Language Development-The child’s language ability

Ruby
Listening & Speaking
Ruby pretty much understands the basic English conversations in the classroom.
She can follow instructions and pick up words/sentences taught to her easily.
However, she still doesn’t make the effort to speak on her own unless she is
compelled to speak.
Reading
She is familiar with all the sounds of the letters at this stage and can read the print
letters well too. She is also capable to read three letter words.
Writing
Her writing skills are getting better. But, more work needs to be done as it is not
legible.
Nino
He can follow some basic conversations in the classroom; other than that he
doesn’t make much effort to pick up the daily conversations taught. His interest
towards the language has been erratic. He needs some more time I reckon as I have
had experience with children of his age who develop interest towards the language
at a much later age.

Kelvin
Listening & Speaking
Kelvin’s vocabulary is pretty strong at this stage. He can understand me for the
most part and follows whatever I tell him to do. But, there are times when he
doesn’t participate in the group activities and doesn’t speak a word or repeat the
words/conversations taught. Other than that, his diction and articulation is very
good.
Reading
He can read a lot of sound letters at this stage and shall start to work on the
diphthongs and phonics combinations. He can also read three letter words with
some supervision.
Writing
His writing is not that well coordinated as he doesn’t like to write. But, with more
practice and time he will get it right, I’m sure.
Alan
Listening & Speaking
There has been a significant improvement in his usage of the language. He can
understand simple stories well and can answer the questions based on the stories.
That being said, his articulation of the sounds and words needs more work and I
have to make a lot of effort to make him speak. He would speak or sing just for the
sake of speaking and singing. He still doesn’t show a lot of eagerness.
Reading
He can read a bunch of sound letters and is making a great progress. He just needs
to continue working on them as there’s a lot more materials to be covered next
semester.
Writing
He can reproduce the letters but his handwriting isn’t legible enough. He needs to
do more work to get it better.
Elaine
Listening & Speaking
Elaine speaks simple sentences occasionally. But, for the most part she doesn’t
have the willingness to speak. She does understand the basic conversations that I
make with her and can follow the classroom instructions; however I have to try
really hard to make her give responses in English.
Reading
She can read and trace a bunch of sound letters but she keeps forgetting their
sounds frequently. She needs to work on them regularly.
Writing
I have no quibbles to make regarding her writing. She can write legibly and has
recently started to write on the notebook.
Wincy
Listening & Speaking
Her understanding level has got a lot better as compared to last semester as she can
answer to simple questions but there are times when she relies on her friends to
help her translate when I speak something and doesn’t make the effort to speak on
her own unless she is compelled to speak. So, she has the potential to improve her
speaking.
Reading
She can read most of the sound letters but she forgets them very easily at times and
gets confused between the capital and lowercase letters. A lot more work needs to
be done in this area.
Writing
She can write the letters pretty well on the blackboard and her hand coordination
has got a lot better this semester.
Sally
Listening & Speaking
Sally was very active this semester. For the most part, she would come up to me
and would want to work with me. She can understand the simple classroom
conversations and can respond to them as well. She knows the poems and songs
pretty well. She would recite and sing them whole heartedly.
Reading
She can read and trace the letters pretty well at this stage and is making a great
progress in remembering them. During English lessons, when we work on the
sound analysis she is very prompt in her responses.
Writing
She can write on the blackboard at this stage but her hand coordination isn’t right
yet. More work needs to be done in this regard.
Neil
Listening & Speaking
The picture cards that we use in the classroom are of great interest to him as he
always shows interest in learning them and can remember them very well. He still
hesitates to speak but his understanding capability is very good. He can follow all
the instructions and can respond to simple questions.

Reading:

He has started to read and trace the sound letters and can reproduce the letters and
sounds very well.

Peng

Listening & Speaking

Peng hasn’t made the kind of progress in Speaking that he should have made this
semester. His vocabulary is limited and so is his level of understanding. However,
he likes to listen to the English stories and always would want me to read a book to
him. He shows interest to the language very rarely, but the times when he shows
interest he would learn things really fast.
Reading
He can read and trace a bunch of sound letters but he keeps forgetting their sounds
frequently.
Writing
He can reproduce the words on the blackboard pretty well. He is about to start
writing on the notebook next semester.
Sean
Listening & Speaking
He is very hesitant to speak, even though he can understand simple sentences very
well as he would respond to them through gestures, actions but not words. So, we
have to work more on his speaking. When he works with the picture words, his
diction is right and can enunciate the words quite well.
Reading
He knows a handful of the sound letters and can read them. But, there’s still a long
way to go for him. He forgets the sounds of the letters pretty quick.
Writing
He can write the letters but more he needs to practice more to get his hand
coordination right and the writing legible.
Leo:
Listening & Speaking
His speaking ability has got a lot better and more fluent. He constructs his
sentences very well and when he speaks, he does it with confidence. He has spent a
lot of time with me this semester and we have done a lot of work ranging from
reading and telling stories, picture cards, songs, rhymes and poems. His listening
skills are very sharp as he picks up new things taught to him very easily and
applies them at the right situation. He has been active all throughout this semester.
Reading
He is familiar with all the sounds of the letters; though he needs to review them
once in a while. He can analyze the beginning sounds of the words as well.
Writing
She can write the letters on the blackboard and his hand coordination is
satisfactory. But, he would need more practice as there’s still a lot of room for
improvement.
Teddy
Listening & Speaking

