 d./year expenditure on his
household chart represents not only food and
clothing, but also the maintenance of his
equipment.
Henda, Maranoth’s wife, is in effect a
chamberlain. Thus, her expenditures of 800
d./year represent her physical needs of food
and clothing. It also represents the household
expenditures on such things as candles, re-
placement jars used for food storage, sealing
wax, maintaining and/or replacing the
cooking wares, maintaining and/or replacing
household and farming tools, etc.
Selerin is Maranoth’s mother, and after
having lived her life, is more than content with
using little of the household’s resources.
Henda acknowledges her mother-in-law’s
sacrifices for the Kelis clan, and appreciates
Selerin’s willingness to allow Henda to take

Maranoth has high hopes that his oldest son,
Forant (age 16), will continue the ancient tradi-
tion of the Kelis clan by serving Larani in the
Lady of Paladins, and has thus started training
him as a Light Foot soldier. It took the Kelis
clan six years to scrimp and save the funds
necessary to purchase Forant his quilt armor,
round shield, short sword, spear, and short
bow that he uses. In the household expenses
chart below, Forant uses the equivalent re-
sources of a light foot soldier.
Maranoth feels that Callon, his other son
(age 12), is still too young to train extensively
in fighting skills. Maranoth has introduced
him to the basic skills of swordplay, spear
thrusting, and archery, but Callon doesn’t
seem focused enough to train further. Callon
is, however, old enough to help on the farm.
Thus, Callon uses the equivalent resources of a
common laborer.
Maranoth maintains a horse, a Khanset
called Faithful, as both a palfrey and pack
animal. Although he doesn’t truly need the
animal, having Faithful grants him a certain

currently saving money toward the purchase
of Callon’s weapons and armor for his yeo-

edan, in and of itself, is unimportant.
As long as the income it generates
continues to flow to Abriel, Rekela
Ilor ignores it.
The banditry of Telin the Red is more than a
thorn in the side to the residents of Gedan.
Telin and his men plundered and burned one
of the outlying tofts to the ground two months
ago, murdering all the inhabitants. Telin and
his men didn’t make it back into the dark
before Maranoth and Forant were on them,
however.
Not having time enough to throw on his
ring hauberk, Maranoth nevertheless waded
into Telin’s men unarmored. Within the first
minute of joined combat, Maranoth had three
of the bandits on the ground from a spear
thrust, shield bash, and slice of Lightbringer.
Following him were arrows from Forant.
Although Forant missed every target he was
aiming for, “Telin” decided that retreating was
significantly safer. Before Maranoth broke off
pursuit, another two of Telin’s men lay on the
ground.

The people of Gedan and the Iversen force
that arrived an hour later hailed Maranoth and
Forant as heroes, but Maranoth wishes he had
been able to prevent the murders in the first
place. As a result of this wanton destruction,
and realizing that Gedan was truly unde-

defenses. Maranoth knows Rekela Ilor will
probably dismiss whatever proposals he puts
forth on principle, but he must at least try to
protect his people….
Maranoth and the villagers of Gedan know
a storm is brewing regarding the Succession
Crisis. As such, most extraneous expenditures
by the people of Gedan have ceased. They
now pour all their extra revenues into prepara-
tions for the various pillaging armies that will
eventually descend on them. Scattered
throughout Gedan are various hidden caches
of dried and/or salted foodstuffs, along with
additional seed caches.
Although everyone knows everyone else
hides foodstuffs, no family enquires of the
other families regarding their foodstuffs out of
politeness. There is a practical side to this non-
discussion as well. If you don’t know where
your neighbor is hiding his valuables, you
can’t be forced by brigands to tell where they
are. After Telin the Red’s raid, the Gedan
families have begun hiding their non-
agricultural valuables as well.

VILLAGE RESIDENTS
1. Villein (Haramin of Pinel)
Size: 7
Haramin is a good solid farmer whose family
is a touch too big to be supported by the num-
ber of acres he has. He relies on demesne work
provided by Kethor of Dalgath (#2), the reeve,
to supplement his family’s harvest. Hairy and
ugly, his wife has nevertheless borne him 5
children: a boy (12), a girl (10), a boy (9), a girl
(7), and a girl (6).
Haramin has a younger brother in Gedan:
Tarth (#9). As the eldest, Haramin is the Pinel
clan head. Although clan head, Haramin is
unable to help his little brother because of his
own impoverishment. Haramin’s and Tarth’s
parents died from the influenza outbreak 5
years ago.
2. Villein/Reeve (Kethor of Dalgath)
Size: 4
Kethor is the reeve. Although he is not the best
farmer in the hamlet, he is the most sociable of
all the hamlet residents. He fully understands
that the agreement between him, the Serolan of
Abriel, and Maranoth of Kelis (#11) could end
at any moment. As such, he works hard with

pleased with their hamlet’s production.
A devout Peonian, he sees to it that the
families lacking enough acreage to support
themselves get additional work opportunities
on the demesne farm. Kethor’s 12-year-old
brother, 10-year-old daughter, and 7-year-old
sister all reside with him. Kethor’s parents and
wife died from the influenza outbreak 5 years
ago.
3. Cottar (Tersil of Broatch)
Size: 3
Tersil is employed full time by the Kelis clan as
a farmhand. He inherited the toft and croft
from his parents when they died in an
influenza outbreak 5 years ago. Tersil was
only 13 at the time. With permission of the
Serolan, the toft and croft had been held in
stewardship by the reeve, Kethor of Dalgath
(#2), until Tersil turned 18 this past year. Tersil
resided with Kethor until his 18th birthday, but
has worked for the Kelis clan (#11) since he
was orphaned.
Upon his 18th birthday, Tersil sought the
hand of Briele of Sosor from Abriel in mar-
riage. As the marriage would not negatively
impact church lands as far as manpower went,
the Serolan recommended approval of the
marriage to Rekela Ilor, who, in turn, gave his
blessing to the union.
Briele’s father, Yrunda(#20, Abriel Abbey
fanon), was not so keen on the marriage. After
a particularly fiery sermon about Saint Ysolde
the Trothmaker by Ebasethe Merudus, Yrunda
finally consented to the marriage. It was in
good time, too, as Briele gave birth to a full-
term boy six months after their marriage.
Tersil, as the oldest Broatch in Gedan, is
the clan head. When Tersil first took posses-
sion of his family’s toft and croft, he took in
two cousins, Thyman and Alessa. They had
likewise been orphaned by the influenza
outbreak, and then subsequently fostered by

