Time: 10.00am-10.45am

Students Prior Knowledge: Familiar with the term technology and the idea of technological devices Understand concepts of measurement Understand how to measure and the elements in which are involved

creative thinking

Cross-curriculum priorities (may be addressed in the lesson)

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures Proficiencies:(Mathematics only) Asia and Australias engagement with Asia Sustainability

Lesson Objectives (i.e. anticipated outcomes of this lesson, in point form beginning with an action verb) As a result of this lesson, students will be able to: Manage ICT equipment correctly Use mobile technologies to transfer and capture data Demonstrate and experiment with the use of hardware and software components in digital systems Provision for students at educational risk: For the student with Aspergers change the activity slightly so she is able to work by herself-allow her to choose what pleases her but still using the technological devices For the student with behavioural issues, pay attention to him in the sense that you know what he is doing and are able to monitor his actions.

Teachers Prior Preparation/Organisation: Gather ICT materials: Beebots and iPads Move desks to allow for group work (ensure 4-5 people can be at a desk) Ensure all iPads are charged and working Turn all Beebots on and ensure they are also all working

LESSON EVALUATION (to be completed AFTER the lesson) Assessment of Lesson Objective and Suggestions for Improvement :

Teacher self-reflection and self-evaluation:

LESSON DELIVERY (attach worksheets, examples, marking key, etc, as relevant)

Time 10.00am Motivation and Introduction: 1. Ask students to gather on the mat at the front of the class 2. Have the ICT materials (Beebots, iPads and chatter block) hidden under a cloth 10.03am 3. Use the smart board to have the children brainstorm different ideas of technology, e.g. what kinds they are familiar with So what kinds of technology do you guys use at home? 10.07am 4. Then ask the students what kinds of technologies they think may be under the cloth Who wants to have a guess as to what is underneath the cloth 10.10am 5. Reveal the cloth and ask students if they have seen any of these technologies before. So who has seen these types of technology before? *If students are not familiar with the technologies explain the purpose of each So this here (the Beebot) allows you to measure something, you tell it where to go using the arrows and count how many steps it takes to get to somewhere The chatter block here allows you to record your voice and match the recording to a particular picture And iPads have lots of purposes, but today will be focussing on taking pictures and viewing them 10.15am 6. Separate the class into groups of 4, do this using the counting method (give each student a number of 1-4 and ask all the number 1s to go together etc. Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key Questions): 10.18am 1. Once all the students are seated in their groups proceed with the lesson by introducing the iPads. Introduce the importance of being careful and not playing rough with them. Alright everyone, I am going to hand out 2 iPads to each group, you must work in pairs for this activity. I want you to remember that these iPads are very precious and we need to be very careful when we handle them, so we cannot throw them around to our friends-we must pass them carefully. We only touch the iPads with our finger, not with textas, or coloured pens We must not hit the iPads with our hands, but touch them gently- if we hit them they wont do what we want them to do iPads Resources/References Align these with the segment where they will be introduced.

Smart board

10.20am

2. Ask the students (in their pairs) to take a photo of two items (something that is the favourite colour of each group member). Teach them how to open the camera app and how to take a photo. So can everyone please turn on their I-pads by pressing the middle button, slide your finger to unlock the iPad I would like you to open the camera by clicking on the camera icon (walk around the room with your I-pad showing the students what icon you are talking about) Your iPad will now show the camera display-to take a photo press this button on the screen (point to it on your I-pad and move around the classroom) Using your iPads I would like you and your partner to go around the classroom and find 2 things that are yours and your partners favourite colours-you will then take a photo of this item and come back to your desks

10.30am

3. Once all the students have returned to their desks show them how to view their pictures so they can show their other group members. So now we are going to show our other group members (the other pair at your table) the photos we took. To view our pictures we click this button here titled photos (walk around the class to ensure each student is on the same page

10.35am

4. Ask the students to pack away the iPads and pass around a beebot to each pair 5. Introduce the beebot to the students All your Beebots should be switched on, so to make sure press the middle button and they should light up To make your beebot move press the arrows on its back and then the middle button again Like the iPads we need to be careful with these so we cant go around throwing them and hitting them-they are fragile

Beebots

10.37am

10.40am

6. Ask the students to, in their partners, use their Beebots to measure something in the classroom (they must write down how many beebot steps it is) You can choose anything in the classroom to measure, you can even choose your partner if youd like Write down in your notebooks how many beebot steps your particular item is

10.45am

Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students) 1. Conclude the lesson with a discussion of how many beebot steps certain items in the classroom are

10.50am

Who wants to share what they found using their Beebots 2. Reinforce the idea that you must be careful when using technology So everyone, we will be using these types of technology in the future, so it is important to remember that they are quite fragile and

we must be very careful when using it. Who can tell me what we should do when we are using these technologies? 10.55am Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next lesson?) 1. Students will then be asked to put the Beebots away and prepare for recess 2. Teacher will also praise the class on the wonderful work they did throughout the lesson Assessment: (Were the lesson objectives met? How will these be judged?) Manage ICT equipment correctly: This lesson objective will be met by the teacher observing the way in which the students interact with the various technologies. Ensuring they listened and are not roughly playing with the materials. Use mobile technologies to transfer and capture data: Through asking the children to use the iPads to take photos of items within the classroom the students are meeting this particular objective. The teacher will assess this by walking around during the sharing part of this activity. Noting who was able to take a focussed and appropriate photo and who may have struggled with the task. Demonstrate and experiment with the use of hardware and software components in digital systems: The beebot activity will allow for students to achieve this objective. Through allowing them to experiment with the different ways in which you could measure an item using a digital item, students are demonstrating and experimenting with a use of hardware and software components in digital systems. The teacher will assess this through the class discussion as well as observing the students measure their items.
