COMNAP - The Council of Managers of National Antarctic Programs

PROJECT PROPOSAL

PROJECT DETAILS
Project Title Fire Safety / Fire Suppression Systems Forum
Project Manager Simon Trotter (Lead), Michael Gencarelli (co-lead)
Chair or Vice Chair Sponsor Agnieszka Kruszewska
Start Date 1 October 2019 End Date COMNAP AGM XXXII
3–6 August 2020
Project Objectives

Exchange information on fire safety expertise and fire suppression systems perhaps by way of a forum.
Share that information in the form of best practice advice with all COMNAP Members.

Strategic Fit
Safety of human life in the Antarctic is a key consideration for COMNAP and COMNAP Member national Antarctic
programs. Aging infrastructure, modernization projects and a changing regulatory framework related to fire
suppression suggest it is timely to consider the topic and share best practice as per COMNAP’s purpose and objectives.

Project Outputs and Outcomes

Information exchange forum; Sharing of best practice at COMNAP AGM XXXII (2020). Continuation of the forum if
needed and further project if required.

The list of topics includes:

‐History of fire in Antarctica and fire systems and response
‐What building codes or standards are being applied at different stations; include review of life safety, passive and
active fire suppression, and fire alarm system types.
‐What extra fire safety systems are used and why. And how is that decision made.
‐How can first‐responder safety be improved
‐Programs for training in firefighting for personnel
‐Lessons learned