Kethor the Reeve. After Tersil married Briele,
however, things changed. All five members of
the Broatch clan in Gedan decided that all
would be more comfortable with Thyman and
Alessa staying with Tersil’s little brother, Ranal
(#7). Thus, the newlyweds could begin their
new lives together in privacy.
4. Cottar (Shemlen of Dalgath)
Size: 1
Shemlen is Kethor’s (#2) younger brother.
After their parents died, Kethor took Shemlen
and the rest of their family in. Shemlen turned
18 last year and wanted to strike it out on his
own. As their parent’s toft and croft had re-
mained empty after the influenza outbreak 5
years ago, Kethor was able to convince the
Serolan of Abriel to grant Shemlen the toft and
croft.
Shemlen is a poor farmer. Even Kethor
had to admit to Maranoth of Kelis (#11) in pri-
vate that Shemlen should probably not be
granted additional acreage until his skills im-
prove. To keep the peace between the two
brothers while at the same time protecting the
interests of the Abbey, Maranoth agreed to
recommend publicly that the Serolan decline
Shemlen’s request for additional acres until he
can prove himself to be a better farmer.
Known for his blunt honesty, Maranoth’s
judgment was accepted by the Serolan and the
rest of the hamlet at Hallmoot. Shemlen has
not spoken politely to Maranoth since.
5. Villein/Woodward (Jarlath of
Dalgath) Size: 3
Where Dyrman of Quosso (#10) pretty much
has free range of the forest to the south of
Gedan because of the conditions of the Abbey’s
lease of the quarry, Jarlath manages Gedan’s
woods to the north of the hamlet. Jarlath
works closely with his little brother, Geldane
(#6), who happens to be Gedan’s superb
herder. Between the two, the swine herd of

Gedan is afforded some of the best pannage of
Nelafayn Hundred.
Jarlath is married and has one surviving
son (age 2). Although Jarlath philandered a lot
in the past, he and his wife, Gwelen, have
recommitted themselves to the marriage. Their
son is the result. Jarlath lost a daughter to the
influenza outbreak 5 years ago and still
mourns “the light of his life.”
As the oldest brother of the Dalgath boys,
Jarlath is the clan-head and inherited the clan’s
15 free acres. The Dalgaths know that they are
unfree, and do not challenge their serfdom in
court in spite of the free acres. They, instead,
use the free acres to supplement the clan’s
revenues since they only owe rent for the free
acres. They then use the extra revenue for
refurbishing tools, refurbishing buildings, or
increasing their herd size.
On a normal manor, only the nobility may
hunt that manor’s woods. Where Gedan is a
hamlet subordinate to Abriel Abbey, and
Rekela Ilor generally despises martial prowess,
the nobility of Abriel Abbey don’t normally
hunt Gedan’s woods. As such, Jarlath has
allowed Charancë of Katen (Abriel’s wood-
ward) to hunt Gedan’s woods for the Abbey’s
residents. While technically poaching, Jarlath
and Maranoth (#11) turn a blind eye because
Charancë is doing his job and stays on Abbey
lands as far as they know….
6. Villein/Herder (Geldane of
Dalgath) Size: 4
Geldane is Kethor’s (#2) older brother, but
Jarlath’s (#6) younger brother. Aside from
being an excellent farmer, Geldane is Gedan’s
expert herder. He just seems to have a way
with all animals, and the rest of the hamlet
defers to him when it comes to their animals.
Geldane married his sweetheart, Yaelina
of Broatch, when they were both barely old
enough to marry. Their first year of marriage
was rocky as they both still had growing up to

do, but things seem to have settled. They lost
two girls to the influenza outbreak 5 years ago.
They have two boys, ages 6 and 1.
7. Cottar (Ranal of Broatch)
Size: 3
Ranal is the younger brother of Tersil (#3). He
is 17, but petitioned for a croft and toft of his
own at the same time Tersil took possession of
his inheritance. As Gedan had an extra hold-
ing that hadn’t been filled since the influenza
outbreak 5 years ago, the Serolan recom-
mended that Ranal be installed in his own croft
and toft. Rekela Ilor agreed with his Serolan
and invested Ranal with his own croft and toft.
Rekela Ilor also promised to invest him with
more lands next year should he be profitable.
Although only 17, Ranal has taken in two
cousins that were left orphaned from the influ-
enza outbreak 5 years ago. Originally fostered
with Kethor the Reeve (#2), and then Ranal’s
older brother Tersil (#3), 15 year old Thyman
and his 13 year old sister, Alessa, are likewise
from clan Broatch.
The arrangement has worked out well as
Ranal and Thyman are best friends. Alessa
sometimes feels like the outsider, but her
brother and cousin ensure her needs are met.
Ranal relies almost exclusively on demesne
work for his little “family’s” support,
something Kethor ensures there is plenty of.
One of Dyrman of Quosso’s (#10) appren-
tices, Felarund of Marthis, has been paying

attention to Alessa lately. Alessa is infatuated
with him and can’t stop talking about him.
Ranal thinks nothing of it. Maranoth the
Beadle (#11), on the other hand, had travelled
extensively throughout Kaldor during his time
in the Lady of Paladins and saw the potential
problems.
Pulling the boy aside one day, Maranoth
quoted both Laranian and Peonian theology on
true love as opposed to base lust. Maranoth
then had a very “open and honest” conversa-
tion with Felarund about what Maranoth and
his fellows in the Lady of Paladins did to
scoundrels. Although Felarund still flirts with
Alessa, Felarund now shies away from being
too near her for too long, especially when
Maranoth is around. This, of course, has left
Alessa confused…
8. Ruins
This toft and croft was the residence of a
prosperous villein, Cerner of Ardin, and his
family. He had set aside a portion of his
wealth as savings toward the purchase of a
finely-wrought silver brooch with a piece of
amber set in it from Doldas of Nyosn in Olo-
kand. The brooch was a gift for his wife.
Although warned against being too ostenta-
tious by Abriel’s Serolan, Lorald of Banadar,
Lorald nevertheless granted Cerner permission
to travel to Olokand to purchase the bauble for
his wife. Elated by the gift he was going to be
able to give his wife, Cerner talked amiably
with all he met on the road to and from
Olokand about his purpose for travelling.
Cerner was able to travel to and from
Olokand safely. However, his conversations
with his fellow travellers eventually made their
way to Telin the Red’s ears. Two months ago,
Telin the Red and his men struck. Running
from the forest that stands south of Cerner’s
croft on a moonless night, they ransacked
Cerner’s toft looking for the brooch and any
other wealth the Ardins might have had.

