What is Multimedia?

• Combination of text, audio, animation and video delivered and digitally manipulated
by using computer or other electronic devices (Vaughan, 1993)

• Integrated structures of text, graphic, video, animation, audio and other medium
where information are digitally stored, represented and processed.

Types of Multimedia Presentation

• Linear (Passive): Content progresses without any control for

the viewers, ex: cinema movie presentation

• Non-linear (Interactive): viewers have control over content

progress, ex: video games

The Use of Multimedia

- Source of interactive
information for
students. - Product presentation
- Make lessons more training - Movies - Stand-alone terminal
interesting using video - Marketing - Games providing public
or animation. - Advertising - Music information
- E-learning - Catalogues - Songs - Interactive kiosk
- Training - Video Conferencing - E-book - Online services

Multimedia Content Forms

• Multimedia uses a combination of different content forms

such as text, audio, images, animations, video and interactive
content.
• Multimedia can be recorded and played, displayed, interacted
with or accessed by information content processing devices,
such as computerized and electronic devices, but can also be
part of a live performance.

10
11

Metadata

• Metadata is "data that provides information about other

data".
• Metadata can be stored and managed in a database, often
called a metadata registry or metadata repository.
• For example, a digital image may include metadata that
describes how large the picture is, the color depth, the image
resolution, when the image was created, the shutter speed,
and other data.

Multimedia System

• A system capable of processing, storage, generating, manipulation

and rendition of multimedia information.

• Combine different types of media such as voice, graphics,

animation, video, etc. into interactive information system

• Example: image and video database, web media search engine,

mobile media navigator

14
15

Why is Multimedia System Important?

• Adoption of digital video

• New content creation tools
• Deployment of high-speed network
• New content and service
• Rapid growth of mobile phone use
• Development of standards ex: coding, delivery and description
