Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: Understanding Literary Devices

Objectives:
Students will be able to define each literary device.
Students will be able to give an example of each literary device in a reading passage.
State Standards:
9.1 Identify the literary devices of rhythm, repetitive language, and simile and sound
devices of rhyme, onomatopoeia, and alliteration; explain how the author uses each
Context: The goal of this lesson is for the students to learn the vocabulary of each literary device
and identify them in reading/stories. Before this lesson, students will already be prepared to
identify characters, setting, plot, etc. Students will bring this previous knowledge to read and
understand the story completely before searching for the devices within the text. Following this
lesson, the next part of the unit involves students searching for the deeper meaning of the
author’s words, phrases and senses implied. Literary device knowledge will contribute to that
because students will understand the passage better and a larger scale.
Data: Students will be grouped on their level of reading comprehension and speed. This will
benefit the students because they will be able to work at the same pace. The data to determine
this based on past class observations by the teacher. Data will be collected in this lesson by both
worksheets and observations.
Materials:
Part of lesson Materials Used Link
Introduction Smartboard
Teacher directed Ipad/paper for notes
Collaborative Worksheet and Pencil
Independent Digital Ipad and edpuzzle app
Closure Ipad, kahoot app and google
classroom

Procedures:
Introduction (3 minutes): Students will walk into the classroom and sit in their assigned
desks. The teacher will hand out the worksheet and explain what the class will be doing today.
The teacher will explain how she will begin by teaching them about literary devices. Following
this student will work in groups to identify literary devices in a worksheet. Then students will
work alone on and edpuzzle assignment. The last part will be a kahoot game ran by the teacher
and homework will be explained.
Teacher Directed (10 minutes): Students will take out a writing utensil and paper or iPad
and take notes on the lesson. This will be displayed on a smartboard in front of the class with a
google slides presentation. The teacher will introduce the lesson explaining each literary device.
The devices explained will include ones like rhythm, repetitive language, hyperbole, simile
rhyme, onomatopoeia, and alliteration. The teacher will explain different examples of each and
how they make reading a text more detailed and interesting. She will ask students to create their
own examples and raise their hands to share. After this presentation of definitions on the smart
board, students will take their notes and move into their assigned groups for the next section of
the lesson.

Collaborative (20 minutes): Students will be separated into groups of 5 and will take their
worksheets, a pencil and highlighter to stations around the room. They will read the over the
worksheet. After reading it once, they will work together to find an examples, highlight it and
label with which device it represents. They will also include an explanation as to why the word
they chose is an example of each literary device. The teacher will collect the papers at the end of
the 20 minutes.

Independent Digital (10 minutes): Students will return to their assigned seats. Students
will complete this Edpuzzle video on learning about the theme of a story where they will find the
link in google classroom. The definition of theme is the subject of a talk, a piece of writing, a
person's thoughts, or an exhibition; a topic. They will answer each question while watching the
video, and their results will be sent to the teacher. Theme will be beneficial to learn about
because it will prepare the students for the next unit, on a deeper understanding of reading
comprehension and getting the big picture.
Edpuzzle

Closure (20 minutes): Students will take out their iPads and participate in a short Kahoot
game about literary devices. Students will then pack up their things and listen to the teacher’s
instruction. The teacher will ask the class top to explain what they have learned today. The
students will also ask questions that they have about the lesson. Lastly, the teacher will tell the
students they have an assignment on classroom, to make a study set on Quizlet for the test at the
end of the week on Literary Devices. The vocabulary and presentation will also be on classroom
for reference.

Rationale: You must have at least two paragraphs (one for each mandatory piece of
multimedia)
(Edpuzzle): Edpuzzle is an app and website that students can access to complete
assigned work from their teacher. The teacher can create their own video about a certain
lesson or find others already produced on the multimedia. It is very interactive and easy
to use, and students can join a classroom to see video lessons teachers post for them.
This multimedia is so helpful for teachers when they want to assign something quickly
that has already been made or created something completely original. It is used all
around the world and accessible to all different age groups.
Using the LORI criteria this multimedia scores about a 4 because it is very
organized, easy to use, engaging and interactive. I also believe it is very goal oriented
because it almost forces students to pay attention to the video so that they can get the
answer correct and move forward. These video lessons are also very fun and usually
involve a great display of characters and interesting factors that engage the younger
minds to want to pay attention.

(Kahoot) Kahoot is a great website for teachers to use in class. I think this is one of the
best ways to quiz students on information in class and prepare for a test. It is fun and
interactive and students are so engaged because the app keeps a ranking of who is in
first place in the game. Kahoot is available for free and both students and teachers can
make games to test knowledge.
Using the Lori Criteria I think this website would score a 5 because it of how well it was
created. It is engaging in so many ways, and displayed with great colors and music that
make learning fun. It is available all around the world and for all ages. It keeps scores
for the teacher, is easy to navigate and students are excited to use it. Kahoot is also so
simple for younger minds to use because the answer buttons are color coded with shapes.