Things got out of hand as Cerner tried to
prevent Telin’s men from taking his wife’s
brooch. In the ensuing fight, Telin’s men
murdered the whole family and set fire to the
toft. Maranoth of Kelis (#11), Gedan’s beadle,
and his oldest son, Forant, arrived within
minutes. They were too late to save the family,
but killed five of the bandits before the bandits
were able to flee back into the forest to the
south.
The toft and croft has gone unrepaired and
unattended since the Ardin family’s murders.
Most of the villagers avoid the croft because
the Ardin family’s ghosts still linger. Also, the
five bandits killed by Maranoth and his son
likewise linger. Cerner’s little brother is Balin
of Ardin (#4, Abriel Abbey fanon). Rekela Ilor
has offered Cerner’s lands to Balin in an effort
to help the younger Ardin. Balin is deathly
afraid of the ghosts inhabiting his brother’s
former toft and croft, and has told the Rekela
he would like to ponder over the matter as the
family was still in mourning.
This attack has since been used by both the
Peonian clergy and the Laranian clergy in
Nelafayn Hundred to make various liturgical
points. The Peonians preach that true
happiness comes from within, and not from
how society views the outer appearance. Also,
many sermons were preached about being
content with what you have, providing for
your family, and then seeing to the needs of
others. The Laranians, on the other hand,
preached about the necessity of sumptuary
customs. Commoners should not try to ape
their social superiors. Sumptuary customs
existed not just to clearly define social rank,
but also to protect the commonalty from the
depridations of evil men. Cerner’s family, after
all, would not have suffered if Cerner had not
tried to dress his wife up as a noble lady.
Similar to the Peonians, the Laranians likewise
preached that a person should know their
place in society and be content with it.

9. Half-Villein (Tarth of Pinel)
Size: 6
Tarth was an excellent farmer until three years
ago, when Maranoth of Kelis (#11) cut off his
right hand (see “Hamlet Law” below). Now,
the most he can claim is that he can accomplish
his tasks adequately. Maranoth, ever-
apologetic about cutting his hand off, helps
Tarth bring in his harvests and fulfill his labor
obligations owed to the Rekela. Tarth and
Maranoth have become fast friends since the
incident.
Tarth’s lands are not enough to support
his family, but Kethor the Reeve (#2) ensures
there is plenty of work available on demesne
lands for Tarth/Maranoth to feed Tarth’s
family. Mera, Tarth’s wife, rarely leaves their
croft out of shame after Tarth publicly exposed
and humiliated her for her infidelity.
Tarth and Mera would have split over the
matter, but Ebasethe Merudus from Abriel has
been counseling the couple. Tarth and Mera
have four surviving children: a boy (12), a girl
(10), a girl (7), and a boy (4). They lost their
oldest son and a baby daughter to the influ-
enza 5 years ago, and slowly grew apart as a
result.
10. Timber Wright (Dyrman of
Quosso) Size: 6
Quality: **** Prices: High
Dyrman is a self-important man who
blundered himself into a sure thing. He has an
old forest from which he can harvest trees. He
has an absentee lord who only cares for his
annual rent and licensing fees. He has a 19
year old journeyman to manage the logistical
nightmare of transporting the wood. Two
apprentices, both age 16, do the actual labor.
Lastly, his wife is good with numbers and
handling the more sensitive diplomatic discus-
sions with a Rekela and/or the Rekela’s assis-
tants. Dyrman need only show up at the work
sites occasionally to steer his workers where he

thinks they should go, and then sit back and
enjoy the fruits of their labors.
That said, he can still outwork both his
apprentices combined, and has done so when
their grumbling seems to get loud. Both of his
sons are apprenticed to cousins outside Nela-
fayn. One poignant abnormality in his life is
his daughter, Camissa (age 15), who seems to
just flit about the forest without a care in the
world.
Dyrman is an excellent judge of trees. He
has a keen sense of which trees will make
excellent lumber for carving into furniture,
which trees will make excellent timbers for
timber buildings, which trees will make
excellent lumber for the more common wattle
and daub houses most commoners live in, and
which trees can be used for ornamental wood-
work. The woodworkers of Nelafayn, if they
need a particularly good piece of wood for a
project and can afford his prices, will often
come to Gedan to get some of Dyrman’s wood.
Dyrman has two enemies that he con-
tends with in the forest: brigands and the Fey.
After Telin the Red’s attack on Gedan, Dyrman
has tried restricting his daughter’s movements
to no avail. He is slowly developing an ulcer
over her.
He also worries about what Telin’s men
will do to his operations. He now requires his
men to haul all their tools back to the
lumberyard south of his toft every night, and
then haul all of them back out to the work site
every day. He is also concerned about their
physical safety. So far, Telin’s men haven’t
wanted to attack a group of men armed with
axes, but things can change. Dyrman is
considering hiring a mercenary to watch over
his workers.
The Fey, as Dyrman and his men refer to
them, are more a nuisance that can put them
behind in their work for several days. Neither
Dyrman nor his workers have ever seen the
Fey at work, but there have been days when
Dyrman has laid an axe on the ground, turned

around to another task, and turned back only
to find the axe missing. Then, days later,
Dyrman will find the axe hanging from the
doorway to his toft. Dyrman thinks the Fey
don’t want him in their forest.
It has taken him eight years to figure it
out, but Dyrman finally realized that the Fey
only get active when he and his workers are
cutting into a particularly old or rare tree.
Since his epiphany, Dyrman has directed his
workers toward more acceptable trees, but he
still feels the Fey watch their every move
waiting for him or his workers to slip up. If
Dyrman knew that the Fey were actually
Uthriem Roliri, he probably would insist that
Rekela Ilor have the Lady of Paladins cleanse
the forest of the obviously masterless men to
protect his guild’s rights….
11. Yeoman/Beadle (Maranoth of
Kelis) Size: 5
The Kelis clan is an ancient free clan that has
held this yeomanship since Sanric II granted
the Laranian Church its lands in 170. See “The
Proud and Ancient Yeomanship of Clan Kelis”
below for more information regarding Clan
Kelis’s history.
Because of this history, Rekela Parga
Indama granted the Kelis clan permission to
replace their wattle-and-daub toft with a
timber home upon Maranoth’s retirement from
the Lady of Paladins in 713. With Rekela
Parga’s permission, the Kelis clan also took the
opportunity to build the new farmstead with a
slate roof.
The costs associated with replacing their
toft nearly bankrupted the Kelis clan, and saw
many of their hard valuables sold off to meet
the expenses. The result is a sturdy farmhouse
that could be used as a redoubt for the villag-
ers should trouble come to Gedan (perhaps a
bit of foresight of future succession troubles for
Kaldor on the part of Rekela Parga?). Mara-
noth’s current household/farm expenditures

and incomes have been discussed extensively
above in “Economics and Agrarian Life.”
Maranoth appreciates the willingness of
his wife, Henda, to treat his mother with
respect due an honored matriarch. He also
appreciates the willingness of his mother,
Serenil, to acknowledge Henda’s position in
the household. Both women are proud, but
recognize the household can only function if
they get along well. Although they may not
treat each other as mother/daughter at times,
they are nevertheless amicable in a neighborly
fashion. Maranoth’s father died from influenza
five years ago.
Maranoth has put Forant, as the oldest
son, under considerable pressure to carry on
the proud and ancient tradition of serving
Larani. Forant wants to please his father very
much, and tries hard to do everything his
father asks of him as best he can. With two
more years of training, Forant will make an
excellent candidate for the Lady of Paladins.
Callon, Maranoth’s younger son, shows a
particular affinity for horseflesh. Maranoth
used his influence in the Lady of Paladins to
secure him a position as a groom for one of the
Iversen Melana attending the Royal Chelebin
Tournament of Chivalry this year. Maranoth
believes that Callon could make an excellent
Ataken in the Lady of Paladins, and encour-
ages him to improve his skillset so that he may
serve Larani in that capacity.
12. Demesne Barn
This site consists of three functioning areas:
the granaries, the punfold, and the actual
demesne barn. Maranoth of Kelis (#11), the
beadle, oversees the punfold and the granaries.
Kethor of Dalgath (#2), the reeve, oversees the
demesne barn.
The granaries normally only hold the
planting seed for Gedan. The tenants store
their share of the grain in their own tofts, and

