● Discuss about the advantages and disadvantages of a specific topic

G. Procedure

Stages Time Teacher and students’ activities

Warm-up 5 mins - Students will play a game on the website called “Wordwall” to
review the previous lesson’s vocabulary.

+ Words list: airplane. bus, car, motorbike, train, bicycle

- The teacher will ask several constructive questions to assist students


in conceptualizing the content of today’s lesson.

Pre-Writing 18 mins - Task 1: Let’s talk!

+ Students will have some QA periods with the teacher.

+ The teacher should engage every student to actively participate in the


conversation.

“Do you sometimes travel by train?”

“On which occasion?”

- Task 2: Let’s think!

+ Students are required to work in pairs.

+ In each pair, a student takes turns discussing with his/her partner.

“What can you do while traveling by train?”


- Task 3: Let’s discuss!

+ Students are required to work in a small group (3 members).

+ Students will construct a list of which features they LIKE and DON’T
LIKE about traveling by train.

+ The teacher may invite some volunteers to come to the board and write
down their group’s notes. (this can be used as an example for the
comparison in the next task)

- Task 4: Let’s compare!

+ The teacher will provide a model of the note for the advantages and
disadvantages of train travel.

+ Students will look at their notes and compare them with the model
from the teacher to identify if there are similarities.

+ The teacher may take this opportunity to give comments to enhance


the ideas for the upcoming writing task in the while-writing stage.

- Task 5: Reading time

+ Students use several reading skills (skim and scan) for the reading text.

(Reading for gist and reading for detail)

+ Students re-read the text carefully in order to identify the places that
are suitable for putting in discourse markers.

+ The teacher will briefly explain the function of these discourse


markers (linking words)

+ The teacher lets students grade their peers, and the teacher will correct
all the answers again.

While-Writing 15 mins Students are required to work individually.

- Task 1: Create a new note about the advantages and disadvantages of


traveling by train.
- Task 2: Write a short passage around 150 words discussing the
advantages and disadvantages of traveling by train.

Post-Writing 7 mins Students will have a chance to present their short passage to the whole
class. The teacher also gives compliments and positive feedback to motivate
students to be confident in public speaking.

Homework Students can use their spare time at home to ask their parents about their
preferred modes of transportation and the reason for that. Students can also
ask if there are any drawbacks to that mode of transportation. Then make a
list discussing the pros and cons.
