Literary Texts and Authors from Different Regions

What is Literary Texts and Authors from Different Regions? - It tackles or talks about the Literary Works from Regions
1-15; It is about the history that is embedded in literature. These Literary Works were made by National Artists and
Writers.

Region I - Ilocos Region

 Pedro Bucaneg (1592-1630) - is a Filipino Poet and is considered as the "Father of the Ilocano Literature". And
he authored the Ilocano Epic "Biag ni Lam-ang.

 Biag ni Lam-ang - means "The Life of Lam-ang". It is an epic story of the Ilocano people. It is notable for being
the first Philippine folk epic to be recorded in written form and was one of only two folk epics documented
during the Philippines' Spanish Colonial period.

Region II - Cagayan Valley

 Ariel S. Tabag (August 16, 1978) - is a bilingual Ilocano fiction author, poet, editor, translator, and musician. He
has received the Palanca Awards for his Ilokano short stories.

Examples of his works = Dung-aw, Sudario, Eman, Dagiti Samiweng ti Angin, Maris ti Birhen

1. Voice Tape - The short story of Ariel S. Tabag entitled Voice Tape, tells a story that many Filipinos can relate to,
especially to those who are in the same state or situation as the characters in the story. Everything that
happened in the story can happen to anyone.

Region III - Central Luzon

 Francisco Balagtas Baltazar - was a prominent Filipino poet, and is widely considered as one of the greatest
Filipino literary laureates for his impact on Filipino literature. The famous epic, Florante at Laura, is regarded as
his defining work.

Examples of his works = Florante at Laura, La India elegante y el negrito amante, Orosman at Zafira

 Florante at Laura (full title: The History of Florante and Laura in the Kingdom of Albania) - an 1838 awit written
by Tagalog poet Francisco Balagtas. It is considered one of the masterpieces of Philippine literature. Balagtas
wrote the epic during his imprisonment. He dedicated it to his former sweetheart María Asuncion Rivera, whom
he nicknamed "M.A.R." and is referenced to as "Selya" in the dedication "Kay Selya" ("For Celia"). The story is
loosely based on his own biography.

Region IV-A - CALABARZON (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon)

 Paz Márquez-Benítez - was a Filipina short-story writer, educator, and editor. Her career as a woman educator
as well as her contributions as a writer is seen as an important step within the advancement of women in
professional careers as well as in the development of Philippine literature.

Examples of her works = Dead Stars (1925), A Night in the Hills (1925)

 Dead Stars - a short story of an over thirty years old bachelor, Alfredo Salazar who was about to get married to
his fiancée, Esperanza. His love and passion for his fiancé started getting fade as he was attracted to another
woman named Julia Salas.

Region IV-B - MIMAROPA (Mindoro Occidental, Mindoro Oriental, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan)

 Ambahan - a traditional form of poetry by the Hanunó'o Mangyan people of Mindoro, Philippines. It has no
known author and it is a rhythmic poetic expression with a meter of seven-syllable lines and rhythmic end-
syllables. It is also most often presented as a chant without a determined musical pitch.

Region V - Bicol Region

 Merlinda Bobis - a Filipina writer who now resides in Australia. Born in Legazpi City, in the Philippines province
of Albay, Merlinda Bobis attended Bicol University High School then completed her B.A. at Aquinas University in
Legazpi City. She holds post-graduate degrees from the University of Santo Tomas and University of Wollongong,
and now lives in Australia. Written in various genres in both Filipino and English, her work integrates elements of
the traditional culture of the Philippines with modern immigrant experience.

 An Earnest Parable - a short story that will tackle this kind of multiculturalism trope. It is a short story that is a
part of her novel, White Turtle, which is a compilation of meaningful twenty-three short stories that are set in
the Philippines and Australia.

Region VI - Western Visayas

 Winton Lou G. Ynion - is a young poet, fictionist, critic, and a teacher from Iloilo. He is known for his intelligence
discourses on the Filipino novel and its relation to nationalism. He was the youngest doctor of Philosophy in UP
Diliman.

 The Love of Magdalena Jalandoni captures the essence of the 'binukot' (isolated) lifestyle of the Reina of
Hiligaynon Literature. He particularly emphasizes her love of writing which led her to sacrifice elements
considered to be essential in society, such as marriage.

Region VII - Central Visayas

 Adonis Durado - a Filipino poet, visual journalist, and graphic designer of Cebuano descent. He was born on
August 25, 1975, in Cebu City, Philippines. He was also the author of the said poem "Dili Tanang Matagak
Mahagbong" or in English "Not All That Drops Falls".

Region VIII - Eastern Visayas

 Merlie Alunan - one of the most influential and respected writer in Visayas region. The Haiyan Dead was written
to share her worst experiences of the said typhoon.

 The Haiyan Dead - refers to the victims of the Yolanda typhoon. This poem also refers to how traumatic the
typhoon is. This poem shows that this typhoon indeed made a huge impact on their lives.

Region IX – Zamboanga Peninsula

 Antonio Reyes Enriquez (1936 – 2014) - born in 1936 and raised in Zamboanga. He has written several books of
short stories and novels--including the short story collection "Dance a White Horse to Sleep and Other Stories,"
and novel "Surveyors of the Liguasan Marsh".

