Activity 2.1: Zero articles

Aim - To introduce students to the grammar “Zero article”

- To help students recall the knowledge about the article


“A, an, the”

- To help students recall the knowledge about uncountable


nouns and abstract nouns

Outcomes - Students can use the zero article correctly

- Students can distinguish the different uses of article “A,


an, the” and the “Zero article”

The procedures of the


activity

Step 1 Teacher helps students to recall the knowledge about the


article “A, an, the”, uncountable nouns, and abstract
nouns

Step 2 Teacher provides students with knowledge about “Zero


article”

Step 3 The usages of Zero article

- With uncountable or abstract nouns


- When describing general forms of transport

- With words indicating time: month, year

- Before the names of meals in a day

- Before the names of cities or countries or nationalities

Step 4 Give students examples:

- Sugar is not good for your health

- We went there by bus

- I was born in 2004

- We often have breakfast at 7am

- I visited New York last year.

Step 5 Ask students to give some other examples

Step 6 Check students whether they understand or not by asking


some questions like:

“ Can we use zero article with countable nouns”

“ Can we say: I go to school by the car?”

Aim To have further practice with articles in situational


sentences

Outcomes Students can recognize and use correctly the article (a, an,
the) in each context.

The procedure of the activity

Step 1 Give instructions

- Teacher asks Ss to work in groups of four or five.

- Teacher gives each group a list of five sentences. T tells


them that there is one mistake in each sentence, and they
have to find and correct it.

- Teacher has Ss work in their groups, find and correct the


mistakes. They say “Bingo!” as soon as their group
finishes.

- Teacher confirms the correct answers. The first group to


come up with all the correct answers wins.

Step 2 Check the correct answer together

List of sentences & answer key:

2. My uncle moved to United States three years ago.

3. Our teachers assigned us a homework for our history