Abriel Abbey normally hauls the Rekela’s
share to the Abbey after each harvest. Where
the Rekela is an absentee lord, Maranoth’s
father convinced Rekela Parga Indama to
install locks (level 1) on the doors to the
granaries in 712.
The punfold is one of the least-used
punfolds in Nelafayn Hundred. The attentive-
ness of Gedan’s beadle and herder is the reason
this condition exists. Maranoth of Kelis only
confiscates stray animals if they cause damage
or if they are a repeat offender. Also, Geldane
of Dalgath (#6), Gedan’s herder, is an except-
ional herder; very few animals he cares for
stray where they don’t belong.
The demesne barn is the domain of
Kethor of Dalgath (#2), the reeve. In a locked
compartment (level 1 lock) of the lower level of
the barn, Kethor stores all of the demesne’s
shears, hoes, shovels, scythes, sickles, and
other tools necessary for farming. During the
winter, the lower level also houses the winter
herds of the demesne’s animals. The upper
level is devoted entirely to hay storage.
Beginning in late winter, as their own stores
start running low, a cart arrives from the
Abbey or Iversen to collect hay once every
fortnight or so.
13. Villein (Branald of Dalgath)
Size: 8
Branald is a good, solid farmer. His lands,
however, are insufficient to support his large
family. Fortunately, the Kelis clan (#11)
needed a serving girl to help with their
household chores. Branald’s oldest daughter,
Lenael, was old enough to suit their needs.
Lenael has served in the Kelis home since
she was 11. The payments in kind she brings
into her family’s household are sufficient for
her family to stay afloat financially. Branald
even ensures she gets a few coins each year

that she may spend on herself as she pleases in
honor of her sacrifices for the family.
Lenael takes her mid-day meal at the
Kelis home, but sleeps and eats her other meals
at her family’s toft. Aside from Lenael, Bra-
nald and his wife have five other children at
home: a boy (12), a girl (10), a boy (9), a boy
(8), and a girl (6). They had a baby girl taken
by the influenza 5 years ago. The constant
pregnancies have left Branald’s wife incapable
of having more children.
HAMLET LAW
R ekela Ilor ignores Gedan as long as
the revenues continue to flow from it.
He has formally invested Kethor of
Dalgath (#2), the reeve, with the administra-
tion of Gedan. Rekela Ilor then left the
oversight of the hamlet to his Serolan in Abriel.
The Serolan of Abriel has told Gedan’s beadle
and reeve, Maranoth of Kelis (#11) and Kethor
of Dalgath, that as long as they worked out
problems amongst themselves, he would let
the hamlet run itself. Maranoth and Kethor
have explained this arrangement to the other
villagers, and everyone generally abides by
this tacit agreement with the Serolan.
In agricultural matters, Maranoth the Beadle
defers to Kethor the Reeve, as it is his “station
in life to manage the agricultural affairs of the
lord Rekela’s lands in Gedan.” In the admin-
istration of law, however, Maranoth of Kelis
has become the de facto (though, of course, not
de juris) lord of Gedan. As beadle, and, more
importantly, as the man with the biggest
sword, the people of Gedan treat his word as
law.
Maranoth, instead of using the position to
aggrandize himself or his family, treats his
position as a sacred calling. He treats all
equally under the law as he thinks Larani
Herself would. Furthermore, Maranoth firmly

believes in the holy order of Tirithor and in-
stantly defers to the opinions of any visiting
clergy of Larani or Melana of the Lady of
Paladins.
Most people in the hamlet choose to accept
Maranoth’s judgments rather than risk a
harsher judgment at Abriel’s Hallmoot.
Although Maranoth has martial equipment
equivalent to what he wore when he was a
Sergeant of the Whyce Low Guard, Maranoth
travels about the hamlet most days armed only
with a short sword.
Recently, Maranoth confiscated a hand mill
from Shemlen of Dalgath (#4) and ordered him
to compensate Aras of Dyrela, the miller of
Abriel, for Aras’ financial loss. Shemlen real-
ized that the Rekela considers the infringement
of guild rights akin to theft, and the Rekela’s
judgement would probably cost him a hand.
Shemlen angrily agreed to Maranoth’s judg-
ment and paid the exorbitant fee Aras set for
him. The relationship between Shemlen and
Maranoth was already strained from when
Maranoth recommended that Shemlen not be
granted more lands by the Rekela (see #4
above). This incident has only exacerbated the
tension between Maranoth and Shemlen.
A particularly torrid affair became public
knowledge three years ago. It was between
Jarlath of Dalgath (#5) and Mera of Pinel, Tarth
of Pinel’s wife (#9). Tarth and Jarlath’s wife,
Gwelen, got together and planned out acts of
vengeance against their two adulterous
spouses. Tarth and Gwelen entrapped their
two recalcitrant spouses in a net while Jarlath
and Mera were having sex in Jarlath’s barn.
Gwelen and Tarth then invited most of the
hamlet in to see and poke fun at the adulterous
couple. The two scorned spouses then invited
the other villagers to each take turns whacking
the adulterous couple with a stick. Maranoth
threw the barn doors open just as the whacking
was about to begin, and ordered the couple to
be released unharmed.

Tarth stomped over to Maranoth and started
arguing with him. Maranoth remained calm in
the face of open hostility, as he was trained to
do in the Lady of Paladins. When Tarth’s
anger overcame him and he drew his dagger,
Maranoth reacted with instincts that none in
Gedan had ever seen. In less than the blink of
an eye, Maranoth drew his short sword and
sliced off Tarth’s dagger hand.
Maranoth instantly regretted his response,
especially after most of the villagers present
cowered in fear away from him. When Mar-
anoth presented himself and the two couples at
the next Hallmoot to explain the situation, the
Serolan found no fault with Maranoth’s
actions. The Serolan cited Maranoth’s author-
ity as an agent of the Rekela, the Bailiff of the
Hundred, and therefore he was an agent of the
Crown in the matters of keeping the general
peace.
In a rare act of contrition toward the Reluc-
tant Way, and in spite of the Serolan’s assess-
ment of his innocence, Maranoth nevertheless
requested a formal confession from the Rekela.
Rekela Ilor normally doesn’t concern himself
with the mundane matters of the world. Nei-
ther does he normally concern himself with the
confessions from a common yeoman. Rekela
Ilor nevertheless saw this as a teaching mo-
ment. He could use the repentant Sergeant of
the Whyce Low Guard as an example to all
who would take up arms. Rekela Ilor listened
to Maranoth confess his sin of being too eager
for battle.
Maranoth knew his confession to the Rekela
would be used to propagate the Reluctant Way
at the next Soratir. However, he also knew he
had acted more on instinct than out of a sense
of thoughtful self defense. In confession,
Rekela Ilor chastised Maranoth significantly for
bloodlust, but he also brought a measure of
comfort to Maranoth’s soul. Rekela Ilor differ-
entiated Maranoth’s actions from those of an
Agrikan.

