Basketball
Part 3
Questions 1-5

A new hobby
Jacob had always been crazy about sports as a kid -
he played football, tennis, handball, hockey and even
ping pong! But one sport he had never tried before was
basketball. He tried it for the first time during a P.E. class at school when he was twelve
and he loved it. He was so excited for the next class to be able to play the sport again.

Jacob told his mum how much he loved the sport, so she paid for him to go to
basketball classes at the local sports centre with his younger brother, Joe. The two
brothers played two days a week with the team and their coach, before Jacob decided
he wanted to take the sport more seriously.

Joe, however, stayed with the local team while Jacob started to play for a bigger team
with better players. They even played against each other during matches! “It was quite
funny to see my brother as my rival and weird at the same time,” says Jacob, “but my
new team always won the games”. When Jacob turned 15, his parents finally installed
a basketball ring in the back garden so he could practise whenever he wanted, which
made him very happy.

Now Jacob is 16 and basketball is still a huge part of his life, and he hopes to be able to
continue practising his hobby for as long as he can. “Maybe I’ll become a professional
player one day!” he says. Joe agrees with his brother - “he’s a much better player than I
am and he’s a great role model!” he says.

This resource has been made for the purpose of teaching English language learners. We know that students can be learning English in many different places, in many different ways and at age, so we try to
keep these resources as general as possible. There are many acronyms associated with English language teaching. These include (but are not limited to) ELT, TEFL, EFL, ELL, EAL and ESOL. While the term ESL
may not fully represent the linguistic backgrounds of all students, it is the most widely recognised term for English language teaching globally. Therefore, we use the term ‘ESL’ in the names of our resources
to make them easy to find but they are suitable for any student learning to speak English.
