Observation Notes of ENGL398R (UTA: 7
Paris)

Environmental
- The room has rectangular tables that form a U shape, which faces toward the front of the
classroom.
- The front of the classroom has a projector, screen, and whiteboards.
- 7Lyra brought out a speaker to play music.
- The projector screen and computer were already set up.
- The room overall has a great feel to it due to the layout and the very nice windows and
sets up for an inclusive environment.
- This classroom is one of the nicest rooms I’ve been in at College Park.
- ENGL398R meets Tues/Thurs at 9:30-10:45 am

Before Class
- - Lyra and Paris were both there 10 minutes before class started, and I don’t know who
arrived earlier.
- They both were interacting with each other the entire time. You could tell that they have
a good relationship. They interacted with some of the students as they walked into the
classroom.
- They both were prepared, and 7 Paris pulled up the PowerPoint slides for that day
- The students all entered class prepared to work. The students came in sat down and got
out a writing utensil and paper ready to take notes. All the students seemed like they were
eager and ready to work.

Student Engagement
- Students knew class had begun once 7 Lyra greeted everyone and began to talk about class.
Also, she started promptly at 9:30 am.
- The students knew what was going to happen for the next 75 minutes I Lyra presented a
slide that had an outline laid out by time.
- All the students were engaged during class and surprisingly none of them were asleep for
a 9:30 am class.
- The students are comfortable with each other and conversate with one another in an
engaging conversation.
- All of the students raised their hands to discuss and answer questions with the instructor
(Lyra)
7 and the UTA.

Facilitation
- Objective of the class: Round Table #1 ChatGPT & Professional Writing and Analyze the
expert focusing on scene and information.
- Round Table #1 ChatGPT & Professional Writing, where the students openly discussed
ChatGPT in the professional world. Lyra passed out note cards to each of the students
giving them different jobs. The different jobs gave each student a different perspective
for the discussion.
- Each card has a job: connector, evidential assessor, underscores, speculator, devil’s
advocate, illustrator, connector, appreciator, problem poser, active listener, questioner.
- They were put in partners and were assigned a page from a podcast called “Finding
Emilie”. Each group was tasked to highlight the page and discuss the scene and
information. Then Lyra and Paris asked each group around the room what they found and
highlighted.

UTA
- Paris sat up front next to Lyra at a table next to the computer.
- Throughout class, Paris helped toggle back and forth through the slides.
- Paris engaged with the students by using one of the slides to talk about putting research
into the scene.
- Paris bounced back some questions as to how to put factual information into the scene.
- At the end of class, Paris brought up House Keeping and the upcoming assignment “Puke
Drafts”, in which she stated that she would lead the “Puke Drafts” workshop.
- Paris told the students that she would send an announcement and collect tickets.
- Paris is very nice to her students. She sits up front, up straight. She pays attention to what
the students are saying via head nods and eye contact.