Where Maranoth reacted out of instinct
honed through constant fighting, an Agrikan
would have egged Tarth on to provoke him.
Instead of disarming Tarth, as Maranoth had
done, an Agrikan would have killed Tarth
outright. Where Maranoth regretted having
used force to cause harm, especially lasting
harm, an Agrikan would have shown no re-
morse for what he did, and may have even
enjoyed it. Lastly, since the Agrikan felt no
remorse for his actions, the Agrikan would not
make amends for his actions. Maranoth, as a
true believer in Larani’s justice and mercy, felt
remorse for his actions, and would continually
try to make amends for his use of force.
The penance Rekela Ilor placed on Maranoth
was that Maranoth was to shoulder Tarth’s
burdens when they became too heavy for him
to bear as a cripple. If Tarth could not meet his
labor obligations to the demesne, Maranoth
must. If Tarth could not bring in his family’s
harvest by himself, Maranoth must help him
before Maranoth could harvest his own. While
the Abriel Melana of the Lady of Paladins
groaned at the abuse Rekela Ilor placed on
their sword brother, Maranoth took Rekela
Ilor’s penance as a sign that Larani would yet
redeem him.
To date, Maranoth has yet to commence his
harvest before Tarth’s harvest is in. Also,
Maranoth will go into the demesne furlongs
with Tarth to help him meet his labor obliga-
tions. Odd as it would seem, Maranoth and
Tarth have become good friends since the
incident.
Not all residents of the hamlet have so easily
forgotten Maranoth’s use of force. Most of the
hamlet now speaks to Maranoth while stand-
ing at least two sword lengths away. This

saddens him since he doesn’t see himself as a
bloodthirsty barbarian. He understands their
trepidations, though, and accepts this social
punishment as another form of penance
imposed upon him by Larani.
Maranoth imposed a form of penance on the
hamlet, though, for their part in these troubles.
He held a barn gathering after Rekela Ilor im-
posed his penance on him. Armed with his
broadsword, Lightbringer, he informed all the
residents that none of this mess would have
occurred if the hamlet had stayed true to the
teachings of Peoni and Larani regarding chaste
love.
Noting that the Peonian clergy were
inconsistent in coming to Gedan from the
temple in Abriel, the Kelis clan would there-
fore send a rider to Abriel on Faithful every
Peonian holy day to bring one of the clerics to
say Lesser Sapelah for the good folks of Gedan.
Drawing Lightbringer, Maranoth informed
everyone that all residents of Gedan would be
expected to attend Lesser Sapelah “so that they
could begin reforming their lives.” The threat
was left unspoken.
THE PROUD AND
ANCIENT YEOMANSHIP
OF CLAN KELIS
S ince 170, at least one member of the
Kelis clan has served first, as a mem-
ber of the Abriel Temple Low Warri-

ors, and then as Meken in the Lady of Paladins
since the order’s inception in 575. Even during
the dark days of civil unrest, when the Kelis
clan had to withdraw to the protection of
Abriel, the Kelis clan worked to defend Abriel.
After the land became tame, the Kelis clan
was granted their lands once again. The Her-
alds in the Enclave of the Golden Orb recently
discovered the Kelis clan name listed amongst
the common soldiers defending Alamire in a
400 year old text that described (poetically)
Saint Ambrathas’s martyrdom and the destruc-
tion of Alamire.
In recent clan history, Maranoth’s
grandfather died at the Battle of the Chelna
Gap in 672. He roused a company of Meken to
the defense of the Earl of Balim’s faltering
banner. Intentionally placing himself between
a Thardic spear and the Earl, he bought the
Earl enough time to rally to the king’s banner.
The Dariune clan has never forgotten
the sacrifice of “Larani’s most noble yeoman.”
They have instructed their lord of Hetheron
Manor (Dariune’s nearest holding to Abriel) to
supply the Kelis clan of Gedan with a stag each
year in honor of their sacrifice.
In 673, Maranoth’s father, a newly-
minted Bauken of the Lady of Paladins, was
granted the honor of protecting the flank of
Reblena Mero of Chesel as he cut his way to
the Thardic Legion’s banner at the Battle of the
Ramala Gap. He survived the assault, but
walked proudly with a limp the rest of his
days.
Maranoth’s service to Larani was no less
prestigious. Although he probably could have
used his father’s and grandfather’s prestige to
obtain choice assignments within the Lady of
Paladins, Maranoth insisted on earning his
own rewards. Over the course of his 20 year
enlistment, Maranoth served with the feudal
levies along the Oselmarch and the Chelmarch.
Maranoth was also part of the force
fielded by the Lady of Paladins from Jenkald in
704 that destroyed a gargun swarm near the
HârnWorld

Guthe River along the Silver Way. In 710,
Maranoth earned the rank of Sergeant of the
Low Guard at Whyce.
Just prior to his planned retirement in
713, Maranoth had one last chance to shine in
the Lady of Paladins. A messenger from the
Constable of Heru arrived crying loudly that
an underground Morgathian chapel had been
discovered in Heru lands. The Constable was
formally requesting the help of the church
knights to secure the site prior to the arrival of
the Serekela’s deputation from Caleme that
would cleanse the temple of its unholy blight
and consecrate the surrounding land.
The Reblena did not hesitate, and
mustered a full squadron of Melana and a full
company of Meken. Maranoth decided as the
senior Sergeant of the Whyce Low Guard that
he would not risk another’s soul in his place.
He took the task of leading his men into a
combat situation that could possibly end with
their souls enslaved to Morgath. Also, he
purposely chose men for his squadron who
were especially devout to Larani so that some
measure of Larani’s grace might protect them.
Upon arriving in Heru, the constable
hastily told the men from the Lady of Paladins
the story of how he found the Morgathian holy
site. Some local youths had been exploring a
hitherto unknown cave in the woods, and
came out crying about cold and moving shad-
ows that whispered to them in the depths of
the cave.
The constable and his men went to
investigate and slowly snaked their way into
the depths of the cave. After an hour of
clambering, the constable and his men came
upon a passageway of worked stone that
ended in a double door. The door was made of
stone and appeared to be sealed through age.
The sigils on the exterior of the door, however,
were written in an unrecognizable script. The
constable, barely literate in Lakise, did not
recognize the script. He did, however, feel
abnormally cold and seemed to hear

