Notes: Characteristics of Quadratic Functions (Parabolas)
1. Vertex The maximum or minimum point on the graph
Write as an ordered pair (x, y) To find in the table of values—look in the y column for repeating values
2. Axis of symmetry The line that splits the parabola in half
It is written as an equation—x = # Use the x value of the vertex in the equation
3. Max or Min? If the graph opens up it has a minimum
If the graph opens down it has a maximum The max or min is the vertex
4. Zeros/Roots The solutions to the quadratic equation
They are the x-intercepts—where the graph crosses the x-axis *If it doesn’t cross the x-axis then there are no zeros
5. Y-intercept Where the graph crosses the y-axis
*If you cannot see it on the graph use the table of values on the calculator—the y-intercept will be where the x value in the table is 0
6. Domain The x values for the graph
The domain will always be (- , ) 7. Range The y values of the graph. If the graph has a max the range is (- , highest y value) If the graph has a min the range is (lowest y value, )