He has a good ability to memorize words which has helped him to enlarge his
mental dictionary. There is an evident progress in his understanding of the
language too. But, I would not say the same about his usage of English. Even
though the daily phrases are not a problem to him as he can pretty much
understand them, there is still some hesitation or some lack of desire in speaking.
He will need some more time to get used to the language.
Reading
He can read and trace most of the sound letters. However, he easily forgets them;
so he needs to review them on a regular basis.
Writing
He has made a few attempts on the blackboard and did a pretty good job.

Taylor
Taylor was initially very hesitant to work in English during the beginning of the
semester. We have recently started to work on a regular basis. The times that I
have worked with her we spent mostly on learning new words and numbers. The
picture cards that we use in the classroom are of great interest to her as she always
shows interest in learning them and can reproduce most of the words very well.
Besides, she has recently started to make an effort to understand the simple
commands that we use in the classroom.

Ashley

Listening & Speaking

Ashley has made a massive progress overall in English. I am very satisfied with
her progress. Her understanding of the language has got a lot better and her mental
dictionary is expanding day by day. As mentioned in her last semester report, her
strongest point is her attentiveness on the new words and expressions we use in our
class. She was a bit hesitant to speak during last semester, but this semester she has
been able to overcome that.
Reading
She can read most of the sound and print letters. She loves it when I read books to
her and would pick up new words/phrases from the stories and would apply them
in her daily conversations.
Writing
She can reproduce the letters on the blackboard, but her hand coordination is still
not right. With more practice, I am sure she will get it right.
Shawn
Listening & Speaking
He is very hesitant to speak, even though he can understand simple sentences very
well as he would respond to them through gestures, actions but not words. So, we
have to work more on his speaking. He needs to do more work with his diction and
articulation of the letters and words.
Reading
He has spent time in tracing and reading the sandpaper letters. But, there’s still a
long way to go for him to remember them.
Arthur

Listening & Speaking

Arthur hasn’t made the kind of progress in Speaking that he should have made this
semester. His vocabulary is very limited. He can follow basic conversations and
instructions well but more work needs to be done especially when I have been told
that he is going to apply for an International School in a few months. However, he
has recently joined the English lessons during the afternoon and is showing a little
bit of interest towards the language. So, here’s hoping he improves himself as he
definitely has the potential.
Reading
He can read and trace a bunch of sound letters but he keeps forgetting their sounds
frequently.
May
Listening & Speaking
May showed a lot of progress towards the end of the semester especially after she
joined the English lessons. Her listening skills have got a lot better and she is
showing a lot of keenness in the speaking lesson in the afternoon. She makes a lot
of effort to speak. She is showing a lot of dedication and it makes me really happy.
Reading
She can read a bunch of letters but she needs to work more to get used to all the
sounds.
Writing
She can reproduce the letters on the blackboard but her hand coordination isn’t that
good. She needs to spend more time in tracing and writing them next semester.
But, it’s a good start.
Coco

Listening & Speaking

Coco pretty much understands the basic English conversations in the classroom.
She can follow instructions and pick up words/sentences taught to her easily.
However, she still doesn’t make the effort to speak on her own unless she is
compelled to speak.
Reading
She can read most of the sound letters but there are times when she gets confused
between the sounds. She can also match the cursive letters with the print letters and
is gradually trying to read the three letter words.
Writing
I have no quibbles to make regarding her writing. She can write legibly and has
recently started to write on the notebook.

George
Listening & Speaking
He has started using small sentences such as “Wash my hands,” “Drink water,”
“What’s this?” “Whose circle?” etc. But, there’s still a long way to go for him. He
knows a few words now from the picture cards that he has worked on so far and
can identify them when he looks at those pictures. He likes to listen to the English
stories and repeat the sentences with me.
Reading
He works on the sound letters occasionally and does a good job in tracing and
reading the letters.
Writing
He makes a great effort to reproduce the letters on the board. It isn’t legible yet as
he needs to practice more, but it’s a good start.
Jerry
Listening & Speaking
Jerry showed a lot of progress towards the end of the semester especially after he
joined the English lessons. His listening skills have got a lot better and he is
showing a lot of keenness in the speaking lesson in the afternoon. He makes a lot
of effort to speak. He is showing a lot of dedication and it makes me really happy.

he likes to listen to the English stories and always would want me to read a book to
him. He shows interest to the language very rarely, but the times when he shows
interest he would learn things really fast.
Reading
He can read and trace a bunch of sound letters but he keeps forgetting their sounds
frequently. His recurrent nonattendance in the class is one of the reasons why he
hasn’t shown much progress.
Andy
Listening & Speaking