whispering from beyond the door as the
youths had.
The constable summoned Heru’s
chaplain, a man learned in several languages.
After examining the door briefly, the chaplain
noticed that the door handles were encircled
by 13 Durangashes. The chaplain immediately
scrambled backwards and ordered everyone
out of the cave. When the constable and his
men hesitated, the chaplain started physically
shoving the constable and his men out of the
cave. It wasn’t until they were out in the
sunlight again that the chaplain explained
what he found to the confused men of Heru.
The chaplain told the men that the script
on the door was a form of Khruni that he
didn’t recognize, but that the Durangashes
represented the Shadow of Bukrai on Morgath.
The chamber beyond, it seemed, was dedicated
to the Lord of the Gulmorvrin of the Black Pit.
The constable ordered the site guarded day
and night, and ordered the chaplain to Caleme
to request a deputation from the Serekela to
come cleanse the site. After dispatching the
chaplain to Caleme, the constable then sent for
the Lady of Paladins.
Once he finished explaining the story to
the members of the Lady of Paladins, he led
them to the site. There, Sergeant Maranoth
immediately ordered his men and the consta-
ble’s men to begin building earthworks around
the entrance to the cave. By the time the
Serekela’s representatives arrived three days
later, Sergeant Maranoth had effectively built a
miniature fort guarding the entrance to the
cave.
Prior to descending into the bowels of
the earth, the clergy held a special Soratir
where they conducted several rituals to in-
crease the courage and combat skill of all of
Larani’s faithful going down to the Morgathian
holy site. Once they finished, the clerics led the
way with a crystal reliquary containing a frag-
ment of Alamire’s stained glass windows
(called Alamire’s Fragment). Alamire’s Frag-

ment seemed to emanate an aura of holy light
that drove the shadows and unnatural cold
away from the Laranians.
Upon arriving at the doorway, the
clerics spent a good hour examining the double
door. The senior cleric informed all present
that the script on the door was indeed Nuv-
esarl, the unholy script of the Morgathians.
Furthermore, the crypt beyond appeared to be
a repository of Gulmorvrin to be used in some
future conflict by the Morgathians. The idea
that there would be several Gulmorvrin, and
possibly even an Amorvrin, beyond the doors
was chilling enough. That the Morgathians
had been preparing for an apocalypse of some
kind with legions of undead was downright
disturbing to the Laranians.
At that point, Sergeant Maranoth recom-
mended that the Laranians rig the doors to
open to let a few morvrin out at a time. They
would use counter ropes to shut the doors
when the Melana felt enough morvrin had
exited. Once the Laranians had destroyed the
morvrin who had come through, the Laranians
would open the doors to let a few more out.
They would do this until no more morvrin
rushed out.
At that point, Sergeant Maranoth
suggested, the Meken would fire flaming
arrows into the crypt to hopefully brighten the
room and maybe even catch on fire any
remaining morvrin who had caught on to the
Laranians’ strategy. After that, the Lady of
Paladins would rush in and fight whatever
was left while the clergy would rush in and
begin the ritual necessary to desecrate a chapel
consecrated to Morgath.
The first part of the plan worked
beautifully. Using their spears to keep the
morvrin at bay, the Melana and Meken were
able to easily dispatch a few of the undead at a
time. Once the morvrin stopped rushing
through the doors every time they opened, the
Laranians opened the doors and the Meken

fired in their volley of flame arrows. No other
morvrin appeared to be in the crypt.
The Melana walked cautiously toward
the altar at the far end of the room, ordering
the Meken to check each of the niches lining
the room on either side of the chapel for addi-
tional morvrin. There appeared to be none left,
and so the Melana signaled the all-clear for the
clerics.
Once Alamire’s Fragment crossed the
threshold, however, things went awry in a
hurry. The flagstone flooring in front of the
altar exploded outwards, knocking several of
the Melana and Meken prone. Rising from the
floor was a gulmorvrus made from a H’ru, a
giant, and armored in bronze plate. “A
Dalkeshi Gulmorvrus,” one of the younger
clergy behind Maranoth whispered fearfully.
Having stayed behind to serve as the rearward
guard for the clerics, Sergeant Maranoth
charged the Dalkeshi Gulmorvrus with his
spear.
The force of Sergeant Maranoth’s impact
sent the Dalkeshi Gulmorvrus reeling back-
ward over the altar, impaled by Sergeant
Maranoth’s spear. Those Meken who re-
mained standing likewise charged the Dalkeshi
Gulmorvrus with their spears. Unable to
extract his spear from the Gulmorvrus, Ser-
geant Maranoth grabbed a spear from one of
his Meken who had been knocked prone and
continued his assault on the Gulmorvrus. The
attack by Maranoth gave time to the Melana
and Meken who had been knocked prone to
get up off the ground and join in the frey.
The clerics, in the meantime, had
entered the crypt and began chanting their
cleansing ritual. Seemingly enraged by the
presence of a Laranian-consecrated artifact in
his crypt, as well by the ritual being performed
by the clerics, the gulmorvrus went berserk.
With unnatural strength and resilience,
the gulmorvrus pushed through the ring wall
of spears, attacking any who stood between
him and the clergy with his clawed hands.

Time and again, Melana and Meken saw Myr-
vria the Temptress appear and offer them her
choice, and both Melana and Meken called on
Larani to save their souls. Realizing that none
of the Laranians chose to embrace the Shadow
of Bukrai, and that Larani was protecting their
souls, the Dalkeshi Gulmorvrus began attack-
ing them with the intent to kill them instead of
converting them.
By the time the clerics finished their
ritual, Maranoth was the only member of the
Lady of Paladins left battling the Dalkeshi
Gulmorvrus. The clerics watched in awe as
time and again, it lunged at Maranoth. And,
time and again, Maranoth side-stepped it.
After one forceful lunge by the morvrus that
left it unbalanced, Maranoth used his spear
shaft to swipe the legs of the morvrus out from
underneath it. Once on its back on the ground,
the Laranian clerics grabbed spears and joined
Maranoth in skewering it again and again until
it crumbled into dust like all the other morvrin.
The Laranians spent the next day carry-
ing their dead out to the light of day. Alt-
hough the temple had been desecrated and re-
consecrated to Larani, Maranoth suggested
they collapse the crypt and chapel in on itself
to ensure that Morgathians could not re-
consecrate it and use it for evil purposes again.
The clergy agreed and gave Maranoth over-
sight of the project.
Afterwards, the Laranians took their
dead to Whyce for proper burial. They then
reported the tale to Sir Houla of Artona,
Reblena of Whyce, and Serekela Edine Kynne
at Caleme. Of particular note, the clerics
mentioned, was the fact that Sergeant Mara-
noth knew his men well enough to choose
Meken who were especially pious.
Their piety, it seemed, enabled them to
call upon Larani for Divine Intervention when
their souls were about to be sacrificed to
Bukrai by the Dalkeshi Gulmorvrus. None of
the Meken or Melana arose as Gulmorvrin. Sir

