EC.

From the start of September, we have been focusing on 5 jobs per day for EC to complete. These are:

 Writing
 Reading
 Maths
 Topic
 Speech & Language

We have been working on a system where for each of these task’s EC gets a star which he can then stick
to his display.
This has worked well, and EC loves getting his stars and sticking the stars onto his chart. He has
responded well to this change to his routine and now every morning when he comes in, he knows what is
expected of him.

EC is spending a lot more time within the classroom with his peers, he completes all the morning jobs sat on
the orange group table.

For other tasks such as Writing and Maths jobs these often must be adapted so EC can complete them,
but these are still done within the classroom at his table.

EC can sit for 10 minutes on the carpet at learning time if supported by his 121. He often if encouraged
puts his hand up to answer a question and likes to take part in the class learning.

Phonics

We are doing some more targeted activities to help EC with his learning such as moving away from phonics
to concentrate on words rather than sounds. We have made this decision as we feel that this will benefit
EC more as he grows. EC is able to recognise a number of the year two common exception words and then
ones we are struggling with we do daily PTP to help him to remember then which is working really well and
EC score is improving daily.

Writing

We have really been focusing on pencil grip and letter formation. We do quick little extra jobs to support
EC with his writing. This has massively improved since the start of the year and most of EC’s writing is
legible. EC is able to sit and focus on the task that has been set for him and he knows that he shouldn’t
rush and he needs to take his time.

Maths

Most of the Maths activities that EC does are adapted to meet his needs. His Maths level does not meet
the year 2 expectation. EC’s memory for numbers is great, but he struggles to example then. E.g can have
two tens and three ones and can tell you he has 2 10’s and 3 ones but does not understand that together
that is 23. We continue to work on this to help him improve.

Topic

EC. Really enjoyed learning about Australia in our class topic, he did an absolutely fantastic drawing of a
crocodile! EC loved telling us all about the Great Barrier Reef. He sits well at carpet time, with support
from 121 and has enjoyed the cutting and sticking activities that we have done in the class.
Speech and Language

To help with EC language we have been using colourful semantics and then moving onto sequences. This is a
series of four cards and EC must put them in order – for example how to make a cheese sandwich. EC is
really good at this, and it is a great conversation starter with him and he now uses the pictures to explain
what he needs to do to get the sequence cards in the right order.

Friendships

EC has some good friendships and loves playtime and lunch time. He loves playing games with his friends. EC
sometimes has to be reminded to share and be kind with his hands, but this has vastly improved since last
year.

EC has made a super start to year 2, and has embraced the changes so well. We are really proud of him!
