INTIMATIONS OF IMMORTALITY FROM RECOLLECTIONS
OF EARLY CHILDHOOD.
‘¢ The Child is father of the Man;
And I could wish my days to be
Bound each to each by natural piety.”

1k, IV.
Sono. Soxo.
Ye blessed Creatures, I have heard the call
There was a time when meadow, grove, and Ye to each other make; I see
stream, The heavens laugh with you in your jubilee ;
The earth, and every common sight, My heart is at your festival,
To me did seem My head hath its coronal.
Apparelled in celestial light, The fulness of your bliss I feel—I feel it all.
The glory and the freshness of a dream. Oh evil day! if I were sullen
It is not now as it hath been of yore ; While Earth herself is adorning,
Turn wheresoe’er I may, This sweet May morning,
By night or day, And the Children are culling
The things which I have seen I now can see no On every side,
more. In a thousand valleys far and wide,
Il. Fresh flowers ; while the sun shines warm,
And the Babe leaps up on his Mother’s arm—
The Rainbow comes and goes, I hear, I hear, with joy I hear !
And lovely is the Rose, —But there ’s a Tree, of many, one,
The Moon doth with delight A single Field which I have looked upon,
Look round her when the heavens are bare, Both of them speak of something that is gone:
Waters on a starry night The Pansy at my feet
Are beautiful and fair; Doth the same tale repeat :
The sunshine is a glorious birth ; Whither is fled the visionary gleam ?
But yet I know, where’er I go, Where is it now, the glory and the dream ?
That there hath past away a glory from the earth.
V.
I. CHORUS.
CHoRUs. Our birth is but a sleep and a forgetting:
The Soul that rises with us, our life’s Star,
Now, while the birds thus sing a joyous song, Hath had elsewhere its setting,
And while the young lambs bound And cometh from afar :
As to the tabor’s sound, Not in entire forgetfulness, -
To me alone there came a thought of grief; And not in utter nakedness,
A timely utterance gave that thought relief, But trailing clouds of glory do we come
And I again am strong: From God, who is our home:
The cataracts blow their trumpets from the steep; Heaven lies about us in our infancy|
No more shall grief of mine the season wrong ; Shades of the prison-house begin to close
I hear the Echoes through the mountains throng, Upon the growing Boy,
The Winds come to me from the fields of sleep, But he beholds the light, and whence it flows
And all the earth is gay; He sees it in his joy:
Land and sea The Youth, who daily farther from the east
Give themselves up to jollity, Must travel, still is Nature’s Priest,
And with the heart of May And by the vision splendid
Doth every Beast keep holiday ; Is on his way attended;
Thou Child of Joy, At length the Man perceives itdie away,
Shout round me, let me hear thy shouts, thou |And fade into the peavo of common coy
happy Shepherd-boy!
ODE.

ID X.
Corus.
CHoRUvs.
Then sing, ye Birds, sing, sing a joyous song!
O joy! that in our embers And let the young Lambs bound
Is something that doth live. As to the tabor’s sound !
That nature yet remembers We in thought will join your throng,
What was so fugitive ! Ye that pipe and ye that play,
Ye that through your hearts to-day
Soto.
Feel the gladness of the May !

The thought of our past years in me doth breed Sono.

Perpetual benediction: not indeed What though the radiance which was once so
For that which is most worthy to be blest ; bright
Delight and liberty, the simple creed Be now for ever taken from my sight,
Of Childhood, whether busy or at rest, Though nothing can bring back the hour
With new-fledged hope still fluttering in his breast: Of splendour in the grass, of glory in the flower;
Not for these I raise
The song of thanks and praise; CHorus.
But for those obstinate questionings We will grieve not, rather find
Of sense and outward things, Strength in what remains behind ;
Falling from us, vanishings ; In the primal sympathy
Blank misgivings of a Creature Which having been must ever be ;
Moving about in worlds not realised, In the soothing thoughts that spring
High instincts before which our mortal Nature Out of human suffering;
Did tremble like a guilty thing surprised: In the faith that looks through death,
But for those first affections, In years that bring the philosophic mind.
Those Shadowy recollections,
Which, be they what they may, Xele
Are yet the fountain light of all our day,
Are yet a master light of all our seeing; Soo.
Uphold us, cherish, and have power to make And O, ye Fountains, Meadows, Hills, and Groves,
Our noisy years seem moments in the being Forbode not any severing of our loves !
Of the eternal Silence : Yet in my heart of hearts I feel your might ;
I only have relinquished one delight
To live beneath your more habitual sway.
CxHoRUvs. I love the Brooks which down their channels fret,
Truths that wake, Even more than when I tripped lightly as they :
To perish never ; The innocent brightness of a new-born Day
Which neither listlessness, nor mad endeayour, Is lovely yet;
Nor Man nor Boy,
Nor all that is at enmity with joy, CHORUS.
Can utterly abolish or destroy! The Clouds that gather round the setting sun
Hence in a season of calm weather, Do take a sober colouring from an eye
Though inland far we be, That hath kept watch o’er man’s mortality ;
Our Souls have sight of that immortal sea Another race hath been, and other palms are won.
Which brought us hither, Thanks to the human heart by which we live,
Can in a moment trayel thither, Thanks to its tenderness, its joys, and fears,
And see the Children sport upon the shore, To me the meanest flower that blows can give
And hear the mighty waters rolling evermore. Thoughts that do often lie too deep for tears.