Houla was so moved by the clergy’s tale that
he, with the consent of the crown and Serekela
Edine Kynne, gave Sergeant Maranoth his
Khuzan-made broadsword (aptly named
“Lightbringer”). Lightbringer is Maranoth’s
most-prized possession. Maranoth normally
only pulls Lightbringer down from its place of
honor over the fireplace mantle for two
reasons: to fulfill his feudal obligations or to
defend Gedan.
The tale of this battle quickly spread
through the ranks of the Lady of Paladins in
Kaldor, Chybisa, and Melderyn. Even in
chapter houses guarding the Kanday/Rethem
border, the Checkered Shield was regaled with
tales of Sergeant Maranoth of the Whyce Low
Guard. Gedan, in particular, and Nelafayn
Hundred, in general, likewise heard the tale
told again and again by Erana of the Lady of
Paladins travelling to the Royal Chelebin
Tournament.
The Kelis name, already greatly respected
in Nelafayn Hundred, soared to new heights of
epic heroism. Many youths from free and
noble families in Nelafayn enlisted with the
Lady of Paladins as Meken or Melana after the
battle became common knowledge.
The experience was horrific enough to
live through once, though, and Maranoth still
has nightmares of the battle that claimed so
many of his brothers. Consequently, Maranoth
eschews telling and retelling the story to every
new hero-worshiper that he meets. If asked to
talk about it by commoners, Maranoth changes
the subject or leaves the vicinity. If asked to
talk about it by nobles, Maranoth retells the
story as quickly as he can, mincing no words.
While Maranoth does not like reliving the
memories, Henda, his wife, treats the battle in
the Morgathian temple as a point of pride for
the Kelis clan. Whenever she meets someone
new, she makes a point of steering the
conversation towards Maranoth’s involvement.
The ancient heritage of serving Larani in
Kaldor, coupled with the discovery by Heralds

working under the Sunrise King of Arms in
Cherafir, has pushed the Kelis clan name to
near-mythical proportions amongst the yeo-
men of Nelafayn Hundred and the Meken of
the Lady of Paladins. The fact that Maranoth
achieved the rank of Sergeant of the Whyce
Low Guard has only increased this prestige.
Only newly-minted Ainlana, and politically
inept Rekela, underestimate the sheer influence
Maranoth of Kelis has within the Lady of
Paladins in Kaldor.
After his retirement, however, Maranoth
just wanted to be a simple yeoman. He moved
his family back home to Gedan and worked
alongside his father in the fields of Gedan until
his father died of influenza 5 years ago.
Maranoth has a brother who volunteered
to go fight in far-off Kanday during Ezar’s
War. Remlal was a Meken in the Lady of

Paladins when the call came for volunteers to
go defend Kanday against Agrikan aggression.
He was part of the reinforcements sent from
Melderyn in 689.
After serving honorably under the
command of the Checkered Shield for the
duration of Ezar’s War, Remlal retired and
became a yeoman near Menekod castle.
Maranoth has never been west to visit his
brother, and Remlal has never returned home.
The two have managed to trade letters once
per year through their connections in the two
Laranian fighting orders, though.
Maranoth has another brother who
resides in Nelafayn Hundred: Yoreth of Kelis
from Bifyrd Manor. Like most of the Kelis
clan, Yoreth joined the Lady of Paladins in his
youth. Unlike the rest of his clan, Yoreth
seems restless serving Larani in peace as a
yeoman farmer.
Maranoth and Henda have an 18 year old
daughter, Lerinil. When Lerinil turned 14, she
announced to the family that she desired to
join the church and hopefully would get to
serve as chaplain to one of the chapters of the
Lady of Paladins.
Maranoth was able to pay ¼ of Lerinil’s
seminary costs. Uncle Yoreth contributed
some toward her seminary costs. Even Uncle
Remlal from far-off Kanday contributed some
toward Lerinil’s seminary. In the end, the
Meken of the Lady of Paladins passed the plate
around at the various chapter houses to finish
paying for “Sergeant Maranoth’s daughter.”
Lerinil completed her seminary at Brynd,
and currently serves as Rekela Verda Emerel’s
personal scribe in Brynd. The Rekela
remembers “Corporal Maranoth” from his time
at the Brynd Shield Chapter and has taken a
grandfatherly interest in Lerinil.

ADVENTURE HOOKS
As I have mentioned several times above,
Gedan is unimportant in and of itself. It is
meant to be a backwater hamlet that represents
the tedium of everyday life. The GM could use
this article simply as filler. However, there are
a number of ideas that could be used to make
Gedan a basis for adventuring. Below are
some ideas.
Things That Go Bump in the Night,
Version 1
Although unimportant as a point of
political contest, Gedan lends itself well to the
idea of ghosts. The fact that it has been de-
stroyed time and again through armed conflict
means there are plenty of dead that could need
to be laid to rest again. The most recent deaths
have two sets of restless spirits wandering the
croft and burnt-out toft: the spirits of the
murdered peasants, and the spirits of Telin’s
men killed by Maranoth.
The peasants could be mostly-benign
after-images of the murdered peasants. They
are relatively harmless, and none of the villag-
ers have ever seen them leave the abandoned
croft. Harmless as they might be, seeing them
roam about croft and toft is unsettling to the
rest of the hamlet. Maranoth may offer charac-
ters a reward to find out how to put them to
rest short of bringing in a Laranian exorcist,
and give an even greater reward for actually
accomplishing the task.
Unbeknownst to the hamlet, the mur-
dered peasants can’t rest until Telin’s men are
put to rest. Telin’s men are angry at being
killed during what they thought should have
been a simple smash-and-grab. The characters
will probably have to fight them at least once
to convince them to talk. The dead bandits will
not rest until their “Telin” has been killed.

would reveal the location of their hideout
when they were alive.
This would be a good place to incorpo-
rate the “Bandit Hideout” article in Harn
Pottage 2. I would probably place it in the
forest south of Gedan and modify it to
accommodate your particular campaign. This
would allow you to incorporate an ancient
Khuzan tower into your campaign that the
Uthriem Roliri don’t want the people of
Nelafayn to find out about for one reason or
another.
The fact that the bandits are operating
out of the basement of the tower likewise
presents a side adventure involving the
Uthriem Roliri: the Rangers of Siem want to
know what happened to their warden watch-
ing over the forest south of Gedan and ask the
characters to investigate. You could make the
Khuzan tower separate from the ruins south of
the quarry, or you could use the ruins site in
the Nelafayn Quarry fanon article. If you use
the ruins site in the Nelafayn Quarry fanon
article, you will probably need to make two
modifications: the bear would have to be dealt
with, and the quarry would have to be
carefully avoided by the bandits so as not to
attract attention.
Careful conversation with the dead
bandits would also reveal the real identity of
their “Telin” as well as give a physical
description of him. A critical success would
even reveal information about how the real
Telin has lieutenants dress and act like him to
make it look like Telin the Red was a powerful
bandit lord capable of striking hard and fast in
multiple locations. This would be invaluable
information for further adventures regarding
Telin the Red.
Another ghost that could get the
peasants to ask the characters for help would
be that of Myrinel of Dalgath. She left her
work unfinished when she died during the
influenza outbreak 5 years ago, and has

