Introduction / Warmer:
-Show students one shoe
-Ask them what it is
-Write “shoe” on the board
-Now show students two shoes
-Ask them what they are.
-Write “shoes” on the board
-Ask students if the two words are the same or different, and in which way
-Point out that one has an “s” and the other
doesn’t.
-The “s” tells that there is more than one pencil.

This introduction/warmer is intended to introduce students to the concept of adding

“s” to singular nouns to create plural nouns. Though this is not the rule for every
singular noun, this is a rule that can be applied to create regular plural nouns.
For now, we will be trying to avoid irregular plural forms.

Detail:

Activity 1: This Activity will primarily be done by using prepared index cards with
simple singular form vocabulary. There will be a picture and the vocabulary on the
back. Students will be shown the picture first to make sure they know the
vocabulary, and if the students can guess the word, you can flip the card to show
the correct spelling and vocabulary for the plural form.

Activity 2: Students will be put into pairs and each pair will be given a small bag
with a few items. All of these items in the bag will have already been presented
on the index cards in Activity 1. In pairs, students must pull out an item at
random and say the plural form of the word. These items will all be simple items
with regular plural nouns as their plural form.

Activity 3: Students will walk around the classroom with their partners and
identify objects in the classroom in regular plural form. Teacher will spend
approximately 30 seconds to 1 minute with each pair listening to how the students
are forming plural nouns and how they are speaking to their partners.

Activity 4: Students will be given a worksheet with pictures of items they have
seen in the classroom and flash cards. Next to these pictures will be the singular
form of the picture shown. The objective for the student is to fill in the plural
form of each word/picture on the worksheet. Flash cards shown at the beginning of
class will be taped around the classroom for students to roam around with their
partner to fill in the worksheet.
8
Reflect and cooler: For the cooler, students will be put into 8 groups of 5. All
students will be seated at their desks and one group will be asked to come up to
the front of the class. Teacher will say a singular form word and the 5 students
must run to the corresponding plural form flash card stuck on the walls. First one
to touch the correct word will receive a small prize or star. Repeat for all 8
groups.
9
Extension strategies: Students can practice their regular plural nouns with simple
worksheet assignment. A list of singular form words that students need to make
plural by simply adding “s”.
