Learning Objectives Students will be able to demonstrate their understanding of three new literary terms, Simile,
Metaphor and Hyperbole. They will have learnt how to notice all three, as well as use them
within their writing.

Lesson Introduction (hook): Student will know:

We will then take a 5-minute break. I will put on a timer and
make a list of any students who need to step out during our
break. After 5 minutes, I will call them back, telling them that
we are going to play a kahoot for the remainder of class.
They are expected to sign on quickly.
When we come back from our break, I will provide students

 with a worksheet where they will demonstrate their
understanding of all three literary terms, I have just taught. I
will give the students 10 minutes to complete their
worksheets, collecting them at the end.
Lastly, students will play the kahoot game I have prepared,
that will review the literary terms we learnt in class today and
test their understanding of them in depth! This will take the
remaining time of class.

Students will do:
Students will write their paragraph in the
first 15 minutes using commas
appropriately. They will then listen to the
description of each literary term (Simile,
Metaphor and hyperbole), filling in
appropriate details in their Owl Booklet.
They will listen to the video with examples
of similes and metaphors in song lyrics, and
finally play a kahoot reviewing the terms!

methods. (Students will be instructed on
how the lesson will develop and they will be
responsible for adopting work methods best
suited for the classroom).

communications technologies: (Students
will use their cellphones to sign in and play
the Kahoot I have created for them. They
will answer the questions and one student
will be rewarded).

Students will use the information taught to
them in the writer’s workshop to complete
their paragraph. They will then use the
information taught to them through
slideshows, the Owl Booklet and a video to
answer the question on the Kahoot!

Students will gain a broad understanding of
the ways they can use grammar and literary
techniques to help them in their reading and
writing methods throughout their academic
career.
Universal Design for Learning/
Differentiation:
By using different materials such as the Owl
Booklet, slideshows, the Writer’s Workshop
booklet and a Kahoot, every individual
student will be able to participate throughout
the lesson. Ipads can be provided for any
student without access to a cellphone. All
students have access to the booklets.
 Closure (transition):
Students will end the period with the kahoot I have made on
the three literary terms. The winning student will win a prize
for having answered the most correct answers. Remaining
time.
Students will be reminded of the importance of these
techniques and that they have a quiz coming up November
21st on all the terms we have seen so far!
FORMATIVE - Assessment FOR learning:
Students will be assessed on their journal
writing in the First-15 journal, as well as
their iterary term quiz on November 21st.
FORMATIVE - Assessment AS learning:
Students will be assessed on their ability to
write their paragraphs in the correct format,
as well as using the traits of writing and
writing tool (commas) they have been
taught. They are all expected to participate
in the Kahoot as practice for their quiz and
general knowledge.
SUMMATIVE - Assessment OF learning:
Students will be evaluated on their
participation in class, one of their writer’s
workshop submissions (picked-up next
week), their participation on the Kahoot and
finally the quiz on the literary terms
November 21st.