deemed herself unfit to go to Valon. Her ghost
is harmless, though her presence is unsettling
to her past acquaintances. Kethor pleads with
the characters to “talk” with his dead wife to
convince her to go on to Valon. Myrinel will
not rest until she thinks that Gedan has
someone suitable to administer to Gedan’s
health needs.
One possible resolution is to force her
into Valon through exorcism. This would
probably earn them Kethor’s enmity. If a
player is looking to retire a character with
physician skill, why not kill two birds with one
stone and retire the character while peacefully
removing a ghost? Alternatively, if a character
has physician skills, and is willing to winter in
Gedan, they could train a midwife as a
replacement for Myrinel. Another possible
resolution would be for the characters to
convince a physician to relocate to the Abriel
environs.
Things That Go Bump in the Night,
Version 2
The residents keep hearing things mov-
ing around in the dark of night. They ascribe
the noises to spirits and ask the characters to
investigate. Unbeknownst to the residents of
Gedan, the noises in the dark could be one of
two things: bandits and/or a secret army.
If you choose to make the noises ban-
dits, the characters could track them on their
way to/from their hideout. The bandits use
the forest or woods of Gedan to operate from
because Rekela Ilor ignores the hamlet. The
Iversen Chapterhouse only patrols the road-
ways, and thus a bandit encampment deep in
the woods or forest would likely be undis-
turbed.
Of course, if the bandits use the woods,
Jarlath of Dalgath (#5) would probably know
of their existence. He could either be on the
take or he could be extorted to remain quiet.

On the flip side, if the bandits use the forest
south of Gedan as their hideout, Dyrman of
Quosso would have to be dealt with. Most
likely, the bandits could have captured Cam-
issa and are using her as a surety to guarantee
Dyrman’s silence.
If you choose to make the noises a secret
army, the characters could likewise track them
or a supply force on their way to/from their
base. King Miginath’s health has taken a turn
for the worse. Consequently, Sir Maldan Har-
abor has decided to put in place a force with
which he can neutralize any opposition in
Nelafayn.
He has assembled a small strike force of
20 men and has built them a base in the forest
south of Gedan. From there, his force can
make a surprise attack on the Iversen Chapter-
house, killing all Meken and Melana. As the
Melana of Abriel will not venture far from their
Rekela, this effectively neutralizes the military
strength of the church that could be mustered
against Sir Maldan in Nelafayn.
Then, donning surcoats with his blazon,
Sir Maldan would have his men quietly and
quickly march on the holdings of the Earls of
Osel and Vemion in the southern part of Nel-
afayn Hundred. At each manor, the lord
would be given the opportunity to join the
cause or fall by the sword. Supposedly, the
Earl of Neph’s holdings will not oppose him as
the Baron of Setrew has pledged his support.
The base in the forest would effectively
be a palisaded manor house. This would give
the characters plenty of opportunities to scout
out the strengths and weaknesses of this army.
It would also give the characters the oppor-
tunity to learn who is pulling the strings of this
army. Of course, Sir Maldan has the problem
of who else uses the forest, and who they
might talk to. The Gedan timber wright, the
Abriel charcoaler, the limestone quarry, and
the Fey all would have to be neutralized
through bribery, extortion, or violence. This

affords the gm plenty of opportunities for
his/her characters.
Telin the Red
The “Telin” who escaped Maranoth and
Forant wants revenge! Against the advice of
the real Telin, Fake Telin decides to raid the
Kelis farmstead and kill the entire clan as
punishment for their interloping. Afterward,
he and his men can take their time in plunder-
ing the rest of Gedan. The gm can have the
players get involved in several different ways.
First, Real Telin may decide that Fake
Telin’s brazenness and thirst for vengeance
poses a threat to his operation. He could
contact the characters directly or indirectly and
offer a reward to eliminate Fake Telin. Second,
the characters could be travelling to Abriel
hoping to stay the night at its inn. They could
come across Fake Telin and his men on the
move, or they could notice the smell of wood
smoke and see a fire over where the hamlet of
Gedan lays. Third, the characters could be
staying the night in Gedan for one reason or
another when Fake Telin attacks.
Zombie Apocalypse, Redoux
The dead are attacking Gedan! The
Dalkeshi Gulmorvrus that Maranoth helped
destroy (see “The Proud and Ancient Yeoman-
ship of Clan Kelis” above) is actually an Amor-
vrus. He was not destroyed in the battle that
Maranoth participated in, and it has taken him
this long to reform and track down “Sergeant
Maranoth.” With him are several gulmorvrin
he has recently “converted.”
He intends, as vengeance for Maranoth’s
acts of desecration, to “convert” all of Maran-
oth’s hamlet, family, and, lastly, Maranoth
himself. This would be great as a stand-alone
adventure, and a positive resolution could
endear the characters to the locals, the Kelis
clan, and the nearby Laranians. If the GM

wanted to make this a longer-running mini-
campaign, elements from the Abriel and
Bifyrd-Feron fanon articles could be included.
The Dalkeshi Gulmorvrus could be the master-
mind behind all the Morgathian activities in
the region, or he could just be a stepping stone
to a greater Morgathian threat.
Alternatively, a Khala of Morgath arrives
to seek vengeance on behalf of the Morgathian
church against the Kelis clan. The Gurim has
decided that this particular Khala has to go
(rivalry, spilled the Gurim’s morning juice on
him, seduced the Gurim’s favorite morvrus,
etc.). Telling the Khala that he has decided that
“Sergeant Maranoth” must be made into an
example, the Gurim has effectively sent this
particular Khala on a suicide mission. Similar
to above, the Khala would arrive with a sizable
force of gulmorvrin and begin destroying
Maranoth’s life, acquaintance by acquaintance.
Similar to the Dalkeshi Gulmorvrus’s arrival
above, this could be the start of a short to long
campaign depending on what you and your
players want to do.
Another option would be that Maranoth
unwittingly saw a map of Kaldor in the temple
of Morgath he and his fellows desecrated. The
map indicated where all known temples of
Morgath were, along with all repositories of
gulmorvrin. Both the Laranians and the
Morgathians would be interested in plucking
this knowledge from his head. In this, you
would have to answer the fundamental
question, “why now, seven years after the
event?”
It could have taken the Laranians seven
years to translate everything they found. After
all, what self-respecting Laranian is going to
admit to his/her superiors that s/he is an
expert in Nuvesarl and Morgathian rites? On
the flip side, the Gurim could have lost his
map of all the repositories (how embarrass-
ing!). Alternatively, the Gurim has systemati-
cally converted all the survivors of the battle.

Maranoth, deemed to be the most fanatically
loyal to Larani and her mortal church, was
scheduled for the last conversion.