 The story ‘The Green Sanctuary’ - isn’t really the title of the book and it is the ‘The Surveyors of the Linguasan
Marsh’. The story took place in a small town in Pikit, Cotabato. The book talks about the Culture and mainly the
native people in Mindanao, As we all know Mindanao is one of the places here in the Philippines that really does
give importance to ‘tribes’ and its own culture. The native people in the story are called the “Moros”.

 The Moros is unlike us the millennials or the Gen. Z, they follow their culture and it represents how they take
care of their ancestors and how they practice their culture in different ways.

Region X - Northern Mindanao

 Designated as Region X of the Philippines, Northern Mindanao (Filipino: Hilagang Mindanao) is composed of five
provinces and two cities classified as highly urbanized, all occupying the northcentral part of Mindanao island,
and the island province of Camiguin. The regional center is Cagayan De Oro City, where the national
government's regional offices and other big establishments are located.

 This region is mostly known for there Myths and Legends Such as “The legend of Maria Cristina Falls “

 Maria Cristina Falls is a waterfall of the Agus River in the Northern Mindanao region of the Philippines. It is
sometimes called the "twin falls" as the flow is separated by a rock at the brink of the waterfall. Legend has it
that Maria Cristina Falls was actually twin sisters.

Region XI - Davao Region

 Davao region, designated as region XI, is located on the southeastern portion of Mindanao. It consists of four (4)
provinces, namely: Compostela valley, Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental, and Davao del Sur. The region encloses
the Davao Gulf and its regional center is Davao City.
 The author of Indarapatra at Sulayman was Bartolome del Valle Radia. Indarapatra is an ancestor of Bantugan, a
renowned epic hero from the Maranao epic Darangen, based on the Ramayana. This story is of Rajah
Indarapatra, the mythological hero of Maguindanao, and his brother, Sulayman. The Indarapatra and Sulayman
epic story tells about a magical and affectionate family like what we Filipinos have. We, Filipinos, have a value of
helpfulness like what have in the story, helping others with our own initiative and helping those who are in need
even though in a limited amount of help.

Region XII - Caraga Region

The Caraga, formally known as the Caraga Administrative Area or simply Caraga Region and designated as Region XIII, is
a Philippine administrative region that occupies the northeastern part of the island of Mindanao.

 Kevin Pison Piamonte - He is an Ilonggo film and theater director, scriptwriter, fictionist & actor. Born in Iloilo
City on March 2, 1966, his parents are Angel Jover Piamonte and Rosalinda Fuentes Pison. National Artist for
Music Jovita Fuentes is the sister of his maternal grandmother. Kevin Pison Piamonte is currently an Associate
Professor at the Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences at the University of the Philippines Visayas.

REGION XIII - National Capital Region

 The National Capital Region, also referred to as Metro Manila, has a population of more than 11 million people
and occupies an area of only 636 square kilometers. It serves as the country's primary financial, commercial, and
educational hub.

 "Five Brothers, One Mother from Mansions" by Exie Abola - In this story, the writer exhibited the experience of
being an outsider by moving from one culture to another. The story is all about family and home. A mother will
do all these things with absolute love, that she can leave all her personal needs behind so their children can have
entirely they need. She will not sleep, eat and even wait you until you arrived home and know you’re safe and
sound.

 The Old Woman of the Candles - about a man named Burt who agrees to stay with his friend Doray at her
grandmother's home for Holy Week. Doray's grandmother tells Burt the story of Santo Entierro, the dead Christ,
and how her family owns the statue. On Good Friday there is a parade and the take the statue to the church so
everyone may see it. Later that night Burt awakes and takes a walk only to find the statue is missing. It then
reappears on Easter Sunday.

REGION XIV – ARMM (THE AUTONOMOUS REGION OF MUSLIM MINDANAO)

 Folk literature in Mindanao Muslim cultural communities as in other Filipino groups follow the oral tradition in
that folktales, myths, legends, epics, poems, riddles and proverbs are handed down by word of mouth from
generation to generation.

 One of the known literary works in this region is "The Virgin", which is a story written by Kerima Polotan
Tuvera. It won two first prizes in 1952: The Philippines' Free Press Short Story, and the Palanca Awards. It is the
story of a woman and her experience of desire and freedom.

REGION XV - THE CORDILLERA ADMINISTRATIVE REGION

 Cordillera literature is almost all oral and can only be heard chanted or sung in wakes and rituals (Cimatu 2013).
It may be classified into ritualistic and non-ritualistic forms.

 Ritualistic literature consists of songs, chants, and narratives which can only be performed or recited in a
religious context in the observance of certain rituals or ceremonies in divine or supernatural intervention in
human affairs.

 The Hudhud (Ifugao) consists of narrative chants traditionally performed by the Ifugao community, which is well
known for its rice terraces extending over the highlands of the northern island of the Philippine archipelago. It is
practiced during the rice sowing season, at harvest time, and at funeral wakes and rituals. Moreover,

 An Ullalim (Kalinga) epic is a traditional music and poetry form of the Philippines. These are long-chanted stories
passed down for hundreds of years that tell the exploits of heroes. They are classics of the Malayo-Polynesian
language family.
